The lively main square on the waterfront, dominated by the ornate 1901 clock tower that is the emblem of Izmir. Free to enjoy and always busy with locals and pigeons, it sits beside the small tiled Konak Mosque and the ferry pier, and is the natural starting point for exploring the city on foot.
A long, grassy waterfront promenade in Alsancak lined with cafes, restaurants and old mansions, best in the late afternoon and evening. Locals walk, cycle and sit on the grass with tea to watch the sunset over the bay. Horse carriages and bike lanes run its length; it is free and the essence of Izmir life.
One of Turkey's largest historic markets, a maze of thousands of shops selling spices, textiles, jewellery, food and souvenirs, threaded with hidden courtyards, old mosques and coffee houses. Wander without a map, stop for a coffee in a shaded han, and haggle politely where prices are not marked. Come hungry.
The Roman-era commercial agora of ancient Smyrna, rebuilt after a 2nd-century earthquake, with colonnades, arched vaults and Corinthian columns right in the modern centre. A modest entry fee and about an hour give a quiet break from the surrounding bazaar streets. Wear sun protection as there is little shade.

Plain is the classic, but you will also find versions with cheese, spinach or tahini. It carries an official Turkish geographical-indication label as an Izmir specialty.
Buy it fresh and warm from a dedicated boyozcu in the morning; the best batches sell out early.

The classic city version is filled with cheese, tomato and cured sausage, while beach towns like Cesme make a bigger grilled sausage-and-cheese take. It is hearty, cheap and everywhere.
Order it toasted and eat it hot; it is a filling snack or a light meal on its own.
Izmir's version of the sesame bread ring known elsewhere in Turkey as simit, but dipped in hot grape molasses and briefly fried before being coated in sesame and baked, giving it a distinct flavour and crunch. Sold from carts and stalls across the city, it is the everyday breakfast on the move and won its own geographical indication in 2021.
Have it fresh in the morning with white cheese and tea, the way locals do, and eat it the same day while it is still crisp.

In Izmir and the Aegean, hot lokma is also handed out free in the street as 'hayir lokmasi', a charitable offering in memory of loved ones.

The IZBAN suburban rail line has a stop inside Adnan Menderes Airport and reaches the centre and Alsancak in about 30 minutes. Cheap, frequent and comfortable, it is the best-value airport link. Buy an Izmirimkart card to tap in and out.
Havas shuttle coaches connect the airport with central stops such as Alsancak. A comfortable middle option, dearer than the train but far cheaper than a taxi, though slower when traffic is heavy.
Taxis wait at the official rank outside arrivals and are handy with luggage or late at night. The most expensive way in; insist on the meter or agree the fare first, and avoid drivers who approach you inside the terminal.
Izmir has a clean metro line and the IZBAN commuter rail that together link the centre, Konak, Alsancak and the suburbs. Use an Izmirimkart travel card, which also works on buses and ferries, and tap on entry.
Passenger ferries cross Izmir's bay between piers like Konak, Karsiyaka and Alsancak, a cheap, scenic and breezy way to travel and a lovely short trip at sunset. The same Izmirimkart card pays the fare.
Metered yellow taxis are plentiful and cheap for the hills and longer hops. Always ask for the meter and keep small cash. Ride-hailing apps that dispatch licensed taxis make fares clearer and easier.
The core between Konak, the Kordon and Kemeralti is flat and very walkable, best explored slowly on foot. Comfortable shoes help, and a ferry or taxi saves you when the sun is high or the hills are steep.
Spring (April to May) and autumn (September to October) are the most pleasant, with warm, sunny days, cooler evenings and thinner crowds, ideal for the city and for day trips to Ephesus. Summer from June to August is hot and dry, often around the mid-30s Celsius, though the sea breeze softens the evenings on the Kordon. Winter is mild but the wettest season, with grey, rainy spells and quieter streets.
Two days cover Konak Square, the Kordon, Kemeralti, the Agora and a sunset viewpoint at an easy pace. Add a third or fourth day to use Izmir as a base for Ephesus, the old Greek town of Alacati and Cesme, or the ruins at Pergamon.
Yes. Ephesus, near Selcuk, is about an hour south and reachable by the IZBAN train with a short onward connection, by organised tour or by car. Many people visit it as an easy day trip from Izmir and return the same evening.
The IZBAN suburban train has a station inside the airport and runs to the centre and Alsancak in about half an hour for a very low fare. The Havas bus is a comfortable middle option, while taxis are convenient with luggage but the most expensive.
Izmir is generally safe, relaxed and used to visitors, and serious crime against tourists is uncommon. The main things to manage are the summer heat, taxi drivers avoiding the meter and normal big-city care with belongings in crowds and after dark.
Izmir has its own street-food culture, including flaky boyoz pastries and sesame gevrek rings for breakfast, the meaty kumru sandwich, syrup-soaked lokma and stuffed mussels sold by the piece, plus excellent Aegean seafood and mezes along the waterfront.
