Order at least five or six and never eat the thick top knots; locals count them to see how many you managed.

This gives distinctive amber and deep red wines with real character, celebrated across the country's wine bars.
Ask for a qvevri or amber wine to taste the traditional style, and try a small pour before committing to a glass.
DrinkWikimedia CommonsA potent clear grape brandy distilled from the leftovers of winemaking, sometimes called Georgian grappa or vodka. Often homemade and fiercely strong, it appears at feasts and is offered with great hospitality, so a small measure goes a long way.

The public bus links the airport with the centre for a flat one-lari fare, ending near the railway station via Liberty Square and Rustaveli. Cheap and reliable but slow, taking over an hour.
Ordering a Bolt on the app is the easiest fair-priced door-to-door option, reaching the centre in around 25 minutes. Far cheaper and clearer than the drivers touting inside the terminal.
Licensed taxis from the official rank are more than a Bolt but still reasonable if you agree the price first. Best for late arrivals or groups with luggage when app cars are scarce.
Two clean, deep and inexpensive lines cross the city and beat the traffic, using the same flat fare and card as the buses. Some stations are very deep, so allow time on the long escalators.
City buses and shared minibuses (marshrutkas) reach everywhere the metro does not, for the same low fare. Routes can be confusing for newcomers, so a maps app helps you find the right stop.

Late spring (April to June) and early autumn (September to October) bring warm, comfortable days ideal for walking the hilly Old Town, with vineyards and city trees at their greenest or turning gold. Midsummer (July and August) is hot and can be humid, while winter is cold and grey with occasional snow, quieter and cheaper but less suited to long strolls.

Georgian is the national language, written in its own alphabet, and Russian is widely understood by older people. English is common among younger Georgians and in tourism, so you will manage easily, and a few Georgian words are warmly received.
