Order it at a busy local restaurant rather than a hotel, and pair it with daqoos, a tangy tomato and chilli sauce spooned over the top.
A distinctive sweet rice dish cooked with dates or sugar, rose water and cardamom until deep golden-brown, traditionally served alongside grilled or fried fish. The sweet-savoury pairing is a beloved and very Bahraini combination that surprises many first-time visitors.

Route A2 links Bahrain International Airport with Bab Al Bahrain in the city centre in around 20 to 25 minutes. By far the cheapest option, air-conditioned and comfortable, running roughly every half hour, though less frequent late at night.
Uber and Careem operate at the airport and are often cheaper and clearer than a standard taxi, with the fare fixed in the app. You will need local data or airport wifi to book and to meet the driver at the designated pickup point.
Official taxis run from the airport to the city and are convenient with luggage or on late arrivals. Use the official desk or rank, and confirm the fare or insist on the meter before setting off to avoid an inflated price.
Metered taxis are the easy way around Manama and its neighbourhoods. Always ask for the meter, which is required by law; if a driver refuses, take another. Carry small change, as drivers often have little on hand.
Ride-hailing apps work well across Bahrain, fix the fare in advance and track the route, which makes them the simplest way to avoid fare disputes. Coverage and prices are good throughout Manama and the wider island.
The old souq around Bab Al Bahrain and the waterfront corniche are pleasant on foot, especially in the cooler evening hours. Distances between the modern districts are longer and hot in summer, so pair walking with short taxi rides.
The best time to visit is the cooler half of the year, roughly November to April, when days are warm and pleasant (around 20 to 27 Celsius) and evenings are comfortable for walking the souq and corniche. Summer, from June to September, is extremely hot and humid, often above 40 Celsius, making outdoor sights hard going, though everything indoors is heavily air-conditioned. Spring and autumn shoulders can bring occasional humidity and dust.
Two days comfortably cover the National Museum, Al Fateh Mosque, the souq at Bab Al Bahrain, the Bahrain Fort and a corniche evening at a relaxed pace. Add a day for old Muharraq and the Pearling Path, or for a trip out to the Tree of Life and the desert.
Bus A2 runs from Bahrain International Airport to Bab Al Bahrain in the centre for a flat fare of only a few hundred fils, far cheaper than a taxi. For door-to-door with luggage, a ride-hailing app is usually cheaper and clearer than a standard airport taxi.
Yes, Manama is generally very safe and Bahrainis are known for their hospitality. Serious crime against visitors is rare; the main annoyances are taxi drivers avoiding the meter and occasional overcharging, which are easily managed with apps and a little care.
Bahrain is more relaxed than some neighbours, but modest dress covering shoulders and knees is respectful in public and the souq. Women are not required to cover their hair except inside mosques, where robes and scarves are provided at the door.
Bahrain uses the Bahraini dinar (BHD), a strong currency pegged to the US dollar and divided into 1,000 fils. Cards are widely accepted in hotels, malls and restaurants, but carry cash in dinars for taxis, the souq, small cafes and bus fares.
