A vast, entirely wooden temple on the seafront, covered in intricate hand-carved figures and still under construction after decades. A standard ticket is around 500 baht and includes the grounds; go in the morning for cooler air and softer light on the carvings. Modest dress is appreciated.
A small island about 7 km offshore with clear water and sandy beaches, reached by a public ferry in around 40 minutes for a few baht each way, or a faster speedboat. A classic day trip for swimming, snorkelling and watersports; agree any jet-ski or parasailing price and condition in advance.
Pattaya's famous after-dark strip running down to Bali Hai pier, lined with bars, clubs, cabaret and seafood restaurants. Pedestrianised at night and a spectacle in itself, but check drink prices before ordering and be firm with touts. Not a place for young families late in the evening.
An 18-metre golden Buddha on Pratumnak Hill between Pattaya and Jomtien, reached by a dragon-flanked staircase, with sweeping views over the bay. Entry is free; dress modestly, remove shoes at the shrine and combine it with the nearby viewpoint at sunset.

Beachside and market stalls cook it to order, often priced by weight.
Check the per-kilo price and watch your seafood weighed before it hits the grill, and eat where locals queue for the freshest catch.

A reliable, tasty introduction to Thai street food.
Add the lime, peanuts and chilli yourself from the little dishes to balance it to your own taste; a version with fresh prawns (pad thai kung) is the classic order.

It can be extremely spicy; ask for 'ped nit noi' (a little spicy) if you are unsure, and specify no dried shrimp or fish sauce if you prefer it milder.

Simple, fragrant and beloved, it is sold at markets, stalls and dedicated shops across the city.
It is at its best in mango season around April and May; buy it freshly assembled so the rice is warm and the mango ripe rather than pre-packed.

The clear version (nam sai) is sharper and lighter; the creamy version (nam khon) is richer. Fish out the lemongrass and lime leaves rather than eating them.

Ask for less sugar (wan noi) if you find it too sweet; a lime version (cha manao) without milk is a lighter, tangier alternative.

A direct coach links Suvarnabhumi Airport with Pattaya in about two hours for roughly 140 baht. Comfortable and air-conditioned, it is by far the cheapest way down from Bangkok and runs several times a day from a marked counter in the airport.
Minivans run frequently between Bangkok and Pattaya from bus terminals and Ekkamai, leaving when full. Fast and cheap, though cramped with luggage. A handy middle option between the airport bus and a private car.
A pre-booked car or metered taxi from Bangkok or its airports to your Pattaya hotel is the most comfortable option, especially with luggage or a group. Agree the price or use an app in advance, as street taxis may quote high flat fares for the run.
Blue pickup trucks running fixed loops along Beach Road and Second Road are the cheap local bus. Flag one down, ride, then buzz and pay a few baht at the window. Confirm it is a shared ride, not a private charter, before boarding.
Ride-hailing apps work well across Pattaya, fix the fare in advance and track the route, making them the easiest way to avoid overcharging. Best for longer trips, late nights or reaching the malls and outer suburbs.
Riders in numbered vests offer quick, cheap hops through traffic for short distances. Agree the fare first and insist on a helmet. Fast and useful solo, but skip it with luggage or if you are not comfortable on the back of a bike.
Central Pattaya is walkable along the beach promenade and between many sights and restaurants. Pavements can be uneven and busy, and the heat is intense midday, so walk in the morning or evening and take a baht bus for longer stretches.
November to February is the best time to visit, with cooler, drier weather and calmer seas ideal for island trips and the beach. March to May is hot and humid, while the rainy season from roughly June to October brings heavy but usually short downpours, lower prices and thinner crowds. Weekends and Thai public holidays fill the city with visitors from Bangkok.
Two to three days is enough to see the Sanctuary of Truth and Big Buddha, spend a day on Koh Larn, and enjoy the beach and food. Add extra days if you want to slow down at Jomtien or use Pattaya as a base for trips further along the coast.

Pattaya is generally safe, and serious crime against visitors is uncommon, but it is known for scams and nightlife trouble. The main risks are jet-ski damage claims, overcharging drivers, padded bar bills and road accidents on scooters, all of which are avoidable with a little care.
Both. Alongside the famous nightlife there are beaches, islands, cabaret shows, water parks, floating markets and temples that suit families and couples. Base yourself around Jomtien or Pratumnak rather than Walking Street if you are travelling with children.
Thailand uses the Thai baht (THB). Cards work in hotels, malls and larger restaurants, but carry cash for baht buses, street food, markets, massages and small bars. ATMs are everywhere but usually charge a fixed foreign-card withdrawal fee.
