The UNESCO-listed old town is a dense grid of pastel shophouses, clan temples, colonial landmarks and cafes, best explored slowly on foot. Follow the marked heritage trail past Armenian Street and the Khoo Kongsi clan house, and duck into side lanes for the best food. Come early or late to avoid the midday heat.
George Town is dotted with witty wall murals and wrought-iron caricatures, sparked by artist Ernest Zacharevic's 2012 works like the 'Children on a Bicycle'. Hunting them down is a free, fun way to explore the back lanes. Pick up a mural map or follow the crowds, and expect a short queue for photos at the famous ones.
A cool, forested hill station high above the city, reached in minutes by a historic funicular railway. The summit offers sweeping views over George Town and the strait, plus cafes, a canopy walk and the Habitat nature trail. Go on a clear morning, and consider the fast-lane ticket to skip long queues at weekends.
Malaysia's largest Buddhist temple, a sprawling hillside complex at Air Itam with a seven-storey pagoda and a giant bronze statue of the Goddess of Mercy reached by a short inclined lift. Entry is free with small charges for the pagoda and lift. It is especially magical when lit up during Chinese New Year.

Seek out a stall using a charcoal flame and cooking each plate to order, and go before late morning, as popular stalls often sell out by lunch.

It is darker and pricklier than the fried Hokkien mee found further south.
Stir in the chilli paste to taste, and pair it with the little side of extra prawns or pork ribs some stalls offer for a heartier bowl.

Ride-hailing with Grab is the simplest way from Penang International Airport into George Town, roughly 16 to 17 kilometres north. The fare is fixed in the app and usually cheaper than the coupon taxi. Order from the marked pickup point, not from a tout.
Rapid Penang buses, including the 401E, link the airport with George Town for a very low flat fare. It is by far the cheapest option but slow, with several stops, so it suits budget travellers with light luggage and time to spare.
Official airport taxis charge a fixed coupon fare by zone, paid at the counter in arrivals. Convenient with luggage or on late arrivals, and priced upfront, though it costs more than Grab. Avoid limousine touts inside the terminal.
Grab is the dominant way to get around Penang, with good coverage, transparent app pricing and no meter disputes. It is often the only easy option late at night when buses stop. Pay only the app fare, even if a driver asks for extra.
The public bus network covers George Town and the island cheaply, including the free central-area shuttle in the old town. Buses are slower and can be infrequent, but they are excellent value for longer trips out to beaches, temples and the airport.
The historic passenger ferry crosses the channel between George Town and Butterworth on the mainland, near the train station, for a token fare. It is more of a scenic experience than a necessity now that the bridges carry most traffic, but the harbour views are lovely.
The heritage old town is compact and best explored on foot, moving between shophouses, murals, temples and food stalls. Streets are flat but the heat and humidity are strong, so carry water, use shade and pause in air-conditioned cafes.
Penang is warm and humid all year, but the drier, sunnier months from around December to March are the most comfortable for exploring, and coincide with the colourful Chinese New Year celebrations. The wettest period is usually around September and October, when heavy afternoon downpours are common, though they often pass quickly. There is no cold season, so pack light, breathable clothing and sun protection whenever you visit.
Two to three days let you cover George Town's heritage streets and murals, eat your way through the hawker scene, and add Penang Hill and Kek Lok Si Temple at a relaxed pace. Add more time for beaches at Batu Ferringhi or day trips inland.
Food is the main event for many visitors, and George Town is often called Malaysia's food capital, but there is also rich heritage, temples, colonial history, street art, a hill station and beaches. It is easy to combine great eating with plenty of sightseeing.
Grab ride-hailing is the easiest and clearest option, with fares fixed in the app. The old town is very walkable, cheap Rapid Penang buses reach the wider island, and taxis exist but often avoid the meter, so most visitors stick to Grab.
Yes, Penang is generally safe and welcoming, with low levels of serious crime against visitors. The main issues are petty annoyances like taxi drivers avoiding the meter and occasional overcharging, plus the tropical heat and busy traffic, all easily managed with a little care.
The drier, sunnier months from about December to March are the most comfortable and popular. September and October tend to be the wettest, with heavy but often short downpours. It is warm and humid all year, so there is no truly bad time to go.
