The best times to visit São Paulo are the drier, milder shoulder months of autumn (April to May) and late winter to spring (August to October), when rain is less frequent and the city is comfortable for walking between museums and neighbourhoods. The summer months from December to March are hot and by far the wettest, with frequent heavy afternoon downpours, while the southern winter (June to August) is dry but can be grey and surprisingly cool. São Paulo's weather is famously changeable year-round, so pack a light layer and a compact umbrella whenever you come.
Pickpocketing, bag-snatching and phone theft are the main risks for visitors, on crowded streets, public transport and at outdoor tables. Carry only what you need, keep your phone out of sight on the street, wear no flashy jewellery or watches, and stay alert in crowds and at traffic lights.
São Paulo is a huge city where safety varies sharply by district and hour. The centre and areas like Luz can feel edgy, especially after dark; ask your accommodation which areas and times are fine, stick to busy well-lit streets, and use ride apps rather than walking between neighbourhoods at night.
After dark, favour booked ride apps over street taxis and over walking, keep to lively areas such as Paulista, Vila Madalena and the Jardins, and be especially mindful leaving bars and clubs. Set a low daily limit on your banking app and don't resist if you are ever robbed.
