A 16th-century Mamluk fortress by the waterfront, later a khan for pilgrims heading to Mecca and a landmark of the WWI Arab Revolt. Small and quick to visit, with the adjacent Great Arab Revolt flagpole and museum nearby. Entry is a token fee and is covered by the Jordan Pass.
The excavated remains of one of the earliest planned Islamic cities, founded in the 7th century, with visible walls, gates and streets right in the modern town near the corniche. Free and open to wander; a short, atmospheric stop that puts Aqaba's long history in context.

As Jordan's only coastal city, Aqaba is the place to eat it at its best.
Order it at a seafront restaurant that cooks to order, and ask which fish is freshest that day; it is worth the wait over a pre-made batch.

Fish is usually sold by weight, so you pick your fish and it is cooked whole. It is the everyday taste of Aqaba's Red Sea.

Light, cardamom-scented coffee served in small handleless cups, a symbol of Jordanian hospitality poured for guests and at gatherings. Sweet black tea with mint or sage is its everyday companion, sipped for hours in seafront cafes and souk coffee houses alike.
If someone offers you Arabic coffee, accepting a cup is a warm gesture; gently swirl the cup when you have had enough to signal you are finished.

King Hussein International sits just north of town, a 10 to 15 minute ride away. Official taxis wait outside arrivals and charge a short fixed fare; confirm the price first. The airport is small, so taxis can be scarce on late or infrequent flights.
The comfortable JETT coach links Amman with Aqaba in roughly four to five hours and is the main overland option, with a handful of daily departures. Book ahead in high season. Cheaper public buses and shared taxis also run but are slower and less predictable.
Where available, apps like Uber and Careem can be cheaper and clearer than an airport taxi, with the fare fixed in the app. Coverage in Aqaba is thinner than in Amman, so a driver may take longer to arrive; you will need local data or airport wifi.
Metered yellow taxis are plentiful and cheap around Aqaba's compact centre and out to the south beaches. Always ask for the meter; if the driver refuses, take another. Carry small change, as drivers rarely have much.
Ride-hailing apps work in Aqaba and fix the fare in advance, which makes them an easy way to avoid fare disputes and reach the beaches or dive centres. Availability is more limited than in the capital, so allow extra waiting time.
The town centre, souk, fort and seafront promenade are flat and easily walkable, unlike hilly Amman. It is a pleasant stroll in the cooler morning and evening, though the summer midday sun makes a short taxi hop worthwhile.
Aqaba is a warm-weather, year-round destination, but spring (March to May) and autumn to early winter (October to December) are the most comfortable, with warm days, pleasant sea temperatures and excellent diving visibility. Winter is mild and sunny, making it a popular escape when the rest of the region is cold, while high summer (June to August) is very hot, with daytime temperatures that can be draining for sightseeing.
Two days is enough to dive or snorkel, see the fort, Ayla and the souk, and enjoy a couple of beach afternoons. Add a day or two if you want to use Aqaba as a base for Wadi Rum and Petra, which are both within easy reach.
