Munich's central square, framed by the ornate New Town Hall. Its Glockenspiel carillon performs with dancing figures daily at 11am (and noon and 5pm in season). Free to watch; arrive a few minutes early for a spot in the square.
The fairy-tale hilltop castle of King Ludwig II, about two hours south of Munich and doable as a long day trip by train or coach tour. Timed castle tickets sell out, so book online ahead; the priced band here is the castle admission only.

The S1 and S8 lines connect Munich Airport with the centre and Marienplatz in about 40 minutes, running every 10 to 20 minutes. The cheapest reliable link; the Airport-City-Day-Ticket is the best-value fare.
A coach runs between the airport and the Hauptbahnhof in around 45 minutes. Handy if you are staying near the station, though the S-Bahn is usually cheaper and unaffected by road traffic.
Licensed taxis charge a published fixed rate of about EUR 96 to the Hauptbahnhof. Best only for groups, late arrivals or heavy luggage; use the official rank and confirm the fixed fare.
Munich's clean, frequent underground reaches most sights and connects with the S-Bahn, trams and buses on one MVV ticket. Validate your ticket where required, as inspectors check without barriers.
An extensive tram and bus network complements the U-Bahn and reaches spots like Nymphenburg. All are covered by the same Zone M ticket, and trams are a scenic way to cross the centre.
