An elegant early-1900s palace built for the Sharif of Mecca, blending Ottoman, Hijazi and Roman-influenced design with carved wooden rawasheen screens and marble halls. Now a regional museum, it displays antique jewellery, weapons, pottery and old photographs. Entry is usually free or a token fee; allow about an hour for the facade and interior woodwork.
A cable car runs down the steep Al Hada escarpment between the mountaintop and Al-Kurr village, with sweeping views over hairpin bends, cliffs and, in season, green terraces. There is a hotel, restaurants and a small amusement park up top. Go on a clear day and expect queues, cooler air and a breeze at altitude.
In spring, working rose farms around Al Hada open for tours where you can walk the damask-rose terraces and watch petals distilled into rose water and precious rose oil. You can sample and buy rose water, jam and attar at the source. The bloom peaks from late March into April; outside that window the farms are much quieter.
A green highland area of orchards, viewpoints and terraced farms on the escarpment south-west of Taif, cooler and often misty. It is a favourite weekend escape for picnics and for honey and fruit stalls, with long views toward the coastal plain. Bring a light jacket, as evenings can be chilly even in summer.

It is Hijazi home cooking at its most beloved and a must-try in Taif.
Order it at a restaurant known for saleeg rather than a generic grill, and eat it hot; a spoon of the accompanying sauce or a dusting of black pepper lifts it.

Visiting a farm at harvest to smell and taste the distillation is a signature Taif experience.
Buy rose water and oil at the source or a reputable shop; pure attar is very costly, so treat cheap 'Taif rose oil' with suspicion.

Buy grapes and figs in season from roadside stalls in the highlands, where they are freshest and cheapest, and wash them before eating.

SAPTCO and similar coaches connect Jeddah, Mecca and Taif over the mountain road in around two to two and a half hours for a low fixed fare. The cheapest and most comfortable option, though departures are limited, so check the schedule ahead.
A booked Uber or Careem car from Jeddah or Mecca gives a fixed, transparent price for the climb to Taif and is often cheaper and clearer than a negotiated taxi. Confirm the driver will do the intercity trip and allow for the winding mountain road.
A private taxi or arranged car up from Jeddah, its airport or Mecca is convenient with luggage or a group. Agree the full fare in advance, as tourist quotes can be high, and prefer an app-based option where possible.
Within Taif, ride-hailing apps are the easiest way to get around, with the fare set in the app and the route tracked. Coverage is good in the centre and out to Al Hada and the farms, which avoids fare disputes.
Street taxis are available but often lack a working meter, so agree the price before setting off. For spread-out sights and the mountain roads, a booked car or ride-hailing app is usually easier and clearer on price.
Renting a car makes sense in Taif, as the rose farms, Al Hada and Al Shafa are spread out and scenic. Roads are good but mountain sections are steep with hairpin bends, so drive carefully, especially in mist or after rain.
Spring (March to May) is the highlight, when the damask roses bloom and the rose festival fills the air with scent, and autumn (October to November) brings warm days and cool evenings. Thanks to its altitude, Taif stays pleasantly cool in summer and becomes a busy domestic holiday spot from June to August, though hotels fill and roads get crowded. Winter is chilly, especially at night, and the high roads can be cold and misty.
One full day covers Shubra Palace, the downtown souk and a trip up to Al Hada. Two days let you add the Al Shafa highlands, a rose farm in season and a slower pace, and Taif also works as an easy day trip from Jeddah or Mecca.
