Tourist scams in Bahrain — and how to avoid them

These are the tourist scams Trzly has documented across Bahrain, grouped by destination. Each one is real, with a clear way to stay safe. Read before you land.

Taxi driver refuses the meter

কীভাবে কাজ করে: A common issue is a driver who will not start the meter, says it is broken, or quotes a high flat fare once he realises you are a visitor, leaving you to pay several times the real price.

কীভাবে এড়াবেন: Meters are required by law, so politely insist on the meter before moving; if the driver refuses, simply get out and take another. Ride-hailing apps like Uber and Careem fix the price in advance and remove any argument.

Inflated airport taxi fare

কীভাবে কাজ করে: Drivers at the airport sometimes quote well above the normal fare, or approach you inside the terminal offering a 'special' price that turns out to be much higher than a metered or app ride.

কীভাবে এড়াবেন: Use only the official taxi desk or rank outside arrivals, agree the fare or insist on the meter first, or take the far cheaper Bus A2. Never accept a ride from someone touting for business inside the building.

Pearl, gold and 'antique' markups

কীভাবে কাজ করে: In the souq some shops start prices very high, present cultured or imitation pearls as rare natural Bahraini pearls, or push ordinary items as valuable antiques to visitors who do not haggle.

কীভাবে এড়াবেন: Haggling is expected, so treat the first price as a starting point and compare several shops. For pearls or gold buy from established, certificated dealers and ask for paperwork, as genuine natural Bahraini pearls are rare and pricey.

Unlicensed 'taxi' touts

কীভাবে কাজ করে: Unofficial drivers without proper plates or meters approach arrivals at the airport or busy spots offering a lift, then charge inflated fares in an uninsured, sometimes poorly maintained car.

কীভাবে এড়াবেন: Use only clearly marked official taxis, the airport taxi desk, or a ride-hailing app. Decline anyone who approaches you offering a ride, and check the car has a meter and proper taxi markings before getting in.

Service charge and VAT on the bill

কীভাবে কাজ করে: This is not really a scam but a surprise for newcomers: many restaurants and cafes add a service charge and government VAT on top of the listed prices, so the final bill is higher than expected.

কীভাবে এড়াবেন: Check the menu for a note about service and tax, and glance at the itemised bill before paying. The added charges are legitimate, so no separate tip is expected unless service was exceptional.
