Watch out in Cape Town

Card skimming and 'helpful' ATM strangersUse ATMs inside banks or shopping malls, cover the keypad when entering your PIN, and never accept help from a stranger at the machine.
Unofficial parking attendant intimidationA small tip for a genuinely badged car guard is normal and appreciated, but you are not obligated to pay an aggressive unbadged tout; park in an attended, well-lit lot where possible.
Unmetered taxi overchargeAgree the fare before getting in if no meter is running, or use a rideshare app that shows the price upfront.

Cape Town sits where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans nearly meet, wrapped around the flat-topped bulk of Table Mountain and framed by a long, dramatic coastline. It is one of the most naturally spectacular cities in the world, mixing colonial and modern architecture, vibrant multicultural neighbourhoods and a food and…

Atrakcja

Table Mountain cable car

A rotating cable car climbs from the base station to the flat summit of Table Mountain in a few minutes, with panoramic views over the city, the harbour and the coastline. Book a timed ticket in advance, as clouds can close the cableway with little notice.

28–33 USD 2 godz.
Doświadczenie

Robben Island tour

A ferry crosses from the waterfront to the island where political prisoners, including Nelson Mandela, were held for decades, followed by a guided tour of the former prison led largely by former inmates. Tickets sell out days ahead in peak season, so book early.

36–50 USD 4 godz.
Aktywność

Cape Point and Boulders Beach penguin day tour

A scenic drive down the peninsula to Cape Point, the rugged headland at its southern tip, usually paired with a stop at Boulders Beach, known for its resident colony of African penguins. Most visitors join a guided day tour that covers both stops.

60–110 USD 8 godz.
Aktywność

Cape Winelands day tour

A day trip into the mountain valleys of Stellenbosch and Constantia outside the city, home to some of the oldest wine estates in the southern hemisphere, with tastings, cellar tours and gourmet lunches. A driver or organized tour is worth it so no one has to skip the tastings.

The must-try local dishes, sweets and fruits — including the exotic ones you won't find back home.

BobotieDishOlga Ernst / Wikimedia Commons / CC BY-SA 4.0

Bobotie

South Africa's best-known national dish: spiced minced meat baked under a golden egg custard, studded with raisins and mild curry spice, usually served with yellow rice and fruit chutney. It captures Cape Malay cuisine at its best, a 300-year-old cooking tradition centred in Bo-Kaap.

Order it at a Cape Malay restaurant in or near Bo-Kaap for the most authentic version.

BiltongDishBonolo Nikita Rankaga / Wikimedia Commons / CC0 1.0

Biltong

Air-dried, vinegar-and-spice-cured meat, usually beef, that South Africans snack on the way other countries snack on chips. It has a deep savoury flavour and a chewy-to-crumbly texture depending on how it's cut, and is sold everywhere from petrol stations to specialty butcheries.

Ask for it 'wet' for a softer bite or 'dry' for a firmer one, and try a few spice styles before buying a full bag.

Malva puddingSweetValereee / Wikimedia Commons / CC0 1.0

Malva pudding

A warm, spongy caramelised cake with Cape Dutch roots, soaked in a hot butter-cream sauce the moment it comes out of the oven and served with custard or ice cream. It is the definitive South African comfort dessert, found on nearly every traditional menu.

Order it warm, since the sauce is meant to soak into the sponge while it's still hot.

Rooibos teaDrinkAndré Helbig (soultea.de) / Wikimedia Commons / CC BY-SA 3.0

Rooibos tea

A naturally caffeine-free herbal tea made from a plant that grows only in the Cederberg mountains north of Cape Town, brewed to a reddish amber with a smooth, faintly sweet, earthy flavour. It is South Africa's most famous drink export and carries EU protected-origin status, similar to champagne.

Try it plain first, then with a splash of milk and honey the way many locals drink it.

Ostrich steakDishSatdeep Gill / Wikimedia Commons / CC BY-SA 4.0

Ostrich steak

A lean, dark red meat farmed extensively in the Western Cape, where the town of Oudtshoorn calls itself the ostrich capital of the world, and it tastes closer to beef than to poultry despite coming from a bird, a genuinely unusual pairing for most first-time visitors. It is low in fat and usually served seared and pink, like a fine cut of beef.

Look for it on Cape Town steakhouse menus, or try it fresh at an ostrich farm near Cape Point.

The essentials most travellers book anyway — real providers for this destination.

Jak się dostać i poruszać

Rzeczywiste taryfy, nie turystyczne ceny.

Jak się tam dostać
Fly into Cape Town International Airport 2 godz.100–400 USD

The airport sits around twenty minutes from the city centre, with rideshare, shuttle and metered taxi options available at the arrivals hall.

Self-drive along the southern coastal route 6 godz.40–70 USD

A well-known scenic drive links Cape Town with coastal towns to the east, with dramatic ocean views but long stretches without services, so fill up on fuel regularly.

Long-distance coach from Johannesburg 20 godz.30–60 USD

Overnight coach services cover the roughly 1,400-kilometre route between Johannesburg and Cape Town, a budget option that takes considerably longer than flying.

Jak się poruszać
City bus network1–2 USD

A dedicated bus network with its own lanes connects the city centre, waterfront and several suburbs, and requires a prepaid smart card to board.

Rideshare (Uber/Bolt)4–10 USD

The most straightforward way to get around for visitors, with the fare and driver details confirmed before you get in.

Shared minibus taxi1–2 USD

An informal but extensive network used daily by most residents, running fixed routes at very low fares, though route knowledge helps a lot for first-time riders.

Najlepszy czas na wizytę

marzec–maj i wrzesień–listopad

March to May and September to November offer mild temperatures, fewer crowds and calmer winds than the peak summer months. December to February is hot, dry and often very windy, while June to August brings the rainy winter season with the most changeable weather on Table Mountain.

Bezpieczeństwo

OstrzeżenieBag snatching and pickpocketing can happen in crowded tourist areas and on some beaches; keep valuables close, avoid displaying expensive cameras or phones openly, and do not leave belongings unattended.
OstrożnośćThe sun is strong even on cool or overcast days at this latitude, and sunburn happens quickly on hikes or at the beach. Wear sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses, and reapply sunscreen through the day.
OstrzeżenieWeather on Table Mountain can change within minutes, with cloud, wind or rain closing the cableway or making hiking trails dangerous with almost no warning. Check the forecast and cableway status before heading up, and never hike alone on unfamiliar trails.

Ukryte skarby

Ride the cable car up early on a clear morning before the tour buses arrive for a quieter summit and softer light for photos.
Book Robben Island tickets online well ahead of time, since the ferry sells out fast in the summer season.
Visit a smaller family-run wine estate outside the busiest towns for a quieter, more personal tasting than the big-name properties.

Często zadawane pytania

How many days do I need in Cape Town?

Four to five days let you cover Table Mountain, Robben Island, a peninsula day trip and a day in the Winelands without rushing, with extra time worth adding for beaches or a longer wine-country stay.

Is Cape Town safe for tourists?

The main tourist areas are generally fine with common-sense precautions, but petty theft and car break-ins do happen, so keep valuables out of sight, use rideshare apps at night, and avoid isolated areas after dark.

Do I need a car in Cape Town?

Not for the city centre and waterfront, which are well served by rideshare and the city bus network, but a car or organized tour makes exploring the peninsula and wine country much easier.

What is the best time to see Table Mountain?

Clear, calm mornings offer the best chance of an open cableway and unobstructed views; always check the live status before heading to the base station, since cloud or wind can close it without notice.

Is Cape Town expensive?

Compared with major European or North American cities, Cape Town is generally affordable, though top restaurants, guided tours and premium wine tastings can add up quickly.
