Riyadh is the capital of Saudi Arabia and a rapidly modernising desert city, where glass towers rise beside restored mud-brick heritage and wide highways cut through the plateau. Once a walled oasis town, it is now the country's political and business heart, and recent years have opened it to leisure visitors with new museums, restaurants, parks and entertainment districts. The restored heritage site of At-Turaif in Diriyah, the birthplace of the first Saudi state, sits alongside modern landmarks like the Kingdom Centre and its sky bridge. Beyond the city, the dramatic cliffs of the Edge of the World make a popular desert day trip. Riyadh rewards visitors who plan around the heat, respect local customs and use ride-hailing apps or the new metro to get around. It is a practical, spread-out city best explored over a few days, ideally in the cooler months.

Riyadh has a huge range of restaurants at every price. Local and South Asian eateries offer excellent value, while mall and tower venues cost more for the setting.
