Watch out in Ajloun

Unofficial 'guides' at the castle or reserveBook guided trails only through the RSCN visitor centre or Wild Jordan, and buy castle tickets only at the official gate. Politely decline unsolicited offers.
Amman taxi overcharge to AjlounUse the Tabarbour minibus/shared-taxi station for a fraction of the cost, or agree a fixed private-taxi price in advance by comparing it with a ride-hailing app estimate first.
Overpriced 'handmade' souvenirsCompare prices at more than one stall, buy directly from the RSCN craft workshops or village cooperatives when possible, and don't feel rushed by a countdown-style sales pitch.

نمای کلی

Ajloun sits in the wooded hills of northern Jordan, a world away from the desert scenery most visitors expect. Its Ayyubid-era castle, Qal'at ar-Rabad, was built in 1184 to watch over trade routes and iron mines, and its ramparts still look out over the Jordan Valley. A short drive away, the Ajloun Forest Reserve…

Taste it here

The must-try local dishes, sweets and fruits — including the exotic ones you won't find back home.

Dish

Mansaf

Jordan's national dish: tender lamb in a tangy dried-yogurt (jameed) sauce over rice, traditionally eaten by hand from one shared platter.

Dish

Maqluba

An 'upside-down' rice, meat and fried-vegetable dish tipped out of its pot at the table — a Jordanian favourite for family gatherings.

Sweet

Knafeh

A warm, syrup-soaked cheese pastry topped with crushed pistachios — the Levant's most beloved dessert, sold fresh by weight in sweet shops.

Must-try

Ajloun olive oil

Ajloun's oak-covered hills hold some of Jordan's oldest olive groves; look for a village press or family stall selling this season's cold-pressed oil.

Drink

Limonana (mint lemonade)

A blended, ice-cold mix of lemon juice and mint — the go-to refresher on a warm day in northern Jordan.

بهترین زمان برای بازدید

اسفند–اردیبهشت و مهر–آبان

March to May brings wildflowers and mild, green hiking weather, while October and November offer cool air and autumn colour in the oak forest. Summer is pleasantly cooler than Amman or the Jordan Valley but can still be warm at midday. Winter (December to February) is genuinely cold and can bring snow, which is beautiful but limits some trail access.

ایمنی

احتیاطAjloun sits at altitude and can receive snow between December and February. Roads may become slippery or briefly close after heavy snowfall, so check conditions before driving up in winter.
احتیاطReserve trails range from an easy short loop to a difficult full-day hike with uneven, rocky ground. Wear proper footwear, carry water, and choose a trail that matches your fitness level.
احتیاطPublic minibuses from Amman largely stop running on Fridays, leaving only shared or private taxis at a higher fare. Plan your travel day accordingly if you are on a tight budget.

نکات پنهان

Ein Janna village — a 'spring of paradise' with a lovely view back toward the castle, overlooked by most day visitors.
Wadi Rajib and the Aziq waterfalls — a running stream and old watermills, far quieter than the crowds at the castle.
Eagle Point (around 1,100 m) on the soap-house trail — a high panoramic viewpoint over the forest and valley.
Orjan's orchards and springs (fig, pomegranate, olive) — an unhurried, non-touristy village walk.
Tell Mar Elias itself — far calmer than the castle despite its mosaics and status as a recognised pilgrimage site.

سوالات متداول

How do I get from Amman to Ajloun without a car?

Take a minibus from Amman's Tabarbour (North) station; it takes about 90 minutes and is by far the cheapest option. On Fridays only shared taxis run, at a somewhat higher fare.

Is the Jordan Pass valid at Ajloun Castle?

Yes, Ajloun Castle entry is included on the Jordan Pass alongside Petra and other major sites. Show your pass at the gate instead of paying again.

How long do I need to see Ajloun properly?

A half day covers the castle and a short forest walk. A full day lets you add a longer RSCN trail, Mar Elias or Anjara, and a village meal without rushing.

Can I combine Ajloun with Jerash in one trip?

Yes. Jerash is only about 25 km away, and many visitors pair the Roman ruins there with Ajloun's castle and forest reserve as a single day trip from Amman.

Does it really snow in Ajloun?

Yes, thanks to its elevation and forest cover, Ajloun is one of the cooler, greener parts of Jordan and can see snow between December and February, unlike most of the country.

Do I need to book the forest reserve trails in advance?

The short self-guided Roe Deer Trail needs no booking, but the longer guided trails (Rasoun, Prophet's Trail, the full-day Castle Trail) should be booked ahead through RSCN, especially on weekends.
