Watch out in Rotterdam

Pickpocketing at Centraal, markets and on tramsKeep your bag zipped and in front of you, secure your phone, and be extra alert when a tram or platform is crowded or someone bumps into you. Carry only what you need for the day and stay aware in the busiest tourist spots.
Bike-rental damage disputesRent from a well-reviewed, established shop, photograph the bike yourself before riding, keep your receipt, and always lock it properly to a fixed stand with the locks provided. Ask up front exactly what happens if the bike is damaged.
Overpriced tourist-strip diningWalk a street or two away from the busiest squares and the riverside, look for where locals and office workers eat, and check the printed menu and prices before you sit down. The same money buys much better food a short walk on.

نمای کلی

Rotterdam is the Netherlands' second city and Europe's largest port, a place that feels unlike anywhere else in the country. Flattened in the Second World War, it rebuilt itself not with canals and gabled houses but with bold, experimental architecture, and today its skyline of towers, the great arc of the Erasmus…

Markthal

A vast, arch-shaped covered market hall whose curved interior is painted with an enormous, colourful mural of fruit, flowers and fish. Free to walk through, it is packed with food stalls selling Dutch snacks, cheese, fresh produce and world street food, with apartments built into the arch above. A must-see and one of Rotterdam's signature buildings.

Cube Houses (Kubuswoningen)

Rotterdam's famous cluster of tilted, bright-yellow cube homes balanced on their corners, designed by Piet Blom in the 1980s. Free to admire and photograph from outside; one of them, the Kijk-Kubus 'show cube', is open as a small museum for a few euros so you can see how the strange geometry works inside.

Erasmus Bridge

The elegant white cable-stayed bridge nicknamed 'the Swan', spanning the Nieuwe Maas and linking the old centre with the modern Kop van Zuid district. Free to walk or cycle across, it gives the best views of the skyline and is especially beautiful lit up at dusk. The riverbanks around it are a fine spot for a stroll.

Euromast

Rotterdam's 185-metre observation tower with a panoramic viewing platform over the city, port and river. Standard entry is around EUR 35; the higher rotating 'Euroscoop' elevator to the very top costs a little more. Pricey, but the view is the best in the city and there is a restaurant and even abseiling for the adventurous.

Taste it here

The must-try local dishes, sweets and fruits — including the exotic ones you won't find back home.

Dish

Bitterballen

Deep-fried, breadcrumb-coated balls of thick meat ragout served piping hot with mustard, the classic Dutch bar snack found in cafes and pubs across Rotterdam. Usually made with beef, though some recipes use veal or a mix, and they are a beloved part of the Dutch 'borrel' (drinks) ritual.

Order a portion to share with a drink, and if you avoid pork ask what the filling is, as recipes vary; halal-friendly and vegetarian versions are increasingly available in this multicultural city.

Sweet

Stroopwafel

Two thin waffle layers pressed around a gooey caramel-syrup filling, the Netherlands' best-known sweet treat, sold fresh and warm at market stalls including inside the Markthal. Simple, cheap and irresistible straight off the griddle.

Buy one warm from a stall rather than pre-packed, and rest it over a hot drink for a minute to soften the syrup for the classic experience.

Dish

Haring (raw herring)

Lightly cured raw young herring, a Dutch institution, traditionally eaten with chopped raw onion and pickles. Sold from fish stalls and snack bars, it is milder than it sounds and a genuine taste of Dutch food culture by the water.

Have it 'Hollandse Nieuwe' in season, served in bite-sized pieces with onion and a little flag toothpick, or tucked into a soft white bun as a broodje haring if raw fish feels bold.

Dish

Kibbeling

Bite-sized chunks of battered, deep-fried white fish served with a garlic or tartare sauce, a hugely popular Dutch seafood snack at markets and fish stalls. Crisp, hot and satisfying, and a natural fit in a port city like Rotterdam.

Grab a fresh portion with sauce from a market fish stall; it contains no pork and is an easy, widely available option, though check the frying setup if you avoid shared oil.

Sweet

Poffertjes

Small, fluffy yeasted mini-pancakes cooked to order on a special dimpled cast-iron pan and dusted with powdered sugar and a knob of butter, a favourite Dutch market and fairground treat that children and adults alike love.

Eat them fresh and hot from a stall with plenty of powdered sugar; ask for the plain butter-and-sugar version for the traditional taste.

Dish

Dutch cheese (Gouda)

The Netherlands is famous for its cheese, above all Gouda, sold young and mild to aged and crumbly at markets, cheese shops and the Markthal stalls. Tasting your way through a few ages is one of the simplest food pleasures in Rotterdam.

Ask a cheese stall for samples of young versus aged Gouda before buying, and pick up a vacuum-packed wedge as an easy, cheap souvenir to take home.

رفتن و گشتن

کرایه‌های واقعی، نه قیمت‌های گردشگری.

نحوه رسیدن
Train from Schiphol ٢٥ دقیقه‎$١٤–٢٠

The fast NS intercity from Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport reaches Rotterdam Centraal in about 25 minutes and is the easiest, cheapest way in. Tap a contactless card (OVpay) or buy a ticket; the slower Sprinter costs a little less.

Bus from Rotterdam The Hague Airport ٣٠ دقیقه‎$٦–٧

From Rotterdam's own small airport, RET bus 33 runs to Rotterdam Centraal for a normal city fare of about EUR 5.50 in around half an hour. Simple with a contactless card and far cheaper than a taxi.

Airport taxi ٢٠ دقیقه‎$٣٥–٥٠

Convenient door-to-door but much dearer than the train or bus. Use only the official rank or a booked app car, never a driver touting inside the terminal, and insist on the meter or a fixed quote agreed in advance.

Live directions & times in MapsReal routes from the airport or your spot — opens Google Maps
جابه‌جایی در محل
Metro (RET)‎$٤–٥

Rotterdam's clean, fast metro is the backbone of city travel, crossing the river and reaching the outer districts. Tap in and out with a contactless bank card (OVpay), charged by distance, or use a 2-hour or day ticket.

Trams (RET)‎$٤–٥

The RET tram network fills in the centre and inner neighbourhoods the metro misses, on the same tap-and-go fare. Trams share the road, so board and alight with care and watch for cyclists.

Cycling‎$١٢–١٨

Flat and cycle-friendly, Rotterdam is easy to explore by rented bike on its marked lanes. Use the bike lanes, signal your turns, and lock up securely to a fixed stand to avoid theft.

Water taxi‎$٥–١٢

Fast little boats zip across the Nieuwe Maas between the old centre and the Kop van Zuid and Hotel New York, a fun and scenic way to cross the river. Fares depend on distance and passengers; agree the price before you board.

Walking the centre

The compact centre — the Markthal, Cube Houses, Blaak, the old harbour and the river — is enjoyable and easy on foot. Watch for fast bikes and trams when crossing, and mind the unfenced water along the harbour and river.

بهترین زمان برای بازدید

فروردین–شهریور

The best time to visit Rotterdam is late spring to early autumn (April to September), when the weather is mildest, the days are long, and the river terraces, festivals and rooftop bars come alive. Summer (June to August) is the liveliest and busiest, with big events like the Summer Carnival and North Sea Jazz, while spring brings mild days and a nearby tulip season. Winter is cold, grey and short on daylight but quieter and cheaper, and the modern indoor sights — the Markthal, Maritime Museum and Kunsthal — are good rainy-day options. Rotterdam's weather is changeable year-round, so pack a rain jacket whatever the season.

ایمنی

احتیاطRotterdam is very safe, but as in any big city petty theft happens in crowds — at Rotterdam Centraal, in the Markthal and on packed trams and metros. Keep bags zipped and in front, secure your phone, and stay alert if someone jostles you or creates a distraction.
احتیاطBikes have their own marked lanes and move fast, and visitors often mistake a red cycle lane for the pavement. Look both ways before crossing a bike lane, never stand or stop in one, and be predictable when walking near cyclists.
احتیاطRotterdam sits on the wide Nieuwe Maas with open quaysides and harbours, and many stretches have no railings. Take care walking or cycling near the water's edge, especially after dark or after drinking, and keep children well back.

نکات پنهان

Cross the river by water taxi to Hotel New York, the grand old Holland America Line building on the Kop van Zuid, for a drink with a skyline view instead of taking the metro.
Ride the lift up the Euromast at dusk, or if that feels steep just walk the Erasmus Bridge at sunset for the same sweeping skyline for free.
Graze your way through the Markthal's stalls for cheese, stroopwafels and world street food, then look up at the giant painted 'Horn of Plenty' ceiling above you.

سوالات متداول

How many days do I need in Rotterdam?

One to two days covers the highlights — the Markthal, Cube Houses, Erasmus Bridge, a harbour tour and a walk through the modern centre. A second or third day lets you add the Euromast, a museum or two and a day trip to the Kinderdijk windmills or nearby Delft.

Is Rotterdam worth visiting compared to Amsterdam?

Yes, and it is a deliberate contrast. Where Amsterdam is all canals and 17th-century houses, Rotterdam is bold modern architecture, a working port and a younger, edgier feel. Many travellers do both, as they are only about 25 to 40 minutes apart by train.

How do I get around Rotterdam?

The RET metro and tram network is clean, cheap and easy — just tap in and out with a contactless bank card (OVpay). The centre is walkable, water taxis cross the river, and renting a bike is a great local option on the flat, cycle-friendly streets.

Is Rotterdam safe for tourists?

Rotterdam is one of the safer big cities in Europe, with little serious crime. The main thing to watch is pickpocketing in crowds at Centraal, the markets and on trams, plus ordinary care with fast bikes and open water. Take normal precautions and you will be fine.

Can I find halal or vegetarian food easily?

Yes. Rotterdam is very multicultural, so halal restaurants and takeaways (Turkish, Surinamese, Middle Eastern and more) are widespread, and vegetarian and vegan options are common across the city. Note that some Dutch snacks like bitterballen contain pork or beef, so ask before ordering.
