개요

Al Khobar is the most relaxed and cosmopolitan of the Eastern Province's three linked cities, sitting on the Arabian Gulf beside Dammam and Dhahran. Once a small pearling and fishing village, it grew with the oil industry into a modern, low-rise waterfront city with a long, green corniche that is its beating heart.…

The must-try local dishes, sweets and fruits — including the exotic ones you won't find back home.

KabsaDishBasel15 / Wikimedia Commons (public domain)

Kabsa

Saudi Arabia's signature rice dish and a staple across the Eastern Province: long-grain rice cooked with chicken or lamb, tomato, dried lime (loomi) and a warm blend of spices, often topped with fried nuts and raisins. It is the everyday centrepiece of family lunches and generous restaurant platters.

Portions are large and made for sharing; order one plate between two and add a fresh salad and yoghurt on the side.

Balaleet

A beloved Khaleeji breakfast dish of sweet vermicelli flavoured with cardamom, saffron and rose water, topped with a thin savoury omelette so each bite is both sweet and savoury. It is a classic Eastern Province morning treat, eaten at home and at heritage breakfast spots.

Look for it at traditional Khaleeji breakfast places, busiest on Fridays, and pair it with Arabic coffee and dates.

Dish

Jareesh

A comforting dish of coarsely crushed wheat slow-cooked with yoghurt or broth and often chicken or lamb until thick and creamy, sometimes finished with caramelised onion. Nourishing and homely rather than showy, it is a favourite at family and holiday tables across central and eastern Arabia.

Dates

Dates are woven into daily life and hospitality, and the nearby Al-Ahsa oasis is one of the world's great date-growing regions with millions of palms. Served with Arabic coffee to welcome guests, they range from soft and syrupy to firm, in dozens of prized varieties.

Try a few varieties fresh from a specialist date shop or the Al-Ahsa market, and buy a mixed box as an easy, authentic gift to take home.

Arabic coffee (qahwa)DrinkBluehillies / Wikimedia Commons (CC0)

Arabic coffee (qahwa)

Light, cardamom-scented coffee poured from a long-spouted dallah into small handleless cups, a central symbol of Saudi hospitality served with dates at almost any welcome. It is unsweetened and delicate rather than strong and dark, meant to be sipped slowly in company.

Three small cups is the polite standard; gently shake the empty cup side to side when you have had enough to signal you are finished.

Unlicensed taxi touts at the airport

수법: Drivers cluster near the arrivals exit calling out 'taxi' or even 'Uber, Careem' while holding a phone, then charge far above the normal fare, especially late at night when official options are thin.

피하는 법: Only take a taxi from the official rank or desk, or book through the Uber or Careem app and match the plate and driver. Never follow someone offering a ride inside the terminal, and agree or confirm the price before you get in.

Book everything — at the honest price

Trzly compares across the big providers and points you to the cheapest. We don't take your booking or hold your money — we send you straight to the source, name the price, and warn you about scams.

How Trzly ranks

Cheapest for you first — never by commission. When booking direct is cheaper, we say so, even when we earn nothing. Rank order is a function of price and trust only.

Insider tricks for the lowest price

Real tactics that actually save you money — we surface them, not just talk.

  • Always pay in the local currency — decline "pay in your currency" (DCC) to save 3–7%.
  • Open in a private window and clear cookies — some sites raise the price on repeat visits.
  • A transit/layover flight is usually cheaper than a direct one — worth the stop.
  • Book flights on Tuesday/Wednesday; avoid Friday and Sunday.
  • Book hotels direct on their own site — the member rate often beats the middlemen.
  • Ask for the "app-only rate" — often hidden from the public price.
  • Free cancellation? Book now and re-book if the price drops later.
  • Buy attraction tickets on the official site, not a reseller — no service fee.
  • A local eSIM instead of roaming — up to 90% cheaper.
  • Set a price alert and watch for the drop before high season.

가는 길과 현지 이동

관광객 가격이 아닌 실제 요금.

가는 길
Ride-hailing from the airport 40분US$17~30

Uber and Careem operate at King Fahd International Airport and are usually the clearest option, with the fare fixed in the app. Availability can be patchy late at night and prices surge when several flights land together, so allow some flexibility.

Airport taxi 35분US$20~37

Official airport taxis wait at the rank outside arrivals and are convenient with luggage or on late arrivals. The airport is far from the cities, so the ride is longer and pricier than a typical city trip. Confirm the fare or meter before setting off.

Rental car 35분US$27~55

The Eastern Province is spread out and car-friendly, and a rental gives the most freedom for Half Moon Bay, Al-Ahsa and the causeway. Roads are wide and modern, fuel is cheap, and driving is on the right, though traffic can be fast and assertive.

현지 이동
Uber and CareemUS$3~9

Ride-hailing apps are the default way to move around Khobar, Dammam and Dhahran, fixing the fare in advance and tracking the route. Coverage and prices are good, making them the easiest way to avoid any fare dispute.

Street taxiUS$4~11

Older street taxis can be flagged down but often lack a working meter and may overcharge visitors. If you use one, agree the price first; for most trips a booking app is cheaper, clearer and easier.

Walking the corniche

The corniche and central Khobar are pleasant on foot in the cool of the evening, but the city is spread out and summer daytime heat makes long walks between districts unrealistic. Use apps or a car to move between areas.

방문하기 좋은 시기

1월–3월 및 11월–12월

November to March is by far the best time, with warm, dry days, cool evenings and comfortable weather for the corniche, beaches and outdoor sights. Spring and autumn shoulders are workable but warming, while May to September brings extreme heat and high humidity that pushes almost all activity indoors or to after dark.

안전

주의Summer in the Eastern Province is genuinely extreme, with temperatures often above 45 degrees Celsius and heavy Gulf humidity that makes it feel hotter. From late spring to early autumn, stay hydrated, avoid the midday sun, use air-conditioned malls and museums, and save the corniche and beaches for the evening.
주의Saudi Arabia is welcoming to visitors but socially conservative. Modest clothing that covers shoulders and knees is respectful for everyone, women no longer need an abaya but should dress modestly, public displays of affection are best avoided, and it is courteous to be discreet around prayer times when some shops briefly close.
주의Getting around means a lot of car travel on fast, wide roads where driving can be assertive and pedestrian crossings are limited. Take care as a pedestrian, use marked crossings, wear seatbelts, and if you drive, watch for sudden lane changes and high speeds on the highways between the cities.

숨은 명소

Time an evening on the corniche for sunset over the Gulf, then join local families buying grilled corn, fresh juice and Arabic coffee from the kiosks along the promenade.
Dive into Khobar's specialty-coffee scene, seeking out an independent roaster on or near Prince Faisal bin Fahd Street where the baristas take the craft seriously.
Go to Ithra in Dhahran for a free evening of galleries and architecture, and check its programme for concerts, films and exhibitions that draw people from across the region.

자주 묻는 질문

How many days do I need in Al Khobar?

Two days cover the corniche, Ithra, Scitech and a good seafood dinner at a relaxed pace. Add a third day for Half Moon Bay or a day trip to the Al-Ahsa oasis, or as a base while exploring the wider Eastern Province.

Can I cross to Bahrain from Khobar?

Yes, the King Fahd Causeway links Al Khobar directly to Bahrain by car in under an hour outside of queues. You need a valid Bahrain visa or entry eligibility, vehicle insurance and papers, and you pay a causeway toll each way; weekend border queues can be long.

Is Al Khobar safe for tourists?

Yes, Khobar is very safe and serious crime against visitors is rare, with locals known for hospitality. The main things to manage are the extreme summer heat, agreeing fair taxi fares or using apps, and dressing with local modesty in mind.

What is the best way to get around?

Ride-hailing apps like Uber and Careem are the easiest and clearest way to move around Khobar, Dammam and Dhahran, with fixed fares. A rental car is worth it if you plan beach trips, Al-Ahsa or the causeway, as the region is spread out and car-friendly.

When should I visit?

Aim for November to March, when the weather is warm and pleasant for the corniche and beaches. Avoid the May to September summer if you can, as extreme heat and humidity make daytime outdoor activity difficult and push everything indoors or to the evening.
