The Maldives' largest mosque, crowned by a golden dome and able to hold over 5,000 worshippers, at the heart of the Islamic Centre that dominates Malé's skyline. Non-Muslim visitors are usually welcome outside prayer times; dress modestly, remove your shoes and check the current visiting hours locally.
Set in the green Sultan Park, once part of the royal palace grounds, the National Museum holds royal thrones, ceremonial objects and rare pre-Islamic coral carvings. A calm, air-conditioned stop that gives real context to the country's history; note it closes on Fridays and public holidays.
The country's oldest mosque, built in 1658 from intricately carved coral stone with fine lacquer work and an unusual stepped minaret. It sits on the Maldives' UNESCO tentative list; non-Muslim visitors usually need permission from the Islamic Ministry and should dress conservatively.
A lively waterfront hall where fishermen land the day's tuna and vendors clean and sell the catch on the spot, busiest in the late afternoon. Free to wander and one of the most authentic sights in the city; expect wet floors, strong smells and plenty of local colour.

It is served with rice, lime, chilli and onion, and often alongside mas huni and roshi, to be mixed to taste.
Squeeze in plenty of lime and add a spoon of rihaakuru or chilli to bring the simple broth to life.

Order a mixed plate of hedhikaa with tea in the late afternoon, and pay by the piece as the locals do.
The young green coconut is a national symbol of the Maldives and even appears on the country's emblem. Cracked open, its cool, lightly sweet water is the perfect refresher in the tropical heat, and the soft jelly flesh inside is scooped out and eaten afterwards.
Buy one fresh from a stall and drink it on the spot; ask the seller to split it so you can eat the tender flesh.
Sweet, strong black tea, known as sai, is the social drink of the Maldives, sipped through the day and especially with an afternoon spread of short eats. Served hot and heavily sweetened, sometimes with condensed milk, it accompanies almost every teahouse visit.
Pair it with a plate of hedhikaa at a local 'sai hotaa' teahouse for the authentic Malé experience.

A cheap public ferry crosses the short stretch of water between the airport island and Malé in about ten to fifteen minutes. Easily the most economical way into the city, though departures are not always exactly on schedule.
Shuttle and public buses run over the Sinamalé bridge linking the airport with Malé and Hulhumalé for a small fare. A comfortable, air-conditioned middle option, useful if you have some luggage but do not want a taxi.
Taxis drive over the bridge from Velana airport to the city for a modest flat fare, reaching central Malé in around fifteen minutes. Convenient with luggage or on late arrivals; confirm the price before setting off.
Flat-fare taxis are plentiful for crossing Malé's dense streets, with a ride costing only a couple of dollars. Agree the fare first, as there are no meters, and carry small change since drivers rarely have much.
Local apps such as Avas Ride and PickMe let you book a taxi with the fare fixed in advance, which avoids any dispute over price. You will need local data or wifi, and coverage is good across Malé and Hulhumalé.
Malé is tiny and most sights are within a short walk of one another, so exploring on foot is the natural way to see it. Streets are narrow and busy with scooters, so watch the traffic and take shade in the midday heat.
Frequent ferries and bridge buses connect Malé with the reclaimed island of Hulhumalé and its long public beach. Cheap and regular, they make an easy half-day trip out of the crowded capital.
The dry north-east monsoon from November to April is the best time to visit, bringing sunny skies, calm seas and lower humidity, with the peak season and highest prices around December to February. The wet south-west monsoon from May to October is hotter and more humid with heavier rain and occasional storms, though showers are often short and prices are lower. Malé is warm year-round, so light, modest clothing and sun protection are useful in every season.
One full day is enough to see the Grand Friday Mosque, the National Museum, the old coral-stone mosque and the fish market on foot. Add a second day if you want to relax on Hulhumalé's beach or use the city as a base before heading to a resort or local island.
Yes. Unlike the resorts, Malé is a working Muslim city where modest clothing covering shoulders and knees is expected in the streets for both men and women. Swimwear is only appropriate at designated beaches like Rasfannu or Hulhumalé's bikini beach.
No. Alcohol is prohibited on all inhabited islands in the Maldives, including Malé and Hulhumalé, and is not sold in shops, cafes or local guesthouses. It is served only on private resort islands and a few designated hotels away from local communities.
Velana International Airport sits on the neighbouring island of Hulhulé, linked to Malé by the Sinamalé bridge. You can take a cheap public ferry across the water, a shuttle bus over the bridge, or a taxi, all of which take only around fifteen minutes.
The local currency is the Maldivian rufiyaa (MVR). US dollars are widely accepted but often at a poor rate, so it is worth carrying some rufiyaa for taxis, teahouses, markets and ferries, and paying in the local currency for the best value on small purchases.
