Aswan is at its best from November to March, when daytime temperatures settle into the comfortable low-to-mid 20s Celsius and the desert nights turn genuinely cool. December through February is the most popular window, with pleasant sightseeing weather but the biggest crowds and highest prices. Aswan is one of the hottest inhabited places on Earth in summer: from May to September, daytime highs regularly pass 40C and can exceed 45C in June to August, with barely any relief after dark. Visiting between June and September means planning everything around the two cooler windows of the day and resting indoors through the afternoon.
Two to three days work well: one full day for the Abu Simbel excursion, and one or two more for Philae, the High Dam, the Unfinished Obelisk, the Nubian Museum and time on the river. Add a day if you also want to explore Elephantine Island and a Nubian village at a relaxed pace.
Most visitors join a group or private tour, since it's an early departure and a long round trip; a guide also adds real context to the site. Independent travel by shared taxi or the daily flight is possible but takes more planning.
Aswan is generally safe and welcoming, with tourism a major part of the local economy. The main real risks are heat-related rather than crime; take normal city precautions and agree prices for boats, taxis and guides in advance.

Avoid June through August if you can; the heat is extreme even by Egyptian standards and can make outdoor sightseeing genuinely difficult. November to March offers the most comfortable weather, with December to February the most popular and busiest.
