Beijing

China's imperial capital of grand palaces and the Great Wall

Privire de ansamblu

Beijing is the capital of China and the political and cultural centre of the country, a vast city where imperial history meets a fast-moving modern metropolis. At its heart lie Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City, the enormous palace complex of the Ming and Qing emperors, while the Temple of Heaven and the Summer Palace show the grandeur and gardens of the same era. Beyond the city, the Great Wall winds over the northern mountains and is the highlight of most visits. Between the monuments, the old hutong lanes offer a slower, more human scale of courtyard homes, small restaurants and street life. Beijing is huge, and the excellent subway plus ride-hailing apps make it manageable once you have a payment app set up. English is limited, so saving addresses in Chinese and carrying a translation app help a lot. With a little preparation it is a rewarding, orderly and surprisingly affordable city to explore.

Airport Express train
per persoană
20 - 34 CNY · 3 - 5 USD

The Airport Express is a fast, cheap link into the subway network. Pay with a travel QR code in a local app or a transport card and avoid drivers offering rides at the arrivals hall.

Official airport taxi
per curs
81 - 169 CNY · 12 - 25 USD

Use only the marked taxi queue outside the terminal and insist on the meter. Ignore anyone approaching you inside with a 'taxi' offer, which is almost always overpriced.

Single subway ride
per curs
3 - 9 CNY · 0 - 1 USD

The Beijing Subway is cheap, clean and extensive, priced by distance. A transport card or a QR code in a local app is the easiest way to pay and skip ticket queues.

Ride-hailing car trip
per curs
14 - 41 CNY · 2 - 6 USD

App-based cars give a fixed upfront price and avoid language issues, since you set the destination in the app. Much cheaper than being overcharged by an unofficial car.

Street jianbing or baozi
per item
7 - 20 CNY · 1 - 3 USD

Breakfast pancakes and steamed buns from busy local stalls are excellent value. Mobile payment is standard, so having a working payment app helps.

Mid-range restaurant meal
per persoană
41 - 122 CNY · 6 - 18 USD

Eat where locals do, away from the big sights, for better prices and food. Picture menus help, and portions are often generous enough to share.

Bottled water
per sticlă
2 - 7 CNY · 0 - 1 USD

Buy from convenience stores rather than at tourist sites. Tap water is not for drinking, so carry sealed bottled water, especially in summer.

The tea-house ceremony scam
Mare

Cum funcționează: Friendly English-speaking 'students' or 'tourists' invite you to a traditional tea ceremony nearby, then you are presented with an enormous bill for the tea and cannot easily leave.

Cum să o eviți: Politely decline invitations from strangers to a specific tea house, bar or gallery. Choose your own venues and never follow a new acquaintance to a place they insist on.

Rigged art-student gallery
Medie

Cum funcționează: People posing as art students befriend you near the sights and steer you to a 'student exhibition', pressuring you to buy overpriced paintings as a favour.

Cum să o eviți: Be wary of strangers who quickly guide you to a shop or gallery. There is no obligation to buy, so decline firmly and walk away if you feel pressured.

Unlicensed airport taxi
Medie

Cum funcționează: Touts at the airport or major stations offer an unofficial 'taxi' at a flat rate, then charge far above the metered fare or demand more on arrival.

Cum să o eviți: Use only the official taxi rank with the meter, the Airport Express, or a ride-hailing app. Never accept a ride from someone approaching you inside the terminal.

Fake or low-quality Great Wall tour
Medie

Cum funcționează: Cheap street or hostel-touted 'Great Wall tours' can include long detours to jade or medicine shops for commission, or drop you at a lesser section than promised.

Cum să o eviți: Book a reputable tour or go independently by public transport. Confirm exactly which wall section, what is included, and that there are no shopping stops before paying.

Cea mai bună perioadă pentru a vizita

aprilie–mai și septembrie–octombrie

Spring (April to May) and autumn (September to October) offer the mildest, clearest weather and are ideal for the Great Wall and outdoor sights. Summer is hot, humid and busy, while winter is cold and dry with occasional heavier air pollution.

Siguranță

AtențieAir quality varies and can be poor on some days, especially in winter. Check an air-quality app, and if you are sensitive, consider a mask on high-pollution days and plan indoor sights then.
AtențieMajor sights involve large crowds, security checks and passport scans, and can sell out. Book timed tickets ahead, carry your passport, and arrive early to avoid the worst queues.
AtențieEnglish is limited outside tourist hubs. Save addresses in Chinese, keep a translation and map app offline-ready, and set up a working mobile payment method before you rely on it.

Perlele ascunse

Ride a small boat or stroll the long corridor at the Summer Palace for a calm half-day away from the busiest sights.
Explore the hutongs around the Drum and Bell Towers on foot at dusk for local restaurants and courtyard life.
Choose a quieter Great Wall section and go early to walk long stretches with far fewer people.

How many days should I spend in Beijing?

Three to four days lets you cover the Forbidden City and Tiananmen, the Temple of Heaven or Summer Palace, a hutong area and a full day at the Great Wall without rushing.
