Tourist scams in New Zealand — and how to avoid them
These are the tourist scams Trzly has documented across New Zealand, grouped by destination. Each one is real, with a clear way to stay safe. Read before you land.
Cara ia berfungsi: Some Auckland taxis, especially targeting tired arrivals at the airport or tourists near the CBD, take longer routes, run inflated meters or apply surprise surcharges. In one reported case a driver charged tourists NZ$163 for a trip of under 10 kilometres.
Cara mengelakkannya: Use a well-known taxi company from the official rank or a rideshare app so the route and fare are tracked, check the estimated cost on your phone map first, and never accept a ride from someone approaching you inside the terminal.
Unlicensed taxi and 'transfer' touts
Cara ia berfungsi: At the airport and around busy tourist spots, unofficial drivers sometimes approach travellers offering a ride or a 'cheap transfer', then charge far more than a proper metered fare or a legitimate shuttle.
Cara mengelakkannya: Ignore anyone touting for rides inside the terminal. Licensed taxis wait at the marked rank outside, rideshare has its own signed pickup zone, and shuttles are booked at official desks — use those and nothing else.
Overpriced waterfront dining
Cara ia berfungsi: Restaurants on the most tourist-facing strips, such as parts of the Viaduct Harbour, Princes Wharf and around the base of the Sky Tower, can charge premium prices for average food, relying on the view and passing foot traffic.
Cara mengelakkannya: Walk a street or two back from the water, check the menu and prices before sitting down, and seek out where locals actually eat — the same money buys much better food a short walk inland.
The dropped-camera photo scam
Cara ia berfungsi: A friendly stranger asks you to take their photo, then deliberately fumbles or drops the camera or phone and blames you for breaking it, demanding money on the spot.
Cara mengelakkannya: You are never obliged to pay. If someone hands you their device and it 'breaks', calmly decline any payment, walk to a public area, and report persistent harassment to a nearby officer or your accommodation.
Street games and pickpocketing
Cara ia berfungsi: Very occasionally in crowded pedestrian areas, a group runs a street game or guessing trick to draw a crowd while accomplices pick pockets and bags in the distraction.
Cara mengelakkannya: Auckland has little street crime, but treat any impromptu street game as a distraction, keep your phone and wallet secured in a front pocket or zipped bag, and don't stop to play.
