The striking striped cathedral above Amalfi's main square, reached by a grand staircase, with an Arab-Norman facade and the peaceful Cloister of Paradise. A small fee covers the cloister, crypt and museum. The steps and piazza below are the lively heart of Amalfi town.
The coast's most photographed village, a cascade of pastel houses, boutiques and stairways dropping to Spiaggia Grande beach. There is little to 'see' beyond wandering, shopping and swimming, but the setting is unforgettable. Wear good shoes, as almost everything is reached by steps.
A refined hilltop town famous for two gardens: Villa Rufolo, with its Moorish courtyard and terrace over the sea, and Villa Cimbrone, whose Terrace of Infinity is one of Italy's great viewpoints. Ravello also hosts a celebrated summer music festival. Reach it by bus up from Amalfi.
The coast's classic hike, a roughly 7-kilometre trail high above the sea from Bomerano (Agerola) to Nocelle above Positano, with sweeping views the whole way. Mostly downhill in this direction but with many steps at the end. Wear proper shoes, carry water and start early in summer.

It flavours everything here, from limoncello and cakes to salads and granita, and is the symbol of the region.
Try a chilled lemon granita or a slice of fresh lemon eaten with a little salt, a local summer refresher.

It is a signature of the whole coast and a favourite edible souvenir, sold in every shop and made by many families at home.
Keep it in the freezer and sip it very cold in small glasses; look for versions made with real sfusato lemons rather than flavourings.

Order one fresh from a good pasticceria with an espresso; it is best eaten the same day while the sponge is still moist.

Order it where the day's catch is fresh; a little chilli and a squeeze of lemon lift it, and skip the cheese, which is not used with seafood pasta.

A few drops transform a simple plate of spaghetti with garlic and oil into something deeply savoury.
Try spaghetti alla colatura in Cetara itself, and buy a small bottle to take home; a little goes a very long way.
Soft, milky buffalo mozzarella from the plains of Campania inland, served fresh and cool with tomatoes, olive oil and basil or simply on its own. On the coast it turns up in salads, on pizza and as a starter, at its best when eaten the day it is made.
Look for mozzarella di bufala campana DOP and eat it at room temperature rather than fridge-cold to taste it at its best.

The SITA Costiera bus from Sorrento winds along the cliff road to Positano and Amalfi, a cheap and scenic way in if you arrive by train to Sorrento. It can be slow and crowded in summer, so travel light and expect standing room in peak hours.
A common budget route is a train from Naples to Sorrento (Circumvesuviana) or to Salerno, then a SITA bus or a seasonal ferry along the coast. Cheaper than a private transfer and often more relaxing, though it means changing between services.
A pre-booked car from Naples airport or station takes you straight to your town in around 90 minutes, ideal with luggage or a late arrival. It is the most expensive option, so agree the full fixed price when you book.
The blue SITA buses are the backbone of local transport, linking all the coast towns cheaply. Buy and validate tickets before or on boarding, hold on for the tight bends, and check timetables, as services thin out in the evening and off-season.
From spring to autumn, ferries connect the main towns and give the finest views of the coast while avoiding road traffic. Fares are fixed at harbour kiosks. The trade-off is that boats are weather-dependent and largely stop running in winter.
Taxis and private drivers are handy for luggage, groups or late connections but are expensive and rarely metered on the coast. Always agree the fare before setting off, and use the bus or ferry for ordinary town-to-town trips.
Within the villages you walk everywhere, often up and down long staircases, and famous trails like the Path of the Gods link towns on foot. Wear sturdy shoes, and remember that reaching the sea often means a steep climb back up.
Late spring (May to June) and early autumn (September to October) are the sweet spot, with warm days, sea still or already good for swimming, and thinner crowds than midsummer. July and August are hot, very busy and pricey, with jammed roads and full beaches, while winter is quiet and mild but with many hotels, restaurants and ferries closed.
Three to four nights let you settle in one town, day-trip to Positano, Amalfi and Ravello by bus and ferry, and fit in a hike or a boat trip without rushing. A single day from Naples or Sorrento only scratches the surface.
For most visitors, no. The coast road is narrow and jammed in season, parking is scarce and expensive, and the buses and ferries reach everywhere. A car makes sense mainly off-season or for exploring inland, otherwise it is more stress than help.
Amalfi is central and well connected by bus and ferry, Positano is the most scenic but steep and pricey, and Ravello is quiet and high above the sea. Praiano and Minori are calmer, better-value bases still on the bus and boat routes.
May, June, September and early October offer warm weather, good swimming and lighter crowds. July and August are hottest and most crowded, and from November many hotels, restaurants and ferries close for the winter season.
It is one of Italy's pricier regions, especially in summer, for hotels, sea-view meals and beach clubs. You can keep costs down by using buses over taxis, eating a street back from the main squares, and travelling in the shoulder season.
