Bangkok is the capital of Thailand and one of Asia's most exciting cities, a sprawling mix of glittering temples, modern malls, canal-side markets and some of the best street food in the world. The Chao Phraya River threads through the old city, where the Grand Palace, Wat Pho and Wat Arun sit within easy reach of each other, while the newer districts hum with rooftop bars and the elevated Skytrain. It is hot, busy and endlessly stimulating, best tackled with an early start, plenty of water and a relaxed attitude to the traffic and crowds. Getting around is easy and cheap once you use the Skytrain, metro and river boats instead of getting stuck in road traffic. Bangkok is also famous for a handful of well-known tourist scams, almost all avoidable with a little awareness. Eat at the busy street stalls, temple-hop in the cool of the morning, and give the city a few days to reveal its rhythm.
