Indonesia's second-highest volcano, with the sacred Segara Anak crater lake and hot springs inside. Most visitors do a two- or three-day guided trek from Senaru or Sembalun, sleeping on the crater rim. It is demanding and cold at altitude, so book a licensed operator, check the season and pack warm layers. Climbing routes usually close in the wet months.
Two beautiful jungle waterfalls near Senaru on Rinjani's northern slopes, reached by a short forest walk and a shallow river crossing. Tiu Kelep, the further of the two, tumbles into a wide pool popular for a cool swim. A small entry fee applies and a local guide is usually offered at the gate.
A laid-back surf town on the south coast, a base for wide bays like Tanjung Aan, Mawun and Selong Belanak. The sand is pale and soft, the water turquoise, and the breaks suit everyone from first-timers to experts. Rent a scooter to reach a different beach each day and stay for sunset.

It takes its name from the Karang Taliwang area near Mataram and is almost always served with plecing kangkung and rice. It is properly spicy, a point of local pride.
Order it at a busy warung around Karang Taliwang or Cakranegara for the most authentic version, and ask for it less spicy if you are unsure.

It is the classic partner to ayam taliwang and appears on nearly every local table.
Great as a refreshing, spicy counterpoint to grilled meats; it is usually vegetarian but the sambal typically contains shrimp paste, so ask if you avoid it.

Named after the Rembiga area of Mataram, it is a beloved Lombok street food, richer and hotter than the milder satays found elsewhere in Indonesia.
Look for a stall grilling to order and eat the skewers hot; a plate is often served with lontong or ketupat rice cakes.
A everyday plate of rice piled with shredded spicy chicken, crunchy fried soybeans, dried shredded beef or coconut and a fierce sambal, originally from the village of Puyung in central Lombok. Each element is intense on its own, and together they make a cheap, satisfying meal.
It is genuinely spicy; the well-known Puyung-branded warungs across the island are a reliable place to try the original.
A raw Sasak relish of diced aubergine and long beans tossed in a sharp tomato-and-chilli sambal with lime and shrimp paste, crunchy and fiery. It is a common fresh side served alongside grilled chicken and rice, cutting the richness with acidity and heat.
Try it with ayam taliwang for the full Sasak spread; the aubergine is usually served raw, so expect a firm, crunchy bite.
Coffee grown on the fertile volcanic slopes of Mount Rinjani, especially around Sembalun and Sapit, mostly robusta with some arabica. It is typically served as kopi tubruk, strong and unfiltered, with the grounds settling at the bottom of a sweet, black cup, a staple of Sasak hospitality.
Let the grounds settle before you sip, and look for beans from the Rinjani foothills as an easy, lightweight souvenir.

The DAMRI public bus links Lombok International Airport with Mataram and Senggigi for a low fixed fare, running through the day. Comfortable and cheap, but there is no direct route to Kuta Lombok, and services run only every hour or so.
Grab and Gojek work at the airport and fix the fare in the app, usually cheaper and clearer than a street taxi. You may need to walk to a designated pickup point away from the terminal doors, and a data connection to book.
Official taxis from the airport desk use a meter or set zone fare and are convenient with luggage or on late arrivals. Kuta Lombok is about 30 minutes away and Senggigi around 90; confirm the fare and use only the official rank.
Renting a scooter is the classic way to get around Lombok, cheap and flexible for reaching beaches and villages. Roads vary from good to rough and potholed, so ride carefully, always wear a helmet and avoid night rides on unlit rural roads.
Ride-hailing apps cover Mataram, Senggigi and the airport well, offering car and scooter rides at fixed in-app prices. Coverage thins in remote areas like the deep south and around Rinjani, where a private driver is more reliable.
Hiring a car and driver for the day is affordable and popular for touring the island's scattered sights, from waterfalls to Pink Beach. Agree the route, hours and price in advance; a good driver doubles as an informal guide.
The Gilis are reached by cheap public slow boats from Bangsal or by faster, pricier speedboats and shuttles from Senggigi, Bangsal and even Bali. Buy public tickets at the official office and confirm private prices before boarding.
The dry season from roughly April to October is the best time to visit, with sunny days, calmer seas for snorkelling and diving, and safer, clearer conditions for trekking Mount Rinjani, whose main routes usually close in the wet months. July and August are the busiest and driest, while the shoulder months of April to June and September to October balance good weather with fewer crowds. The wet season from November to March brings heavy downpours, rougher crossings and green, quiet landscapes.
Four to five days let you combine the south-coast beaches around Kuta with a couple of days on the Gili Islands. Add two to three more if you want to trek Mount Rinjani, which needs a dedicated multi-day trip of its own.
