A magnificent hilltop fort-palace of honey sandstone and marble above Maota Lake, with grand courtyards and the dazzling mirror-work of the Sheesh Mahal. Part of a UNESCO listing and Jaipur's flagship sight. Go early to beat the heat and crowds, and walk up or take a jeep rather than the controversial elephant rides.
The iconic five-storey pink facade of honeycombed windows, built so royal women could watch street life unseen. The view from the street is free; a small ticket lets you go inside and up for the view back over the bazaar. Best photographed in the soft morning light from the cafes opposite.

The salty, buttery and sweet trio is eaten together for the full effect.
Order it at a busy traditional restaurant at lunch; it is filling and rich, so come hungry and share a thali to try more dishes.

It is rich, smoky and genuinely hot, a legacy of the royal hunting kitchens of Rajasthan.
It can be very spicy; ask for a milder version if you are sensitive, and pair it with plain rice or bread to temper the heat.

Have it in the morning when batches are freshest; famous shops like those in the old city draw long queues at breakfast.

It is especially associated with the monsoon festivals of Teej and Raksha Bandhan.
Malai ghewar is the richest version; buy it fresh from a reputable sweet shop and eat it within a day or two.

Order the sweet malai lassi in a traditional kulhad clay cup; a single glass is surprisingly filling, so it makes a good light breakfast or afternoon break.

The official prepaid taxi counter inside arrivals fixes the fare to your destination in advance, which avoids haggling after a long flight. Convenient with luggage; keep the printed slip until you arrive.
Ride-hailing apps operate at Jaipur airport and are often cheaper and clearer than a taxi, with the price fixed in the app. You will need mobile data to book and should meet the driver at the designated pickup point.
Auto-rickshaws are the cheapest way into town but drivers rarely use the meter and may quote high; agree the fare first or book one through an app. Fine for light luggage and short of budget travellers.
The classic three-wheeled way to zip around Jaipur, cheap for short hops but almost always negotiated rather than metered for visitors. Agree the fare in advance or use an app-booked auto to avoid disputes.
App-based cabs and autos work well across the city, fix the fare up front and track the route, making them the easiest way to avoid overcharging. Surge pricing can rise during festivals and the January literature festival.
The walled Pink City's grid of bazaars is best explored on foot, weaving between markets and monuments. Traffic is dense and pavements uneven, so watch for vehicles, and take a rickshaw between more distant sights.
October to March is the pleasant season, with warm, dry days and cool evenings ideal for forts and bazaars; December and January can be genuinely chilly at night. April to June is extremely hot, often above 40 degrees Celsius, while July to September brings the monsoon with humidity and occasional heavy downpours. Aim for the cooler months, and note that festivals like Diwali and the January literature festival make the city busy.
Two full days comfortably cover Amber Fort, the City Palace, Hawa Mahal, Jantar Mantar, Nahargarh for sunset and a wander through the bazaars. A third day lets you slow down, add Albert Hall Museum or a craft workshop, or take a day trip.
Jaipur is generally safe and serious crime against visitors is uncommon, but it is an intense city with persistent touts, commission-driven drivers and the well-known gemstone scam. Keep your guard up around unsolicited offers, use ride-hailing apps, and women travellers should take normal big-city precautions, especially after dark.
Jaipur is a genuine centre for gems and jewellery, but never buy stones as an investment or to resell for a stranger, which is a classic scam. Buy only what you want for yourself, from an established, independently reviewed shop, and never one a driver or new 'friend' steers you to.
Use Uber or Ola, which fix the fare in the app and remove arguments, for most trips. For auto-rickshaws, agree the price before getting in, as meters are rarely used for tourists, and carry small notes for markets and entry fees.
