نمای کلی

Jakarta is Southeast Asia's largest metropolis, a vast, humid, low-slung capital of more than ten million people that rewards travelers who lean into its chaos. The historic heart is Kota Tua (Old Town), where Dutch colonial buildings ring the cobbled Fatahillah Square and house a cluster of museums. Nearby, the…

National Monument (Monas)

A 132-metre marble obelisk topped with a gold-leaf flame, Monas is Jakarta's defining landmark in the huge Merdeka Square park. An elevator carries visitors to the observation deck for city views, and the base holds the National History Museum. Payment is cashless via a JakCard, buyable on-site.

Kota Tua & Fatahillah Square

Jakarta's Dutch colonial old town centres on Fatahillah Square, a wide cobbled plaza framed by ochre 18th-century buildings. Four museums ring it, including the Jakarta History Museum in the old city hall. Rent a colourful bicycle, watch street performers and photograph the faded grandeur; the square itself is free.

Istiqlal Mosque

The largest mosque in Southeast Asia, Istiqlal holds around 200,000 worshippers beneath a vast 45-metre dome. Non-Muslim visitors are welcome outside prayer times and can join a free guided tour, with robes provided for those needing to cover up. It faces the Catholic cathedral, a deliberate statement of interfaith harmony.

Jakarta Cathedral

A twin-spired neo-Gothic Catholic church completed in 1901, standing directly opposite Istiqlal Mosque. Its cool, vaulted interior and stained glass offer a peaceful contrast to the city outside, and a small museum in the towers displays religious artifacts. Dress respectfully as it remains an active place of worship.

The must-try local dishes, sweets and fruits — including the exotic ones you won't find back home.

Nasi GorengDishNasi goreng, Indonesian fried rice - Helito / Wikimedia Commons (CC BY-SA 4.0)

Nasi Goreng

Indonesia's beloved fried rice, wok-tossed with sweet soy (kecap manis), garlic, shallots and chili, then topped with a fried egg. It is served everywhere from street carts to hotels, often with chicken, prawns or krupuk crackers. Cheap, filling and available at any hour.

Order it from a busy nighttime kaki lima (street cart) for the smokiest, most authentic version.

Soto BetawiDishSoto Betawi, Jakarta's coconut-beef soup - Irhanz / Wikimedia Commons (CC BY-SA 4.0)

Soto Betawi

The signature soup of Jakarta's native Betawi people: a rich beef broth enriched with coconut milk, studded with tender beef, fragrant with lemongrass and spices, served with rice, potato, tomato and fried shallots. Hearty and warming despite the tropical heat.

Squeeze in the lime and add sambal and emping crackers for the full local experience.

Kerak TelorDishKerak telor, a Betawi street snack - Dainsleaf / Wikimedia Commons (public domain)

Kerak Telor

An iconic Betawi street snack often called a spicy omelette, made from glutinous rice and egg cooked in a flat clay pan over open coals until crisp, finished with dried shrimp, fried grated coconut, fried shallots and chili. Vendors dramatically flip the pan over the flame.

Best hunted at cultural spots like Setu Babakan or during the Jakarta Fair; expect around Rp25,000–50,000.

Gado-GadoDishGado-gado, Indonesian salad in peanut sauce - Midori / Wikimedia Commons (CC BY 3.0)

Gado-Gado

A signature Indonesian salad of blanched vegetables, boiled egg, potato, tofu and tempeh smothered in a thick, sweet-savory peanut sauce, often topped with krupuk crackers. A satisfying and largely vegetarian option; the name loosely means 'mix-mix'.

Ask for the peanut sauce mild if you are sensitive to chili, and look for freshly ground sauce for the best flavour.

Es Doger

A refreshing pink shaved-ice dessert made with coconut milk, condensed milk and grated coconut, loaded with fermented cassava (tape), black sticky rice and red-tinted syrup. A cooling street treat perfect for Jakarta's heat — colourful, sweet and mildly creamy.

Buy from a mobile es doger cart; ask for less syrup if you prefer it not too sweet.

Grab / Gojek car from the airport ١٫٣ ساعت‎IDR ١٢٥٬٤٧٧–٢٥٠٬٩٥٥ · ‎$٧–١٤

An app-based door-to-door car; airport-to-city fares run higher than the reverse due to demand. Head to the marked ride-hailing pickup zones outside the terminals.

Take only official Blue Bird / Silver Bird from the sanctioned taxi counter and insist on the meter plus the airport surcharge. Reliable but pricier and slower than the train in traffic; ignore touts in arrivals.

اردیبهشت–شهریور

The dry season, roughly May to September, is the best time to visit, with less rain, lower humidity and easier sightseeing. The wet season, November to March, brings heavy downpours and localized flooding that worsen the already-tough traffic. Jakarta is hot and humid year-round, so pace outdoor activity and carry water.

ایمنی

هشدارJakarta's traffic is dense, chaotic and among the worst in the region, and motorbikes weave unpredictably between lanes. Cross roads with great care, ideally at signals or footbridges, and factor long travel times into every plan. If riding a Gojek or Grab motorbike, always wear the provided helmet.
احتیاطDuring the November–March rainy season, sudden downpours can flood streets and underpasses within minutes and paralyze traffic. Avoid low-lying areas during heavy rain, keep some schedule flexibility, and monitor local weather alerts. Flash flooding is a recurring seasonal hazard.
احتیاطPickpocketing and bag-snatching occur in crowded markets, on packed buses and at transit hubs and festivals. Keep phones and wallets secure and out of sight, wear bags across the body in front of you, and stay alert in dense crowds. Violent crime against tourists is rare, but opportunistic theft is not.

نکات پنهان

Escape the mall circuit at Setu Babakan Betawi cultural village in the south, where family warungs cook kerak telor and soto Betawi beside a lake.
Time Kota Tua for late afternoon: rent a bright vintage bicycle on Fatahillah Square, then have coffee at the historic Cafe Batavia as the colonial facades glow.
Sunday morning is Jakarta's secret window — Sudirman-Thamrin's Car Free Day closes the main avenues to traffic for joggers, cyclists and street-food stalls.

سوالات متداول

How many days do I need in Jakarta?

Two to three days covers the main sights — Monas and Merdeka Square, Kota Tua old town, Istiqlal Mosque and the cathedral, and a museum or two — with time for malls and street food. Build in generous buffers for traffic, and use Jakarta as a gateway to the rest of Java.

How do I get around Jakarta?

For fixed, cashless, door-to-door trips use the Grab or Gojek apps (car or motorbike). For longer corridors, the MRT and TransJakarta busway are clean, cheap and skip much of the traffic — buy a prepaid e-money card for both. Avoid unmetered street taxis.

Is Jakarta safe for tourists?

Yes, broadly. Violent crime against visitors is uncommon, but watch for petty theft in crowds, fake taxis and money-changer scams, and take real care with the traffic. Standard city precautions — secure your valuables, use official transport, and stay aware — go a long way.

Where should I stay?

Central Jakarta around Menteng, Thamrin and Sudirman is the most convenient base, close to Monas, business districts, malls and the MRT. Kemang and South Jakarta suit those wanting cafes and a greener feel; staying near an MRT or TransJakarta stop anywhere makes getting around far easier.

Can I drink the tap water?

No. Tap water in Jakarta is not safe to drink — stick to bottled or properly boiled/filtered water, which is cheap and everywhere. Be cautious with ice from unknown street vendors, though reputable cafes and restaurants use safe commercial ice.
