Watch out in Chiang Mai

'Temple is closed' tuk-tuk tourChiang Mai's temples keep normal daily hours. Walk to the entrance and check for yourself, and never accept a surprise cut-price city tour that includes 'shopping stops'.
Fake 'ethical' elephant campBook a genuinely no-riding, no-show sanctuary. Check recent independent reviews, look for rescue-and-observe programmes, and treat riding, tricks or bullhooks as a clear sign to book elsewhere.
Songthaew or tuk-tuk overchargeKnow the standard short-hop fare, agree the total price out loud before boarding, and refuse shopping detours. For a fixed, fair price use Grab instead.

Panoramica

Chiang Mai is the cultural capital of northern Thailand, a laid-back, temple-filled city ringed by forested mountains and set inside a moat-and-wall Old City that still traces its 700-year-old Lanna kingdom footprint. Life here is slower and cooler than Bangkok: monks cross quiet temple courtyards in the morning,…

Wat Phra That Doi Suthep

The golden mountain temple that is Chiang Mai's most sacred and iconic sight, high on Doi Suthep with sweeping views over the city. Climb the 306-step naga stairway or take the small funicular, and dress modestly with shoulders and knees covered. Go early to beat the tour buses and the haze.

Wat Phra Singh

The most revered temple inside the Old City, a beautiful Lanna-style complex housing the venerated Phra Singh Buddha image. Entry is by small donation, with a modest fee for the main hall. A calm, central stop that pairs well with the surrounding temples on foot.

Wat Chedi Luang

A massive, partly ruined 14th-century brick chedi at the heart of the Old City, once the tallest structure in the Lanna kingdom. A small ticket covers entry, and the grounds host a relaxed 'monk chat' where visitors can talk with resident monks.

Sunday Walking Street

Every Sunday evening the Old City's main street closes to traffic and fills with handicraft stalls, street food and live music, from Tha Phae Gate deep into the walls. Free to wander and the city's best market experience; go hungry and keep an eye on your bag in the crush.

Taste it here

The must-try local dishes, sweets and fruits — including the exotic ones you won't find back home.

Khao SoiDishTakeaway / Wikimedia Commons (CC BY-SA 4.0)

Khao Soi

The signature dish of northern Thailand: soft egg noodles in a rich, mildly spiced coconut curry broth, topped with crispy fried noodles and served with chicken or beef, pickled mustard greens, shallots and lime. It reflects the Burmese and Yunnanese influences on Lanna cooking and is done better in Chiang Mai than anywhere else.

Squeeze in the lime and stir the pickled greens through before eating, and look for a busy local shop rather than a tourist restaurant for the best bowl.

Sai Ua (Northern Thai Sausage)DishAndy Li / Wikimedia Commons (CC0)

Sai Ua (Northern Thai Sausage)

A grilled pork sausage packed with lemongrass, kaffir lime leaf, galangal, chili and turmeric, giving it a fragrant, herby punch quite unlike a Western sausage. It is a Chiang Mai market staple, sold in coils by weight and eaten with sticky rice.

Buy it fresh off the grill at a market stall by the coil, and pair it with a ball of sticky rice and a chili dip for the full northern snack.

Nam Prik NumDishTakeaway / Wikimedia Commons (CC BY-SA 3.0)

Nam Prik Num

A classic Lanna dip of roasted green chilies, garlic, shallots and lime pounded into a smoky, spicy paste, eaten with sticky rice, steamed vegetables and crispy pork rind. It is a cornerstone of a northern shared meal and a good window into everyday home cooking.

Scoop it up with sticky rice and raw or steamed vegetables rather than eating it alone; the heat varies, so try a little first.

Mango Sticky RiceSweetArthur Taksin / Wikimedia Commons (CC BY 4.0)

Mango Sticky Rice

Ripe sweet mango served with warm glutinous rice soaked in coconut milk, Thailand's most loved dessert and widely sold across Chiang Mai's markets. It is at its best when mangoes are in season, roughly March to June.

Buy it from a dedicated dessert stall at a market for the freshest mango and the best coconut-to-rice balance.

Cha Yen (Thai Iced Tea)DrinkTakeaway / Wikimedia Commons (CC BY-SA 3.0)

Cha Yen (Thai Iced Tea)

The bright-orange Thai iced tea, strongly brewed black tea sweetened with sugar and condensed milk and poured over ice, sold from carts and cafes all over the city. Sweet, creamy and cooling, it is the classic drink to carry around the markets and temples.

Ask for it less sweet ('wan noi') if you find the standard version too sugary, and grab it from a busy cart for the freshest brew.

Songthaew or tuk-tuk overcharge

Come funziona: A driver quotes a flat 'tourist' fare several times the normal rate, or names a low price and then makes forced stops at shops for a commission, or claims your fare was per person.

Come evitarla: Know the standard short-hop fare, agree the total price out loud before boarding, and refuse shopping detours. For a fixed, fair price use Grab instead.

The fastest way in, around 75-80 minutes from either Bangkok airport, with frequent budget and full-service flights. Often barely more than the train once you value the time saved.

Overnight train from Bangkok 12 h20-55 USD

The scenic classic: a roughly 12-hour sleeper from Bangkok, best booked in a second-class air-conditioned sleeper berth well ahead. Slower than flying but a comfortable, memorable journey.

Bus from Bangkok 10 h15-35 USD

Frequent VIP and express coaches make the roughly 10-hour run for the lowest fare. Overnight services save a night's accommodation; choose a reputable company for comfort and safety.

Red songthaew1-2 USD

The shared red trucks are Chiang Mai's cheap workhorse, flagged down anywhere and shared with others heading the same way. Tell the driver your destination and pay the flat local fare on arrival.

Grab2-8 USD

The ride-hailing app gives a fixed, fair price with no haggling, useful for the airport, longer trips or late at night. Cars and, in places, motorbike taxis are available in the app.

Rented scooter5-10 USD

A cheap, flexible way to explore the city and nearby hills if you are a confident rider with the correct licence. Wear a helmet, ride carefully in traffic, and rent only from a reputable shop with clear paperwork.

Miglior periodo per visitare

gennaio–febbraio e novembre–dicembre

The cool, dry season from November to February is by far the best time to visit, with warm days, cool evenings and clear mountain air. March to April is the burning season, when agricultural fires blanket the valley in smoke and air quality can turn genuinely unhealthy, so it is best avoided if you can. The June-to-October rainy season is green and quiet with short, heavy downpours, and the Yi Peng and Loy Krathong lantern festivals light up the city in November.

Sicurezza

AttenzioneFrom roughly late February through April, crop-burning fills the Chiang Mai valley with haze and air quality can reach unhealthy levels. If you visit then, check a live air-quality index, keep an N95 mask handy, limit strenuous outdoor activity on bad days, and take special care if you have asthma or a respiratory condition.
AttenzioneRented scooters are a leading cause of tourist injuries in northern Thailand. Only ride if you are licensed and experienced, always wear a helmet, avoid riding at night or after drinking, and watch for gravel and sharp bends on the mountain roads to Doi Suthep and beyond.
AttenzioneDays are hot for much of the year and temple-hopping means time in the sun. Carry water, wear sunscreen and a hat, and pace yourself, especially on the long stairway and grounds at Doi Suthep.

Gemme nascoste

Come on a Sunday so you can walk the Old City's Sunday Walking Street, the best and most atmospheric market in the city.
Ride up to Doi Suthep early in the morning for cooler air, softer light and the valley view before the tour buses and midday haze arrive.
Skip the tourist restaurants for a busy local khao soi shop at lunchtime, where the northern curry noodle is cheapest and at its best.

Domande frequenti

How many days should I spend in Chiang Mai?

Three to four days lets you cover the Old City temples, a trip up to Doi Suthep, a cooking class or elephant sanctuary day, and an evening market at a relaxed pace. Add more if you want to trek, visit hill-tribe villages or day-trip to the mountains.

When is the burning season and should I avoid it?

Roughly late February to April, when agricultural fires cause heavy smoke haze and poor air quality across the valley. If you have a choice, visit between November and February instead; if you go in the burning season, monitor the air-quality index and carry a mask.

How do I choose an ethical elephant sanctuary?

Pick a genuine no-riding, no-show sanctuary focused on rescue and observation, where you feed and walk beside the elephants rather than ride them. Check recent independent reviews and avoid anywhere offering saddles, tricks or chained animals.

What is the best way to get around?

Walk inside the compact Old City, and use the cheap shared red songthaews or a Grab for anywhere further out, including the airport. Rent a scooter only if you are a confident, licensed rider.

What food is Chiang Mai famous for?

Northern Lanna cuisine, above all khao soi, a rich coconut-curry noodle soup topped with crispy noodles. Try also sai ua (northern herb sausage) and nam prik num (a roasted green-chili dip), all best at local shops and markets.
