Istanbul

Where Europe and Asia meet across the Bosphorus

Istanbul is Turkey's largest city and its cultural heart, straddling two continents across the Bosphorus strait. For centuries it was the capital of the Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman empires, and that layered history shows everywhere, from the domes of Hagia Sophia to the tiled halls of Topkapi Palace and the labyrinth of the Grand Bazaar. The historic Sultanahmet peninsula holds most of the famous sights within walking distance, while neighbourhoods like Karakoy, Kadikoy and Balat reward slower wandering with cafes, markets and street life. A ferry ride across the water is one of the city's great simple pleasures, offering skyline views for the price of a public ticket. Istanbul is busy, generous and endlessly layered, best enjoyed with an appetite for street food, an eye for a fair price when bargaining, and comfortable shoes for its hills and cobbles. It rewards several days of exploring on both the European and Asian shores.

IST airport taxi to Sultanahmet

Istanbul Airport is far from the centre, so a legitimate metered taxi is genuinely expensive. Insist on the meter and be aware the metro plus tram is far cheaper.

Airport shuttle bus

The official airport shuttle to central districts is a comfortable budget option. Pay with IstanbulKart or card and check which stop is closest to your hotel.

Single public-transport ride

Buy an IstanbulKart from a machine and load credit. One card can pay for several people, and each tram, metro or bus ride is very cheap.

Mid-range restaurant meal

Eat one street back from the main tourist squares for better prices. Check that prices are printed on the menu before ordering.

Glass of Turkish tea
per glass
‎TRY ٢٤–٩٥ · ‎$١–٢

Tea is cheap almost everywhere. Be wary only of venues with no visible prices, especially near major sights.

Street doner or simit
per item
‎TRY ٧١–٢٣٨ · ‎$٢–٥

Street snacks are excellent value. A simit from a cart or a doner from a busy local spot costs a fraction of sit-down prices.

Public commuter ferry

The regular municipal ferries give you the same Bosphorus views as a tour for the price of a normal transport ride. Pay with IstanbulKart.

The dropped shoe-shine brush

A shoe shiner walks ahead and 'accidentally' drops a brush. If you kindly pick it up and hand it back, he insists on shining your shoes and then demands a steep fee.

Return the brush without engaging, or simply walk on. Never accept an unrequested shine, and agree any price in advance if you do want one.

No-price menu bill shock

A restaurant, often near tourist sights, has no prices on the menu or adds unrequested extras and a large 'cover charge', producing a shocking bill.

Only eat where prices are clearly printed, confirm the cost of anything brought to the table, and ask for an itemised bill. Refuse items you did not order.

Taxi meter and route tricks

Drivers claim the meter is broken, take long detours, run a higher night tariff by day, or swap a large note for a smaller one and demand more.

Use a ride-hailing app or a taxi-hailing app where possible, insist on the meter, watch the route on your phone, and pay with small, counted notes.

The friendly-local bar setup

A friendly stranger invites a solo traveller for a drink at a bar, where hostesses join the table and an enormous bill appears, enforced by staff.

Be cautious of strangers steering you to a specific bar. Choose your own venue, keep your tab visible, and leave if anything feels staged.

Metro from Istanbul Airport

The metro links the airport to the city and connects to the tram network for Sultanahmet. It is slower than a taxi but far cheaper. Use an IstanbulKart.

Comfortable coaches run from both airports to central districts. A good middle option between the cheap metro and an expensive taxi.

Fastest door-to-door but genuinely pricey because the airport is far out. Insist on the meter and avoid drivers who quote a flat inflated fare.

T1 tram line‎TRY

The main tram runs through Sultanahmet past most historic sights and over to the Galata area. Cheap, frequent and easy for first-time visitors.

Metro network‎TRY

A clean, expanding metro covers the newer districts and both airports. Pair it with the tram and ferries using one IstanbulKart.

Bosphorus and Golden Horn ferries‎TRY

Public ferries connect the European and Asian shores and double as a scenic ride. Among the best-value experiences in the city.

Late spring (April to June) and early autumn (September to October) bring mild, pleasant weather ideal for walking and ferries. Summer is hot and very crowded, while winter is cool, grey and sometimes rainy but much quieter.

Pickpocketing happens in crowded spots like the tram, the bazaars and busy squares. Keep bags zipped and in front of you, and carry only what you need for the day.
Traffic is heavy and drivers can be assertive, and some crossings are chaotic. Cross with care, use pedestrian signals and underpasses, and watch for scooters on pavements.
Istanbul sits in an active seismic zone. It is worth noting your accommodation's exits on arrival, though for a short visit no special action is needed beyond general awareness.

Take the commuter ferry to Kadikoy on the Asian side for lively markets and food away from the tourist core.
Wander the colourful streets of Balat with their old houses, antique shops and quiet cafes.
Watch the sunset from a rooftop or the Galata area as the call to prayer echoes across the skyline.

How many days should I spend in Istanbul?

Three to four days lets you cover the main Sultanahmet sights, a Bosphorus ferry and at least one non-touristy neighbourhood without rushing.

Do I need to bargain in the bazaars?

Yes, bargaining is expected in the Grand Bazaar and with many souvenir sellers. Start well below the asking price and be ready to walk away. Fixed shops and supermarkets do not bargain.

Is tap water safe to drink?

Locals generally avoid drinking the tap water and use bottled water, which is cheap and widely available. Tap water is fine for brushing teeth and washing.

What is the cheapest way from the airport to the centre?

The metro combined with the tram is the cheapest option using an IstanbulKart. The airport shuttle bus is a comfortable middle choice, and taxis are the most expensive.

Do I need to cover up to enter mosques?

Yes. Both men and women should dress modestly with covered shoulders and knees, and women should cover their hair. Mosques are free but close to visitors during prayer times.
