Ikhtisar

Agra sits on the banks of the Yamuna River in northern India and is home to one of the world's most recognisable monuments, the Taj Mahal, built by Emperor Shah Jahan as a mausoleum for his wife Mumtaz Mahal. Beyond the famous white marble dome, the city holds a cluster of major Mughal-era sites, including the red…

Taj Mahal at sunrise

The definitive Agra experience: entering as the gates open to see the white marble mausoleum in the soft early light with the smallest crowds of the day. Buy tickets online in advance where possible to save time at the gate.

Agra Fort

A massive red sandstone Mughal fortress on the Yamuna River, with palaces, courtyards and a distant view of the Taj Mahal from its walls. Allow at least two hours to explore its main buildings.

Mehtab Bagh

A garden directly across the river from the Taj Mahal, offering a classic frontal view of the monument, especially beautiful at sunset. Quieter than the main complex and a good spot for photographs.

Itmad-ud-Daulah (the 'Baby Taj')

An intricately inlaid marble tomb often seen as a precursor in style to the Taj Mahal, but with far fewer visitors. A peaceful, worthwhile stop for anyone interested in Mughal architecture.

Taste it here

The must-try local dishes, sweets and fruits — including the exotic ones you won't find back home.

PethaSweetMuralikrishna m / Wikimedia Commons

Petha

A translucent, jelly-like sweet made from boiled and sugar-syrup-soaked ash gourd, said to have first been made for Shah Jahan's court. It comes in dozens of flavours from plain and saffron (kesar) to paan, and melts almost instantly in the mouth.

Panchi Petha is one of the most famous shops in the city to buy it fresh or boxed to take home.

Bedai and JalebiDishRavi Talwar / Wikimedia Commons

Bedai and Jalebi

Agra's classic breakfast pairing: a deep-fried, lentil-stuffed puffed bread served with spicy potato curry, eaten alongside hot, syrup-soaked jalebi for a sweet-and-savoury contrast. It is street food rather than restaurant fare, best found at a busy stall early in the morning.

Sadar Bazaar and Rawatpara are well known local spots for it.

DalmothDishGaurav Dhwaj Khadka / Wikimedia Commons

Dalmoth

A crunchy savoury snack mix of fried lentils, nuts and spices, sold loose by weight in the old city's shops and munched with evening tea. It travels well, making it a popular thing for visitors to take home as an edible souvenir.

Mughlai KebabsDishSrishti Gurung / Wikimedia Commons

Mughlai Kebabs

Agra was a Mughal capital, and its kitchens still turn out rich, slow-cooked kebabs, from minced seekh kebabs to marinated tikka, seasoned with Mughal-era spice blends. They are usually eaten with roomali roti or naan at the city's older Mughlai restaurants.

The lanes around Sadar Bazaar have several long-running Mughlai kitchens.

Mughlai ParathaDishSd Raihan / Wikimedia Commons

Mughlai Paratha

A flaky flatbread stuffed with spiced minced meat or egg, folded and pan-fried until crisp, a heartier cousin of the everyday paratha. It makes a filling street-food meal on its own, no side dishes required.

Cara kerjanya: Unofficial touts approach near the Taj Mahal ticket area or gates offering to guide you, sometimes claiming to be official staff, then demand a high fee or lead you toward a commission shop instead.

Cara menghindarinya: Only hire guides wearing an official ASI badge, ideally arranged in advance through your hotel. Politely but firmly decline unsolicited offers near the gates.

Complete your trip

The essentials most travellers book anyway — real providers for this destination.

Cara ke sana & berkeliling

Tarif sebenarnya, bukan harga turis.

Cara ke sana
Gatimaan Express train from Delhi 1,7 jUS$8–20

One of India's fastest trains, covering the Delhi to Agra route in under two hours. Book in advance, as popular departure times sell out, especially around weekends.

Flight to Agra 1 jUS$40–120

Limited flight connections exist to Agra's airport, generally at a higher cost than the train for a similar or longer overall travel time once airport transfers are included.

Private car or taxi from Delhi 3,5 jUS$40–70

A comfortable door-to-door option via the Yamuna Expressway, useful if combining Agra with other stops. Agree the full price, including waiting time, before departing.

Live directions & times in MapsReal routes from the airport or your spot — opens Google Maps
Berkeliling
Auto-rickshawUS$1–5

The most common way to get around Agra for visitors. Agree the fare before the ride starts, as meters are rarely used, and expect to negotiate.

Cycle-rickshawUS$1–2

A slower, low-cost option for short distances, especially useful in narrow lanes near the bazaars where motor vehicles cannot easily pass. Agree the fare first.

Electric rickshawUS$1–2

The only motorised option permitted in the restricted zone immediately around the Taj Mahal, covering the final stretch from parking areas to the gates. Fares are short and inexpensive.

Waktu terbaik untuk berkunjung

Januari–Maret dan Oktober–Desember

October to March brings cooler, drier weather that makes sightseeing and the Taj Mahal sunrise visit far more comfortable. April to June is extremely hot, and the July to September monsoon brings humidity and heavy rain, though the marble Taj Mahal itself can still be striking under a stormy sky.

Keamanan

Hati-hatiPersistent touts, unofficial guides and shop referrers operate around the main monuments, particularly near ticket counters and gates. A firm, polite decline and continuing to walk usually works better than engaging in conversation.
PeringatanSummer temperatures regularly exceed 40C with little shade around the monuments, and stone courtyards can feel even hotter underfoot. Visit early morning, carry water, wear a hat, and pace your sightseeing to avoid the midday peak.
Hati-hatiAgra's streets can be chaotic, with mixed traffic including rickshaws, motorbikes and pedestrians sharing narrow lanes with few crossings. Cross carefully, make eye contact with drivers where possible, and avoid rushing across busy roads.

Permata tersembunyi

Cross the river to Mehtab Bagh at sunset for a quiet, classic frontal view of the Taj Mahal without the main complex's crowds.
Visit the Itmad-ud-Daulah tomb for similarly stunning marble inlay work with a fraction of the visitors of the Taj Mahal itself.
Book the earliest possible entry slot for the Taj Mahal, since the light and the calm in the first half hour after opening are hard to match later in the day.

Pertanyaan yang sering diajukan

How many days do I need in Agra?

One full day covers the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort at a reasonable pace, while two days allow time to add Fatehpur Sikri, Itmad-ud-Daulah and Mehtab Bagh without rushing.

What is the best time of day to visit the Taj Mahal?

Sunrise, right as the gates open, offers the softest light, coolest temperatures and smallest crowds. Late afternoon is a reasonable second choice if an early start is not possible.

Is the Taj Mahal closed on any day?

It is closed to visitors on Fridays for prayers at the adjoining mosque, so plan your visit for another day of the week.

Do I need a guide at the Taj Mahal?

It is not required, but a licensed ASI-badge guide can add historical context. Hire one through your hotel or a recognised agency rather than accepting an unsolicited offer at the gate.

Is Agra safe for tourists?

Yes, in general, though persistent touts and commission-driven shopping stops are common around the main sights. Firm politeness, pre-booked transport and a little planning around tickets avoid most hassle.

Can Agra be visited as a day trip from Delhi?

Yes, the Gatimaan Express train makes a focused day trip possible, though an overnight stay allows a more relaxed pace and the option of a sunrise Taj Mahal visit without an early morning journey from Delhi.
