Vienna's landmark Gothic cathedral in the very centre of the old town, with its patterned tiled roof and towering south spire. The main nave is free to glimpse; separate tickets cover the towers, catacombs and treasury. Climb the south tower's 343 steps or take the lift up the north tower for city views.
The Habsburgs' vast summer palace, with opulent state rooms, formal gardens, the Gloriette viewpoint and one of the world's oldest zoos. Book a timed Grand Tour online in advance, as same-day tickets often sell out. Allow half a day and take tram or U-Bahn out to the western edge of the city.
A baroque palace complex housing Austria's national art collection, most famously Gustav Klimt's golden painting The Kiss. The Upper Belvedere holds the main galleries; the gardens between the two palaces are free to stroll. Book ahead for the busy Klimt rooms.
The sprawling former imperial palace in the centre, now home to the Imperial Apartments, the Sisi Museum devoted to Empress Elisabeth, and the Silver Collection. One combined ticket covers all three. The same complex holds the Spanish Riding School and the National Library's grand hall.

It is served simply with a lemon wedge and potato salad or parsley potatoes, never a sauce. If made with pork it must be called Schnitzel Wiener Art rather than the real thing.
For the genuine article ask for veal (vom Kalb); it costs more than pork but is the authentic Wiener Schnitzel, and the crumb should be dry and crisp, not greasy.

The tender sliced beef is served with the broth, roast or hash-brown potatoes, creamed spinach and the essential apple-horseradish and chive sauces.
It is a leisurely, old-Vienna dish best enjoyed at a classic restaurant; spoon a little of each sauce onto the beef rather than drowning it.

Try it with a Melange to balance the sweetness; the unsweetened cream on the side is part of the experience, not an optional extra.

Eat it fresh and warm; some coffee houses let you watch the dough being pulled by hand, which is worth timing your visit for.

It belongs to the city's UNESCO-listed coffee-house culture, where you can sit undisturbed for hours over a single cup.
Order a Melange rather than a generic 'coffee', and take your time; lingering over the cup with a newspaper is the whole point, not overstaying.
A juicy smoked pork sausage studded with pockets of melting cheese, a beloved late-night and on-the-go snack from Vienna's Würstelstand sausage stands. It is typically served with a bread roll, sweet or hot mustard and a squirt of ketchup, and nicknamed 'Eitrige' in local slang.

The best-value airport link. The ÖBB Railjet reaches Wien Hauptbahnhof in about 15 minutes and the S7 suburban train runs to Wien Mitte and Praterstern, both for a few euros, with a city ticket covering onward U-Bahn and tram.
A non-stop express to Wien Mitte in 16 minutes, comfortable but around three times the price of the ordinary train for the same time. Convenient if you value the direct run, though most travellers do fine on the cheaper Railjet or S7.
Taxis and prebooked transfers run from the airport to the centre in around 30 minutes, useful with luggage or late at night. Prebook a fixed price or agree the fare first, as rank quotes can be high compared with the train.
Vienna's clean, frequent metro has five lines that reach most sights and run late at weekends. The fastest way across the city. Buy and validate a ticket before boarding; inspectors do check and fine fare-dodgers.
An extensive tram network circles the Ringstrasse and threads the districts, scenic and useful where the U-Bahn does not reach, with buses filling the gaps. The same tickets and passes apply across all Wiener Linien services.
The old town inside the Ring is compact, flat and made for walking, with the cathedral, Hofburg and main squares all close together. Comfortable shoes and a little time are all you need to enjoy it.
Spring (April to June) and early autumn (September to October) are the most pleasant, with mild days, blooming or golden parks and lighter crowds than midsummer. July and August are warm and busy, while winter is cold and often grey but magical in December, when the Christmas markets and Advent lights fill the squares. Book well ahead for the festive season and for New Year concerts.
Three days let you cover the old town, St. Stephen's, the Hofburg, one or two major museums, the Belvedere and a half day at Schönbrunn at a relaxed pace, with time for the coffee houses. Add a day for the Prater, more galleries or a day trip.
The S7 suburban train and the ÖBB Railjet both reach the city for only a few euros and take around 15 to 20 minutes, far cheaper than the City Airport Train or a taxi. A single city ticket then covers your onward U-Bahn or tram.
Yes, Vienna is one of Europe's safest capitals with low violent crime. The main issues are minor: pickpockets in crowds, fake charity petitions near the canal, costumed concert-ticket sellers and the odd overpriced airport taxi, all easily managed with a little awareness.
Yes for Schönbrunn, which uses timed entry and regularly sells out same-day, and it is wise for the busy Klimt rooms at the Belvedere. Book these online ahead. Many other sights can be entered on the day, though a queue is likely in high season.
For a day of sightseeing a 24-hour ticket usually beats single fares after about three rides. Vienna dropped the old 48 and 72-hour passes in 2026, so for two or three days compare stacking 24-hour tickets against the 7-day pass. Buy from machines, the app or a tobacconist.
