Visão geral

Krabi is the beach-and-islands province on Thailand's Andaman coast, a landscape of dramatic limestone karst cliffs rising straight out of turquoise water, palm-backed beaches and dozens of islands within a short boat ride. Most visitors base themselves in Ao Nang, the lively mainland beach town of hotels, restaurants…

Jóias escondidas

Cross to Railay for at least a sunset or a night: once the day-trip boats leave, the cliff-ringed beaches are far quieter and more magical than they look at midday.

Railay Beach

A stunning peninsula of white-sand beaches enclosed by sheer limestone cliffs, cut off from the mainland road and reached only by longtail boat from Ao Nang or Krabi Town. Home to Railay West and East, the beautiful Phra Nang Cave Beach, and Thailand's premier rock climbing. Agree the boat fare before you cross.

Four Islands tour

The classic Krabi day trip by longtail or speedboat, visiting Phra Nang Cave, Chicken Island, Tup Island and Poda Island for snorkelling, swimming and the sandbar that links islands at low tide. Shared tours are cheap and popular; the national marine park fee is usually charged on top.

Tiger Cave Temple (Wat Tham Suea)

A forest temple whose main draw is the punishing climb of around 1,237 steps to a mountaintop golden Buddha and a sweeping 360-degree view over Krabi's karst landscape. Entry is free; go at dawn to beat the heat and start the climb with water and proper shoes.

Ao Nang beach and town

The main mainland resort strip, a walkable beachfront of restaurants, bars, shops and boat piers that serves as Krabi's hub. The beach itself is pleasant, and the promenade is the jumping-off point for nearly every boat trip. Free to enjoy; browse a few operators before booking a tour.

The must-try local dishes, sweets and fruits — including the exotic ones you won't find back home.

Massaman CurryDishTakeaway / Wikimedia Commons (CC BY-SA 3.0)

Massaman Curry

A mild, aromatic curry of Persian-Muslim origin that is a southern-Thai signature, slow-cooked with beef or chicken, potatoes, peanuts and warm spices like cinnamon, cardamom and star anise. Richer and sweeter than most Thai curries, it reflects the region's Muslim heritage and is often ranked among the world's best dishes.

Eat it with plain rice to balance the richness, and seek out a southern-Thai or Muslim restaurant where it is a house specialty rather than a tourist add-on.

Dish

Gaeng Som (Southern Sour Curry)

A fiercely sour, spicy orange curry built on tamarind and a chili-turmeric paste, usually cooked with fish and vegetables. It is a cornerstone of everyday southern-Thai eating and much hotter and sharper than the curries most visitors know.

It is genuinely spicy and sour, so try a little first with plenty of rice; it pairs especially well with fresh local fish.

Khao Mok Gai (Thai Chicken Biryani)DishTonbi ko / Wikimedia Commons (CC BY-SA 3.0)

Khao Mok Gai (Thai Chicken Biryani)

The Thai-Muslim take on biryani: turmeric-yellow rice cooked with chicken and warm spices, served with a sweet-and-sour dipping sauce and often fried shallots. Common in southern Thailand's Muslim communities and a satisfying, mild introduction to the region's food.

Look for it at Muslim-run shops and markets, where it is freshest and most authentic; the dipping sauce is part of the dish, so use it.

RotiSweetAnderson (แอนเดอร์สัน) / Wikimedia Commons (CC BY-SA 4.0)

Roti

A pan-fried flatbread of Indian-Muslim origin, sold from street carts across southern Thailand and most loved in its sweet form, folded around banana and drizzled with condensed milk and sugar. Savoury versions come with curry. It is the classic Krabi street snack.

Order the banana-and-condensed-milk roti fresh off the griddle from an evening street cart for the best version.

Cha Yen (Thai Iced Tea)DrinkTakeaway / Wikimedia Commons (CC BY-SA 3.0)

Cha Yen (Thai Iced Tea)

The bright-orange Thai iced tea, strong sweet black tea with condensed and evaporated milk poured over ice, sold everywhere from carts to cafes. Sweet, creamy and cooling, it is the perfect drink for Krabi's heat and beach days.

Ask for it less sweet ('wan noi') if the standard version is too sugary, and buy from a busy cart for the freshest brew.

Melhor época para visitar

janeiro–março e novembro–dezembro

The dry season from November to March is the best time to visit, with calm Andaman seas, sunshine and reliable island-hopping, and it is also the busiest and priciest window, peaking around December and January. April and May are very hot before the rains. The southwest monsoon from roughly May to October brings heavier rain, rougher seas and stronger currents, when some longtail crossings and island tours are cancelled on bad days, though prices drop and the landscape turns lush and green.

Segurança

CautelaDuring the May-to-October monsoon the Andaman Sea can turn rough with strong rip currents, and some beaches fly red warning flags. Heed the flags and lifeguards, do not swim when red flags are up, and accept that boat trips may be cancelled in bad weather for good reason.
CautelaLongtail boats are the everyday transport but vary in condition and rarely feel formal about safety. Check that life jackets are available before boarding, avoid clearly overloaded boats, and think twice about crossings in rough seas or after dark.
CautelaThe tropical sun is strong, especially on open boats, beaches and the long, shadeless climb at Tiger Cave Temple. Wear reef-safe sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses, carry water, and protect children and older travellers, who feel the heat fastest.

Jóias escondidas

Cross to Railay for at least a sunset or a night: once the day-trip boats leave, the cliff-ringed beaches are far quieter and more magical than they look at midday.
Climb Tiger Cave Temple's staircase at first light, when the air is cooler and the sunrise view over the karst valley is at its best before the heat sets in.
Skip the tourist-strip restaurants for a busy local southern-Thai or Muslim eatery, where the massaman curry, khao mok gai and fresh seafood are cheaper and better.

Perguntas frequentes

Should I stay in Ao Nang or Railay?

Ao Nang has the most hotels, restaurants and transport connections and is the easiest base for day trips. Railay is more beautiful and laid-back but smaller, pricier and reachable only by boat. Many visitors base in Ao Nang and day-trip to Railay, or split their stay between the two.

How do I get from Ao Nang to Railay Beach?

By shared longtail boat from Ao Nang beach, which leaves once it has around eight to ten passengers, for a standard per-person daytime fare. The crossing takes about 15 minutes; after dark fares rise and you may need a private charter.

When is the best time to visit Krabi?

November to March, the dry season, for calm seas, sunshine and reliable island-hopping, though it is also the busiest and most expensive. The May-to-October monsoon is wetter with rougher seas and some cancelled boat trips, but quieter and cheaper.

Is the national park fee included in island tours?

Often not. Many tour prices exclude the government national marine park fee, which is collected separately from foreign visitors at the pier or on the islands. Always ask whether it is included and carry cash for it.

What food is Krabi known for?

Southern Thai and Thai-Muslim cooking, including rich massaman curry, tangy gaeng som (southern sour curry), khao mok gai (Thai chicken biryani) and roti, alongside abundant fresh Andaman seafood grilled or steamed to order.
