Visão geral

Mykonos is the most famous of the Cyclades, a small, sun-bleached island wrapped around a picture-perfect white town and ringed by golden beaches. Its trademark row of stone windmills stands above Chora, the main town, whose maze of whitewashed lanes, blue doors and bougainvillea is designed to confuse pirates and…

Taste it here

The must-try local dishes, sweets and fruits — including the exotic ones you won't find back home.

Dish

Kopanisti

A soft, sharp, peppery aged cheese that is a protected specialty of Mykonos and the Cyclades, spread on bread or rusks as a meze. Its strong, tangy flavour comes from a long fermentation and it is a true local taste.

Try it spread on a barley rusk with tomato and olive oil, a classic Cycladic mouthful.

Dish

Louza

A cured, air-dried pork fillet seasoned with salt and spices, a traditional Cycladic cold cut served in thin slices with cheese and wine. On Mykonos it is a prized part of the local table.

Look for it in traditional delis and mezedopoleia rather than tourist restaurants for the real thing.

Amygdalota

Soft, chewy almond sweets made with ground almonds and sugar, often shaped into small pears or balls and dusted with icing sugar, a classic Cycladic treat. They are a common gift and festive sweet across the islands.

They keep well, so they make a good edible souvenir to take home.

GyrosDishAntonio Fajardo i López / Wikimedia Commons (CC BY-SA 3.0)

Gyros

Slices of seasoned meat from a vertical spit, wrapped in pita with tomato, onion and tzatziki, the dependable cheap meal even on a pricey island. A busy local grill is your best value for money in Chora.

It costs a little more than on the mainland here, but is still a fraction of a sit-down dinner.

Ouzo

Greece's anise-flavoured spirit, clear in the glass but turning milky when water or ice is added, sipped slowly with meze by the water. On Mykonos it is the classic accompaniment to seafood and a Cycladic sunset.

Order it with a few small plates rather than alone; it is meant to be drunk slowly with food.

Taxi overcharge

Como funciona: With few taxis on the island, drivers may quote inflated flat fares, especially late at night from the port, airport or party beaches, or add vague extras.

Como evitar: Use the official taxi rank or a booking app, agree the fare before setting off, know that legitimate luggage and airport surcharges are small, and keep small notes.

Como chegar lá e se mover

Tarifas reais, não preços para turistas.

Como chegar
Ferry from Piraeus 3 hUS$ 55–110

Most visitors reach Mykonos by ferry from Piraeus or Rafina near Athens, with fast catamarans and slower conventional boats. Prices and times vary a lot by boat and season, and services can be cancelled in strong winds.

Airport taxi 15 minUS$ 18–40

The airport is only a few kilometres from town, so the taxi ride is short. Taxis are limited in number and can be pricey with surcharges, and queues build in high season.

Airport bus 20 minUS$ 2–4

A KTEL bus links the airport with the main bus stations in town for a low fare, though it runs to a seasonal timetable and less often off-season. Cheap but not always convenient with luggage.

Live directions & times in MapsReal routes from the airport or your spot — opens Google Maps
Como se mover
KTEL busesUS$ 2–3

The island's bus network connects town with the main beaches and villages cheaply from two central stations. Buses are frequent in summer and sparse in winter, and are cash-first, so carry euros.

TaxisUS$ 10–40

Taxis are few for such a busy island, so waits can be long and fares high, especially at night. Book ahead where you can and agree the fare, as demand far outstrips supply in peak season.

Walking in town

Chora is compact, car-free in its core and best explored on foot through the whitewashed lanes. Wear comfortable shoes, as the maze of alleys and steps is easy to get lost in, which is part of the charm.

Melhor época para visitar

maio–junho e setembro–outubro

Late spring (May to June) and early autumn (September to October) offer warm weather, swimmable seas, lively but manageable crowds and better value than peak season. July and August are hot, extremely busy and the most expensive, often with the strong meltemi wind that can cancel ferries, while winter is quiet with many places closed.

Segurança

AvisoSummer sun is strong with little shade on the beaches and among the ruins of Delos. Carry water, wear a hat and high-factor sunscreen, avoid the midday hours on exposed sites, and drink plenty, especially around alcohol and long beach days.
CautelaThe meltemi is a strong, dry north wind that blows hard in summer, whipping up the sea, cancelling ferries and small boats, and making exposed beaches uncomfortable. Check forecasts, plan the Delos trip for a calm morning, and keep flexible ferry plans.
CautelaMykonos nightlife runs late and drinks are strong and expensive. Watch your tab and your drink, never leave a drink unattended, agree taxi fares home in advance, and take care around the water and cliffs after dark.

Jóias escondidas

Skip the pricey clubs and watch the sunset for free from the rocks below the windmills or the far end of Little Venice with a cheap drink bought inland.
Take the first morning boat to Delos before the tour groups and heat arrive, and hire the small on-site guidebook rather than a costly tour.
Ride the local KTEL bus to a quieter northern beach like Fokos or Agios Sostis, where there are no big beach clubs and sand is simply free.

Perguntas frequentes

Is Mykonos really that expensive?

Yes, it is one of the priciest destinations in Greece, especially for beach clubs, cocktails and waterfront dining in high season. You can cut costs a lot by eating inland, using the buses, and visiting in spring or autumn.

How do I get to Mykonos?

Most people arrive by ferry from Piraeus or Rafina near Athens, or fly into the island's small airport, which also has seasonal international flights. Ferries vary widely in price and speed, and can be cancelled in strong winds.

Is the Delos day trip worth it?

For anyone interested in history it is a highlight, a whole uninhabited island of ancient ruins and a UNESCO site. Budget for the round-trip ferry and the separate site entry, go early, and allow around half a day.

When is the best time to visit?

May to June and September to October give warm weather, swimmable seas and lighter crowds at better prices. July and August are hottest, busiest and dearest, often with a strong meltemi wind, and winter is very quiet.

Do I need to rent a vehicle?

Not necessarily. The KTEL buses reach the main beaches and town cheaply, and Chora is walked on foot. A rented ATV or car helps reach quieter beaches, but parking near town is limited and roads get busy in summer.
