The UNESCO-listed old quarter of merchant houses, assembly halls, temples and lantern-hung lanes, best explored slowly on foot. A single combined ticket covers entry to a choice of the ticketed heritage buildings; wandering the streets themselves is free. Come at dusk when the lanterns light up and the riverfront comes alive.
The town's emblem, a small 18th-century covered bridge with a temple built into its span, once linking the Japanese and Chinese quarters. It was carefully restored in 2024. Crossing it is included in the Ancient Town ticket, and the exterior is free to photograph from the lane and riverbank.
A short evening paddle in a small wooden boat along the river as the Ancient Town glows, with the option to float a paper lantern on the water. Lovely and very popular, especially on the monthly full-moon lantern nights. Agree the price and boat size before stepping in.
The most popular of Hoi An's beaches, a broad stretch of sand about four kilometres from the old town with relaxed beach bars and seafood shacks. Free to enter; you pay only for a sunlounger or food and drink. An easy bicycle or Grab ride from the centre.

Tradition holds that authentic cao lau depends on water from the town's ancient Ba Le well and local ash-treated noodles.
Order it at a busy market stall rather than a tourist restaurant, and mix everything together well before eating so the herbs and crackling coat the noodles.

The name comes from their resemblance to small white roses; much of the town's supply is made by a single long-established family.
They are best fresh and warm; a plate makes a light starter, and the crispy fried wontons often served alongside complete the classic trio.
Fragrant rice cooked in chicken broth and turmeric, topped with shredded poached chicken, herbs, pickled onions and a tangy sauce, often with a small bowl of broth on the side. It is a beloved local one-plate meal, simple, cheap and deeply satisfying.
Look for a stall that is packed at lunchtime; the best versions are known by name to locals and sell out by mid-afternoon.

It sits somewhere between a soup and a salad.
Crush the rice cracker over the top and toss everything together; add chilli and a squeeze of lime to taste.

Hoi An's banh mi is among the most celebrated in the country, with one long-queued shop made famous by visiting chefs.
Join the queue at a renowned banh mi counter and eat it fresh; a warm, crackly baguette makes all the difference.

A Grab car from Da Nang International Airport to Hoi An is usually the cheapest door-to-door option, with the fare fixed in the app. The ride takes about 45 minutes; you will need mobile data or airport wifi to book and find your driver.
A metered or airport taxi from Da Nang to Hoi An costs a little more than Grab. Use a reputable company such as Mai Linh or Vinasun, make sure the meter runs, or agree a fixed price to the old town before you leave.
A private transfer booked through your hotel or a transfer company gives you a fixed price, a name board at arrivals and door-to-door service, which is convenient with luggage or after a long flight. Slightly dearer than Grab but hassle-free.
Flat, compact Hoi An is ideal for cycling, and many hotels lend bikes free or for a small daily fee. It is the nicest way to reach An Bang Beach and the surrounding rice paddies and villages, though motor traffic on the main roads calls for care.
A Grab motorbike is quick and cheap for short hops around town and out to the beach, with the fare set in the app and a helmet provided. Handy when it is too hot or too far to walk or cycle.
The Ancient Town is small, flat and largely closed to cars during the day and evening, so walking is the best way to see it. Wear comfortable shoes and expect crowds and slippery cobbles along the river after rain.
February to May is the sweet spot, with warm, dry, sunny days before the fierce summer heat sets in. June to August is very hot and humid but still dry, while September to December brings the rainy season and, in October and November, the Thu Bon River can flood and briefly submerge parts of the old town. Time your visit around a monthly full-moon lantern night if you can.
Hoi An has no airport of its own. Nearly everyone flies into Da Nang International Airport, about 30 kilometres and 45 minutes north, then continues by Grab car, taxi or a pre-booked private transfer. Da Nang's train station is the nearest rail link.
Two to three days let you enjoy the Ancient Town by day and by lantern light, spend time at the beach, order and collect tailoring, and take a half-day trip to the My Son ruins at a relaxed pace.
Walking the streets is free, but the official combined ticket (around 120,000 dong) is required to enter the ticketed heritage houses, assembly halls and the Japanese Bridge. Buy it from an official booth and keep the coupons.
Yes, it is famous for it, with hundreds of tailors who can make garments to measure in a day or two. Choose a well-reviewed shop, confirm the fabric and price in writing, and leave time for at least one fitting before you go.
The rainy season runs roughly September to December, and the Thu Bon River can flood low-lying parts of the old town in October and November. Travel is still possible, but check the forecast and be ready to adjust plans in those months.
