Tourist scams in Qatar — and how to avoid them

These are the tourist scams Trzly has documented across Qatar, grouped by destination. Each one is real, with a clear way to stay safe. Read before you land.

Taxi driver refusing the meter

How it works: A taxi driver, more often outside the official Karwa fleet, does not switch on the meter and later asks for an inflated flat fare, especially near the airport, malls and Souq Waqif.

How to avoid it: Use metered Karwa taxis or an app like Uber or Careem where the price is set in advance. Ask the driver to start the meter at the outset, and simply choose another car if they refuse.

Unlicensed desert-safari operators

How it works: An informal operator offers a cheap desert safari or city tour, then delivers a rushed trip, adds charges, or uses vehicles and guides that are not properly licensed or insured.

How to avoid it: Book desert and city tours through a licensed, well-reviewed operator or your hotel. Confirm the itinerary, inclusions and total price in writing before paying, and be wary of unusually cheap street offers.

Marked-up souvenir prices at the souq

How it works: At Souq Waqif and the gold souq, some stalls quote tourists a high opening price for souvenirs, pashminas, spices or jewellery, expecting you to haggle down from it.

How to avoid it: Bargaining is normal and expected here, so compare a few stalls and offer well below the first price. For gold, buy by weight at the day's rate and stick to established shops.

Overpaying for 'antiques' and trinkets

How it works: Small shops may present mass-produced trinkets, oud, perfumes or 'antique' items as rare or handmade and charge far above their real value.

How to avoid it: Treat claims of rarity with caution and do not feel pressured to buy on the spot. Check similar items and prices elsewhere first, and only spend what the piece is worth to you as a keepsake.
