Tourist scams in Bosnia and Herzegovina — and how to avoid them

These are the tourist scams Trzly has documented across Bosnia and Herzegovina, grouped by destination. Each one is real, with a clear way to stay safe. Read before you land.

Airport taxi touts

Drivers approach arrivals inside or just outside the terminal offering a ride, then charge a flat fare several times the normal metered price for the short trip into town.

Use the official taxi rank, a marked company taxi, or the cheap airport shuttle bus. Insist on the meter, or agree the fare before getting in, and ignore anyone who approaches you first.

Rigged or 'broken' taxi meters

Some unofficial taxis claim the meter is broken and quote an inflated price, or use a meter rigged to run fast, especially with tourists near the old town.

Choose a clearly marked taxi from a known local company, ordered by phone or app where possible. Check the meter starts at the standard flag fare and is running, and have a rough idea of the fair price first.

Poor exchange rates and euro change tricks

Some exchange desks in tourist spots offer bad rates or high commission, and a few places accept euros but give change back at an unfair rate.

The mark is fixed to the euro, so know the rough rate before changing money. Use a bank or a reputable exchange office, pay in marka where you can, and prefer card for larger purchases.

Inflated bills at tourist cafes

In a few heavily touristed spots a bill may add items you did not order or charge more than the menu, banking on visitors not checking.

Check that prices are displayed, keep an eye on the menu, and review the bill before paying. Well-reviewed places a street back from the busiest squares are both cheaper and more honest.
