Watch out in Cancún

Timeshare 'free tour' touts (OPC)Politely decline anyone offering something free in exchange for your time. Never sign anything or hand over a deposit on the spot; walk away, and book tours and transfers through your hotel or a reputable operator instead.
Taxi overcharging and no airport UberAgree the fare before getting in and know the rough rate, or pre-book a fixed-price transfer. Use the cheap ADO bus from the airport, and in town use Uber (legal in the Hotel Zone) or ask your hotel to call a trusted taxi.
ATM skimming and dodgy machinesUse ATMs inside a bank or your hotel lobby during the day, cover the keypad as you type, check the card slot for anything loose, and set up a transaction alert. Carry some cash so one blocked card doesn't strand you.

Cancún sits on the Caribbean edge of Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula, a resort city built in two halves. The Hotel Zone (Zona Hotelera) is a long, thin sandbar of white-sand beaches, big all-inclusive resorts, marinas and nightlife, curving along impossibly turquoise water; downtown Cancún (El Centro), a few kilometres…

Chichén Itzá day trip

One of the New Seven Wonders of the World and a UNESCO site, the Maya city of Chichén Itzá with its great pyramid of Kukulcán lies about two and a half hours inland from Cancún. Guided group day trips run roughly US$57–95 per person and usually bundle transport and a guide; note the site entrance fee (around US$35–40 for foreign visitors) is often collected separately on the day. Independent travellers can take the ADO bus and pay entry themselves for less.

Atrakcja

Tulum ruins

A walled Maya port city perched on a low cliff above a Caribbean beach, Tulum is the most scenic of the region's ruins and an easy trip south from Cancún. Foreign-visitor entry is modest (around 265 MXN, roughly US$15, plus small park fees), and mornings are best to beat the heat and crowds. Combine it with a swim on the beach below or a nearby cenote.

15–28 USD 2,5 godz.

Isla Mujeres ferry

A 20–30 minute Ultramar ferry from the Hotel Zone (Puerto Juárez / Gran Puerto) reaches this small, laid-back island famous for the calm, shallow turquoise water of Playa Norte. Round-trip tickets run about US$30–35. Rent a golf cart to circle the island, snorkel, and enjoy a slower, cheaper beach day than the Cancún strip.

17–35 USD 1 godz.

Xcaret & Xel-Há eco-parks

Xcaret is a large nature-and-culture park with underground rivers, wildlife and an evening show, with adult admission around US$168–189; sister park Xel-Há is a snorkelling lagoon with an all-inclusive food-and-drink day pass. Both are polished, family-friendly and pricey — book online in advance for the best rate and go early to make a full day of it.

168–192 USD 10 godz.

Taste it here

The must-try local dishes, sweets and fruits — including the exotic ones you won't find back home.

Dish

Cochinita pibil

The Yucatán's signature dish: pork marinated in achiote and sour orange, wrapped in banana leaves and slow-roasted until it falls apart, traditionally served with pickled red onion and tortillas. Rich, tangy and deeply local, it is found everywhere from market stalls to restaurants.

For Muslim travellers, note this is a pork dish. Kitchens that make it also serve plenty of chicken, fish and vegetable options, so ask for pollo (chicken) or pescado (fish) versions of tacos and mains.

Dish

Tacos al pastor

Mexico's beloved spit-roasted taco: marinated pork shaved off a vertical trompo, served on small tortillas with pineapple, onion and coriander. A cheap, delicious street-food staple you'll see at taquerías across downtown Cancún in the evenings.

Al pastor is pork, so Muslim travellers should skip it — but the same taquerías almost always offer tacos de pollo (chicken), pescado or camarón (fish or shrimp), and vegetarian fillings. Note that some places serve beer; ordering food only is completely normal.

Dish

Ceviche

Fresh Caribbean fish or seafood 'cooked' in lime juice with tomato, onion, coriander and chilli, served cold with tostadas — light, zingy and perfect in the heat. Cancún-style ceviche uses the local catch such as grouper, and shrimp and octopus versions are common.

A refreshing, pork-free choice that suits most travellers; make sure it's from a busy, reputable spot for freshness. Say no chilli ('sin chile') if you prefer it mild.

Dish

Tikin xic

A classic Yucatecan fish dish: whole fish or fillets marinated in achiote and sour orange, wrapped in banana leaf and grilled, often over wood. Smoky, citrusy and mild, it showcases the region's Maya-influenced flavours without the heat.

A great pork-free, alcohol-free option and a local speciality worth seeking out at seafood restaurants. Pair it with rice, beans and fresh tortillas.

Sweet

Marquesitas

A Yucatán street dessert: a thin crepe griddled until crisp, spread with fillings and rolled up. The classic pairing is Edam ('queso de bola') cheese with a sweet layer such as cajeta caramel, Nutella or jam — an odd-sounding but addictive sweet-and-savoury treat.

Look for the evening street carts around Parque de las Palapas downtown; they're cheap, made to order and a fun local experience. Generally suitable for most travellers, but ask about fillings if you avoid alcohol-flavoured ones.

Drink

Aguas frescas

Big glass jars of fresh fruit waters — jamaica (hibiscus), horchata (rice and cinnamon), tamarind, lime, watermelon — sold cheaply at markets, taquerías and street stalls. A cooling, non-alcoholic Mexican staple that pairs perfectly with tacos in the heat.

An easy, refreshing and alcohol-free drink for all travellers; choose stalls with high turnover and, if you have a sensitive stomach, ask whether it's made with purified water ('agua purificada').

Jak się dostać i poruszać

Rzeczywiste taryfy, nie turystyczne ceny.

Jak się tam dostać
ADO airport bus 40 min7–8 USD

The ADO coach from the airport is the cheapest way in — about US$7–8 per person on a fixed fare, running to the Hotel Zone and the downtown bus station (ADO Centro). Comfortable and air-conditioned; buy tickets at the official counter inside the terminal.

Airport taxi 25 min32–45 USD

Official airport taxis have no meter and charge by zone, so confirm the fare first; a Hotel Zone ride is around US$32–45 but curbside quotes without a booking can be much higher. Only rideshare 'Uber Taxi' reliably serves arrivals because of taxi-union rules.

Private shuttle / transfer 30 min15–25 USD

A pre-booked private or shared shuttle with a fixed price, roughly US$15–25 per person shared, is a popular middle option — met at arrivals, no haggling, and cheaper per head than a private taxi for a group. Book online before you fly.

Live directions & times in MapsReal routes from the airport or your spot — opens Google Maps
Jak się poruszać
City buses (R1/R2)Bezpłatne – 1 USD

The R1 and R2 buses run constantly along the Hotel Zone boulevard and into downtown for about US$0.70, paid in cash. The cheapest way to move around Cancún; flag them from any stop and keep small change handy.

Local taxis3–10 USD

In-town taxis are handy but unmetered, so agree the price before you get in — short Hotel Zone or downtown hops are typically a few dollars up to about US$10. Uber works in the Hotel Zone and downtown and shows the price upfront.

Ferries to the islands15–35 USD

Fast Ultramar ferries link Cancún to Isla Mujeres (about US$30–35 round trip, 20–30 minutes); other routes reach Cozumel from Playa del Carmen further south. Buy from the official ferry counters and ignore dockside sellers pushing pricier packages.

Colectivos (shared vans)1–3 USD

Shared colectivo vans run along the coast to Playa del Carmen and Tulum for only a dollar or two, leaving when full. The local way to reach the Riviera Maya cheaply; tell the driver your stop and pay in cash.

Walking

The Hotel Zone is long and spread out, so walking suits your immediate beach and resort area rather than crossing the strip; downtown is more compact and walkable. Carry water and sun protection — the heat and UV are strong.

Najlepszy czas na wizytę

styczeń–kwiecień i listopad–grudzień

The best time to visit Cancún is the dry season from December to April, when it is warm (around 23–30°C), rain is rare, the Caribbean is at its clearest and — importantly — sargassum seaweed is usually at its lowest. January to March are the prime months. The summer and early autumn (June to October) are hotter and more humid, and fall within the Atlantic hurricane season, which runs early June to early November and peaks August to October; direct hits on the Yucatán are uncommon but passing storms bring rain and wind. This warmer half of the year is also when sargassum is heaviest, and 2026 has been forecast as a record or near-record sargassum year with unusually early arrivals, so if clean, clear beaches are your priority, aim for late autumn through early spring and check daily beach conditions.

Bezpieczeństwo

OstrzeżenieSargassum, a brown seaweed, drifts onto Cancún's Caribbean beaches mainly from spring through summer, and 2026 is forecast to be an especially heavy year. It is not dangerous but can pile up, smell as it rots and cloud the water. Check daily sargassum trackers before a beach day, favour the more protected north-facing beaches and Isla Mujeres (Playa Norte), and consider resort pools when it is bad.
OstrożnośćCancún's hurricane season runs from early June to early November, peaking between August and October. Direct strikes are rare, but a passing storm can bring heavy rain, wind and travel disruption. If you travel in this window, consider travel insurance, keep an eye on the forecast, and follow your hotel's and the authorities' guidance during any storm warning.
OstrożnośćThe tourist areas of Cancún are generally safe and heavily policed, and most visits are trouble-free, but use normal city sense: watch your belongings and drinks in busy nightlife spots, avoid buying drugs (a common trigger for trouble), keep valuables in the hotel safe, and use Uber or a hotel-called taxi late at night rather than walking alone in unlit areas.

Ukryte skarby

Base yourself, or at least eat, in downtown Cancún (El Centro): the tacos, marquesitas and aguas frescas around Parque de las Palapas each evening cost a fraction of the Hotel Zone and are far more local.
Skip a pricey taxi and ride the R1 bus up and down the Hotel Zone for under a dollar — it stops near Playa Delfines, the free public beach with the giant CANCÚN sign and a lookout.
Take the public Ultramar ferry to Isla Mujeres for a calmer, cheaper beach day at Playa Norte, where the turquoise water is shallow and usually far clearer of sargassum than the mainland.

Często zadawane pytania

How many days do I need in Cancún?

Four to six days works well: a couple of relaxed beach days plus day trips to Chichén Itzá, Tulum, Isla Mujeres and a cenote or the MUSA underwater museum. If you want to explore more of the Riviera Maya — Playa del Carmen, Cozumel, Valladolid — add a few more days or base part of the trip further down the coast.

Is there Uber in Cancún?

Yes — Uber is legal and works in the Hotel Zone and downtown, showing the price upfront, which makes it a good defence against taxi overcharging. The catch is the airport: taxi-union contracts mean regular Uber usually can't pick up at arrivals, so plan to arrive by the ADO bus or a pre-booked transfer and use Uber once you're in town.

Do I need to worry about sargassum seaweed?

It depends on timing. Sargassum is heaviest from roughly April to August and 2026 is forecast to be a record year, so beaches can be affected in the warmer months. Visit December to March for the cleanest water, check daily sargassum trackers, and favour Isla Mujeres (Playa Norte) and north-facing beaches, which are usually clearer.

Is Cancún expensive?

It can be, especially in the Hotel Zone, but it doesn't have to be. Resort restaurants, beach clubs and organised tours are pricey, while downtown food, local buses, the ADO airport bus, public beaches and DIY day trips are excellent value. Knowing the fair fares, avoiding timeshare and taxi traps, and eating in El Centro keep costs well down.

Is it safe to visit Cancún?

Yes — the main tourist areas are heavily policed and most visits are trouble-free. The realistic risks are scams and overcharging rather than violent crime: timeshare touts, unmetered taxis and card skimming. Use normal precautions, agree fares in advance, avoid drugs, and you'll find Cancún a straightforward, welcoming place to travel.
