Lisbon is Portugal's capital, a warm, hilly city of pastel facades, patterned tiles and steep lanes tumbling down to the wide River Tagus. Built across seven hills, it rewards the effort of walking with sudden viewpoints, rattling old trams and the sound of fado drifting from the alleys of Alfama, the oldest quarter. Along the riverfront at Belem stand the great monuments of Portugal's age of discovery, and the same district gave the world the pastel de nata, the custard tart best eaten warm. The centre is compact but hilly, so trams, funiculars and the Metro help save your legs, and a day is easily lost wandering between miradouros, markets and tiled churches. Lisbon is relaxed, affordable by Western European standards and generous with sunshine, best enjoyed slowly with a coffee, a tart and a seat facing the water.
