Frequent S-Bahn and long-distance trains connect Zurich Airport with the main station in about 12 minutes. By far the best-value and fastest link into the city; buy a single-zone ticket from any machine before boarding.
Tram line 10 runs from the airport into the city and to the main station, a slower but scenic surface option covered by a normal city ticket. Useful if your accommodation is on its route, though the train is quicker.
Metered taxis wait outside arrivals and reach the centre in around 25 minutes. Comfortable with luggage but expensive compared with the train; best kept for late arrivals, groups or heavy bags.
Zurich's dense, punctual tram network is the backbone of city travel and reaches nearly everywhere you will want to go. Buy and validate a ticket before boarding; the same ticket covers connecting buses and S-Bahn in the zone.
The suburban S-Bahn links the centre with the airport, lakeside towns, Uetliberg and the wider region, all on the integrated ZVV ticket system. Fast and frequent, and the easiest way to reach viewpoints and day trips.

Late spring to early autumn (May to September) is the best time, when the city turns to the lake and river, outdoor bathing spots and terraces are open, and the Alps are often visible on clear days. July and August are warmest and busiest; spring and early autumn are pleasant and a little quieter. Winter is cold, grey and can bring snow, but December brings Christmas markets and festive lights.
One full day covers the Old Town, Grossmünster, Bahnhofstrasse and the lakefront at a brisk pace. Two days is more comfortable and lets you add a museum, a lake boat trip and a half-day up Uetliberg or a nearby town.

Zurich is very safe, with low crime against visitors. The main things to watch are ordinary pickpocketing in crowds, occasional overpriced tourist dining and airport taxi overcharging, all easily avoided with a little care.
Locals speak Swiss German, but standard German, and widely English, are understood in shops, hotels and restaurants, so you can get by comfortably in English. A simple grüezi (hello) and merci are appreciated as a courtesy.
