The best time to visit Bangkok is the cool, dry season from November to February, when temperatures and humidity ease, rain is rare and the skies are clearest — this is also the peak tourist season, so prices and crowds are highest. March to May is the hot season, when Bangkok becomes intensely hot and humid and the air quality can dip. The rainy season from roughly June to October brings heavy afternoon downpours and occasional flooding, but the rain usually falls in short bursts, the city is greener and cheaper, and you can still travel comfortably around the showers. Whatever the season, expect heat and humidity and plan the hottest hours around air-conditioned malls, temples and river breezes.
Bangkok is hot and humid year-round and the midday heat can be draining, so pace yourself, drink plenty of bottled water, wear light clothing and a hat, and use air-conditioned malls, temples and the Skytrain to cool off. During the hot and dry months air pollution can also rise, so those with breathing issues should check air-quality readings.
Traffic is heavy and chaotic and crossing the road is the most real everyday risk — cars, motorbikes and tuk-tuks come from all directions and do not always stop. Cross at lights or footbridges, watch for motorbikes on pavements, and if you ride a motorbike taxi always wear the helmet.
Bangkok is generally safe and violent crime against tourists is rare, but petty theft, bag-snatching from motorbikes and pickpocketing happen in crowded markets, nightlife areas and on busy transport. Keep your phone and wallet secure, carry your bag on the side away from the road, and use a hotel safe for your passport.
