Colombo's most important Buddhist temple beside Beira Lake, part place of worship and part eclectic museum, crammed with Buddha statues, vintage cars, clocks and curios donated over the years. The serene Seema Malaka pavilion floats on the lake nearby. Dress modestly, cover shoulders and knees, and remove shoes before entering the shrine.
A half-kilometre seafront lawn laid out by the British in 1859, now Colombo's favourite spot for an evening stroll. Come at sunset for kite flyers, families and a row of food carts selling isso wade (prawn fritters) and other snacks. Free and open, it is the best place to feel the pulse of the city.
A dense, chaotic grid of market streets just east of the Fort, where lanes specialise in textiles, electronics, spices, gold and produce. It is loud, crowded and thoroughly authentic. Come to soak up local life and watch your bag in the crush; haggle for anything you buy.
At around 350 metres, the tallest structure in South Asia, shaped like a lotus flower and lit up at night. An observation deck offers panoramic views over the city, harbour and coast. Buy a ticket for the viewing gallery and go on a clear day or at dusk for the best outlook.

It is hearty, cheap and endlessly customisable.
Order it fresh from a busy street kitchen in the evening; a vegetable or egg kottu is a little cheaper than meat or the gooey cheese version.

Plain hoppers scoop up curry and sambol; an egg hopper cooked with an egg in the middle is the classic breakfast.
Have them hot and fresh; an egg hopper with a spoon of lunu miris (chilli-onion sambol) is the perfect quick breakfast.

Look for a busy local lunch spot at midday when the curries are freshly cooked; eating with your right hand, as locals do, is part of the experience.

It appears at almost every Sri Lankan meal and turns plain rice, bread or hoppers into something vivid.
Ask for it alongside hoppers or a simple rice plate; tell the cook if you want it milder, as the chilli can be serious.

Look for it around Ramadan and at Malay and Muslim restaurants, where it is a specialty; served chilled, it is the perfect cool finish to a spicy meal.

Naturally sweet and lightly nutty, it is the island's favourite fresh, cheap thirst-quencher.
Buy from a busy roadside vendor and agree the price first; ask them to scoop out the soft jelly inside once you have finished the water.

Its distinctive sour-musky flavour is an acquired but much-loved local taste.
Try it as a fresh juice from a market stall or juice bar rather than raw; it is an unusual flavour worth sampling at least once.

Public buses, including an express service, link Bandaranaike airport with Colombo Fort for a very small fare. By far the cheapest way into the city and a local experience, but slow, crowded and awkward with large luggage or after a long flight.
Ride-hailing apps operate from a marked pickup point at Bandaranaike and are usually cheaper and clearer than a counter taxi, with the fare fixed in the app. You will need airport wifi or a local SIM to book and find your driver.
Official taxi desks in arrivals offer a set fare to the city, easiest with heavy bags or on late arrivals. Confirm the price at the counter before setting off; it is convenient but generally dearer than booking an app ride.
The classic three-wheeled taxi, cheap and everywhere for short trips through Colombo's traffic. Always ask for the meter or agree a price first; booking through PickMe removes the haggling and caps the fare.
Ride-hailing apps work well across the city and fix the fare in advance, letting you pick a car or a metered tuk-tuk. The simplest, most transparent way to get around and to avoid fare disputes, especially in heat or rain.
The compact Fort and Pettah districts and the Galle Face seafront are best explored on foot, taking in colonial architecture and ocean views. Mind the busy traffic and informal crossings, and carry water, as the heat and humidity are draining.
The best time to visit Colombo is the drier season from December to March, when days are warm and sunny with lower humidity and calm seas, ideal for the seafront and day trips. The southwest monsoon brings heavy rain to the city roughly from May to September, and shorter downpours are possible into the northeast monsoon around October and November. The city stays hot and humid year-round, so off-season visitors trade greener, quieter, cheaper conditions for regular, often intense, afternoon rain.
One to two days is enough to cover the main sights, Gangaramaya Temple, Pettah, the Fort, Galle Face Green, the National Museum and the Lotus Tower, at a relaxed pace. Many travellers use Colombo as a short start or end to a wider Sri Lanka trip rather than a long stay.
Ride-hailing apps, PickMe and Uber, are the easiest and most transparent option, letting you book a car or a metered tuk-tuk with the fare fixed in advance. Tuk-tuks are fine for short hops if you insist on the meter, and the compact Fort and seafront are walkable.
Colombo is generally safe and Sri Lankans are known for their hospitality; serious crime against visitors is uncommon. The main annoyances are tuk-tuk drivers avoiding the meter, gem-shop touts and occasional overcharging, all easily managed with apps, set prices and a little care in crowds.
Do not miss rice and curry, kottu roti, hoppers and pol sambol, washed down with fresh king coconut water. Sweet-toothed visitors should try watalappan, a spiced coconut-jaggery custard. Busy local eateries and street kitchens serve the best versions at very low prices.
The beaches and old fort town of the south coast, including Galle, are a couple of hours away by expressway, and towns like Negombo and Kalutara are closer. The hill country, tea plantations and the ancient cities lie further inland and are better as an overnight rather than a single long day trip.
