These are the tourist scams Trzly has documented across مالزی, grouped by destination. Each one is real, with a clear way to stay safe. Read before you land.
Unmetered taxis, especially at the airport and tourist spots, quote an inflated flat fare, claim the meter is broken, or take long detours. Some drivers cancel your Grab and ask for cash at a higher price.
Use the Grab app so the price is fixed in advance, or insist on the meter in a licensed taxi. At the airport use the official taxi coupon counter or the train, and never accept a driver who approaches you in the arrivals hall.
Gem, watch and electronics touts
A friendly stranger strikes up a conversation and steers you to a shop selling 'duty-free' gems, watches or gadgets at a special price, which turn out to be fake or hugely overpriced.
Be wary of anyone who befriends you and then leads you to a specific shop. Buy valuables only from established stores, never from a stranger's recommendation, and walk away from high-pressure pitches.
The 'it's closed' diversion
Near a temple or attraction, someone tells you it is closed, under renovation or reserved for a ceremony, then offers to take you to another place, usually a shop or overpriced tour where they earn a commission.
Check opening hours yourself and walk up to the official entrance to confirm. Ignore unsolicited helpers who claim a sight is shut and offer an alternative.
Money-changer shortchange
A back-street exchange advertises an attractive rate, then applies a hidden fee, uses a worse rate at the counter, or counts the notes short during the handover.
Use licensed money changers in malls, count the cash fully before leaving the counter, and confirm the exact amount you will receive before handing over your money.
Langkawi taxis do not use meters and set their own flat fares, so drivers may quote a much higher price once they see you are a tourist, or refuse a fair rate for a short hop.
Use the prepaid coupon desk at the airport and jetty, agree the fare clearly before getting in elsewhere, and use the Grab app where possible, which fixes the price in advance and removes the argument.
Seafood billed by weight
Some beach and floating restaurants sell fish and shellfish by weight without stating the rate, then present a huge bill; a notorious case saw a family charged over a thousand ringgit for a single sea bass, prompting a government investigation.
Ask the price per hundred grams up front, watch the seafood being weighed, and get the full total agreed in writing before it is cooked. Choose busy, well-reviewed places with printed prices.
Watersport and jet-ski payment scams
Some operators, or people posing as them online, demand full payment in advance and then fail to deliver, or aggressively claim damage to a jet ski afterwards to keep a deposit.
Book with an established, well-reviewed operator, avoid paying the full amount upfront, and photograph any rented equipment before use so you have a record of its condition to counter false damage claims.
Island-hopping tout and upsell
Touts on the beach sell island-hopping trips with vague promises, then the tour skips advertised stops, feels rushed, or pushes extra fees for things you assumed were included.
Book through a reputable agency or your hotel, confirm exactly which islands and activities are included and for how long, and settle the full price before boarding rather than on the water.
Counterfeit duty-free goods
Because Langkawi is duty-free, a few stalls sell counterfeit or watered-down spirits, fake branded chocolate or cigarettes passed off as genuine bargains.
Buy alcohol, chocolate and tobacco from established, busy duty-free shops rather than roadside stalls, check that bottle seals and packaging are intact, and be wary of prices that look far too good to be true.
Some Penang taxi drivers will not switch on the meter, claim it is broken, or quote a high flat fare once they realise you are a tourist, leaving you to pay several times the fair price for a short ride.
Agree the meter or a price before getting in, and simply walk away if the driver refuses. Better still, use Grab, which fixes the fare in the app in advance and removes any argument over the price.
Airport limousine touts
Inside the airport arrivals hall, men may approach offering a 'limousine' or private car and quote a flat, inflated fare far above the official coupon taxi or Grab price.
Ignore anyone touting inside the terminal. Use the marked official taxi coupon counter or order a Grab from the designated ride-hailing pickup point outside, where prices are set and transparent.
Grab driver asks for extra cash
Occasionally a Grab driver will accept the booking then ask for extra cash on top of the app fare, claim the app price is wrong, or pressure you to cancel and pay a higher flat rate.
The app fare is the agreed price; you do not owe more. Decline extra cash politely, pay only what the app shows, and report the driver in the app. If a driver keeps cancelling, book again and choose another.
Unpriced stall overcharging
A few stalls, especially those selling seafood or 'special' portions to tourists, do not display prices and then quote an inflated total once you have eaten, banking on you not questioning it.
Ask the price before ordering, particularly for seafood or anything sold by weight or as a 'large' portion. Stick to busy stalls with clear prices, and check your bill against the posted menu.
Fake antiques and marked-up souvenirs
Some tourist-facing shops present ordinary mass-made items as rare antiques or local handicrafts, or start prices very high for visitors who do not haggle.
Treat 'antique' claims with scepticism and compare a few shops before buying. Gentle bargaining is normal at markets and souvenir stalls, so expect to pay noticeably less than the first price quoted.
