A beautifully preserved Moorish palace-fortress rising above the city, with gardens, courtyards, fountains and views down to the port. Combine it with the neighbouring Roman Theatre and Gibralfaro on a single walk. A combined ticket with Gibralfaro is the best value, and entry is free on Sunday afternoons.
A hilltop castle connected to the Alcazaba by old ramparts, offering the finest panorama over Malaga, the bullring and the Mediterranean. You can walk up the steep path or take a bus to the top. Go in the late afternoon for cooler air and golden light, and carry water for the climb.
The city's flagship museum, set in a 16th-century palace in the old town, displaying more than 200 works by Malaga-born Pablo Picasso. Clear, well-curated rooms trace his career across paintings, drawings and ceramics. Book online in high season, and note free entry in the last hours of Sunday.
A grand Renaissance cathedral nicknamed 'the one-armed lady' because its second tower was never finished. The interior and a rooftop tour of the terraces are the highlights, with views over the old town. The rooftop visit costs extra and is worth booking ahead.

The signature dish of Malaga's coast, it is smoky, salty and eaten with your fingers straight off the skewer at a beach chiringuito.
They are at their best in the months from May to August, when the sardines are fattest; order them by the skewer with a cold drink and squeeze of lemon.

Eat it fresh and hot straight from the fryer; a busy, unpretentious marisqueria or the bar inside Atarazanas market usually does the best value version.

The suburban train links the airport with the central Malaga Centro-Alameda and Maria Zambrano stations in about twelve minutes. The cheapest and most reliable airport connection, running every twenty minutes or so. Keep your ticket to exit the barriers.
A direct EMT bus between the airport, the city centre and the port, running frequently through the day. A comfortable option with luggage, though slower than the train in traffic. Pay the flat fare on board.
Official taxis charge a regulated minimum airport fare that rises in the evening, at night and on weekends. Convenient with heavy bags or late arrivals, but confirm the tariff and use only the marked rank outside arrivals.
Malaga's orange EMT city buses cover the centre and suburbs cheaply, with a flat single fare paid on board. Useful for reaching Gibralfaro and outer beaches, though the compact old town is easiest on foot.
White metered taxis are plentiful and reasonably priced for hops across the city and up to the castle. Make sure the meter is running, and note higher night and weekend tariffs. Handy after dark or with shopping.
Malaga's historic core is compact, largely pedestrianised and flat, so walking is the best way to see the cathedral, museums, market and seafront. Only the climb to the Alcazaba and Gibralfaro is steep, so save that for the cooler hours.
Spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October) are the most pleasant, with warm, sunny days, comfortable evenings and thinner crowds than midsummer. July and August are hot and very busy, with peak beach crowds and high prices, while winter is famously mild and quiet, one of the warmest city breaks in mainland Europe though the sea is cool for swimming.
Two full days comfortably cover the Alcazaba, Gibralfaro, the cathedral, the Picasso Museum and the seafront at a relaxed pace. Add extra days to enjoy the beaches or to use Malaga as a base for day trips to Caminito del Rey, Ronda, Cordoba or Granada.
The Cercanias C1 suburban train is the cheapest and usually fastest option, reaching the central station in about twelve minutes. The EMT Line A Airport Express bus is a good alternative with luggage, while official fixed-tariff taxis suit late arrivals or groups.
Yes, Malaga is generally very safe, and violent crime against visitors is rare. The main issues are pickpocketing in crowded tourist streets and a few street ploys like the rosemary-sprig scam, all easily managed by keeping valuables secure and declining strangers who approach you.
Spring and autumn offer warm, sunny weather with fewer crowds than the peak summer months. Malaga is also a mild and pleasant winter city break, though the sea is too cool for comfortable swimming outside the warmer months.
You can get by with English in hotels, museums and tourist restaurants, but a little Spanish is appreciated. Learning a few words like hola, gracias and la cuenta (the bill) goes a long way, and a polite greeting before asking is good manners.
