Watch out in Sydney

Airport taxi long-hauling and toll-padding — Know that a NSW-set fixed fare (about A$60) applies from the airport to the city centre — ask for it. Check the route on your phone's map, use the official taxi rank, or take a metered rideshare or the Airport Link train instead.
Unlicensed 'private guide' touts — Licensed guides wear identification and work for registered companies. Decline unsolicited approaches and book any tour through a reputable operator or your accommodation.
Overpriced tourist-strip restaurants — Walk one or two streets back from the water, look for where locals eat, and check the menu and prices before sitting down. The same money buys much better food a short walk inland.

Översikt

Sydney is Australia's largest and best-known city, built around one of the world's most beautiful natural harbours. Its skyline is defined by two icons that sit side by side: the white sails of the Sydney Opera House and the great steel arch of the Harbour Bridge, both best seen on a short, cheap ferry ride across the…

Sydney Opera House tour

A UNESCO World Heritage masterpiece and the symbol of Australia, this 1973 performing-arts centre with its billowing white 'sails' is stunning from the outside for free. A one-hour guided interior tour (around A$48) takes you inside the concert halls and behind the scenes; you can also simply enjoy the forecourt and a drink at the Opera Bar.

Sydney Harbour Bridge & BridgeClimb

You can walk across the Harbour Bridge on the pedestrian path for free and climb the Pylon Lookout for a small fee, or book the famous BridgeClimb (roughly A$188–428) to summit the arch on a guided climb. The free walk and the pylon already give sweeping harbour views without the high price tag.

Bondi to Coogee coastal walk

A free, spectacular six-kilometre clifftop path linking Sydney's famous eastern beaches, passing Tamarama, Bronte and Clovelly with ocean views the whole way. Start at Bondi, allow a couple of hours, and cool off in the sea pools along the route. One of the best things to do in Sydney and it costs nothing.

Royal Botanic Garden

A free, expansive harbourside garden wrapping around Farm Cove right beside the Opera House, with lawns, tropical glasshouses and Mrs Macquarie's Chair viewpoint. A calm green break in the middle of the city and one of the best free spots for that classic Opera House–and–Bridge photo.

Taste it here

The must-try local dishes, sweets and fruits — including the exotic ones you won't find back home.

Dish

Meat pie

The classic Australian hand-held pie — flaky pastry filled with minced beef and rich gravy — is a beloved everyday snack sold at bakeries, cafes, footy games and roadside stops across Sydney. Simple, hot and cheap, it's an edible piece of Aussie culture.

Grab one from a good local bakery and eat it the Aussie way, with a squeeze of tomato sauce (ketchup) on top.

Dish

Sydney rock oysters

A prized native oyster grown in the estuaries around New South Wales, small, creamy and intensely flavoured, and a genuine Sydney speciality. They appear on menus across the city, especially near the water, and are at their best eaten fresh and simple.

Order them freshly shucked with just a squeeze of lemon; look for them at the Sydney Fish Market or a good seafood restaurant.

Dish

Barramundi

A firm, mild white fish native to northern Australian waters and a staple of modern Australian menus, often served grilled or pan-fried with lemon. A reliable, sustainable choice that shows off Australia's excellent seafood.

Try it grilled at a harbourside or pub kitchen, or battered as the local 'fish' in fish and chips by the beach.

Drink

Flat white

The espresso-and-steamed-milk coffee that Australia and New Zealand claim as their own, and the drink that powers Sydney's serious cafe culture. Smaller and stronger than a latte, made properly by skilled baristas at countless independent cafes.

Order one at a busy independent cafe rather than a chain, and pair it with brunch — Sydney's other great food ritual.

Sweet

Lamington

An iconic Australian sweet: a cube of sponge cake dipped in chocolate icing and rolled in desiccated coconut, sometimes with a layer of jam or cream in the middle. A nostalgic tea-time treat found in bakeries and cafes across the city.

Have one with a flat white or a cup of tea in the afternoon; the jam-and-cream version is worth seeking out.

Sweet

Pavlova

A crisp-shelled, marshmallow-soft meringue dessert piled with whipped cream and fresh fruit such as passionfruit and strawberries, a fixture of Australian celebrations and summer tables. Light, sweet and quintessentially Aussie.

Look for it at cafes and bakeries in summer, topped with passionfruit for the classic version.

Complete your trip

The essentials most travellers book anyway — real providers for this destination.

Hur man kommer dit och rör sig

Verkliga taxor, inte turistpriser.

Hur man kommer dit
Airport Link train 15 min13–16 US$

The fastest way into the city, reaching the CBD in about fifteen minutes on the T8 line, but with a station access fee that pushes the total to around A$22. Tap on and off with an Opal card or a contactless bank card.

Airport taxi 25 min38–53 US$

Taxis from the rank charge a NSW-set fixed fare of about A$60 to the city centre (A$80 for a larger maxi taxi), which protects you from meter games. Convenient with luggage; confirm the fixed CBD fare with the driver.

Rideshare (Uber/DiDi/Ola) 25 min23–36 US$

Booked from the designated airport pickup zone, a rideshare to the CBD usually costs less than a taxi outside of peak times. Watch for surge pricing on weekend nights and during major events.

Budget bus + train 50 min3–4 US$

The cheapest airport link: a local bus (route 420) to a nearby station and then a normal train into the city for only a few dollars on Opal, avoiding the airport station access fee. Slower and with a transfer, but a big saving for light travellers.

Hur man rör sig
Trains (Opal)2–4 US$

Sydney Trains and the driverless Metro cover the city and suburbs cheaply on a tap-and-go Opal card or contactless bank card, with daily and weekly fare caps. The fastest way to move across the wider city.

Buses (Opal)2–3 US$

An extensive bus network fills the gaps the trains miss, including the run out to Bondi Beach, all on the same Opal fare. Tap on and off; fares are capped daily so a busy day of travel stays affordable.

Ferries (Opal)5–7 US$

Sydney's public ferries from Circular Quay are both transport and sightseeing, reaching Manly, Taronga Zoo, Watsons Bay and more for a normal Opal fare. Far cheaper than tourist cruises for the same harbour views.

Light rail (tram)2–3 US$

Modern trams run through the CBD and out to the inner suburbs and the stadiums, useful for short hops along George Street, all on the same tap-and-go Opal fare.

Walking

The harbour core — Circular Quay, the Opera House, the Royal Botanic Garden, the Rocks and the CBD — is compact and rewarding on foot, with harbour views at every turn. Wear sun protection and comfortable shoes.

Bästa tiden att besöka

mars–maj och september–november

The best times to visit Sydney are autumn (March to May) and spring (September to November), when the weather is mild and sunny, the ocean is still swimmable and the crowds and prices are lower than in peak summer. Summer (December to February) is hot, humid and busy, with the huge New Year's Eve fireworks over the harbour but the highest prices and fullest beaches. Winter (June to August) is cool and can be wet but rarely cold, and is the cheapest time to visit. Whatever the season, Sydney's sun is strong, so sun protection matters year-round.

Säkerhet

VarningSydney's ocean beaches, including Bondi, have powerful rip currents that pull swimmers out to sea and are the main safety risk for visitors. Always swim between the red-and-yellow flags on patrolled beaches, never swim alone or after drinking, and if caught in a rip stay calm, raise an arm and float rather than fighting the current.
FörsiktighetAustralia has some of the strongest UV in the world and you can burn quickly even on a mild or cloudy day. Wear a high-SPF sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses, seek shade in the middle of the day, and cover up on the beach and during coastal walks.
FörsiktighetSydney is generally very safe, but as in any big city take normal care late at night around busy nightlife areas such as Kings Cross and parts of the CBD, watch your belongings in crowds, and use licensed taxis or rideshare to get home rather than walking alone.

Dolda pärlor

Skip the paid climbs and walk across the Harbour Bridge footpath for free at sunset, then drop down into Milsons Point for the classic view of the Opera House framed by the arch.
Ride the public Manly ferry rather than a tourist cruise — for a few dollars on Opal you get the same glide past the Opera House and out through the harbour heads.
Watch the sunset from Mrs Macquarie's Chair in the Royal Botanic Garden, the free harbourside spot where you can line up the Opera House and the Bridge in a single photo.

Vanliga frågor

How many days do I need in Sydney?

Three to four days lets you see the harbour icons, walk Bondi to Coogee, catch the Manly ferry, explore the Rocks and still have time for a day trip to the Blue Mountains. With more time you can add the northern beaches, more coastal walks and the wider food scene.

Do I need a car in Sydney?

No. Sydney has an excellent public transport network — trains, metro, buses, ferries and light rail — all covered by a single tap-and-go Opal card or a contactless bank card, with daily fare caps. A car is more hassle than help in the city; consider hiring one only for trips beyond it.

What is the Opal card and do I need one?

Opal is Sydney's public transport smartcard, but you don't strictly need the card itself — you can simply tap on and off trains, buses, ferries and light rail with a contactless credit or debit card or your phone, and the same daily and weekly fare caps apply. It's the cheapest and easiest way to get around.

Is Sydney expensive?

Yes, Sydney is one of the pricier cities for accommodation, dining and attractions, but many of its best experiences — the beaches, coastal walks, the Royal Botanic Garden, and admiring the Opera House and Bridge — are completely free, and public transport is good value. Knowing the fair fares and avoiding tourist-strip restaurants keeps costs down.

Is it safe to swim at Bondi and other beaches?

Yes, if you swim sensibly. Sydney's ocean beaches have strong rip currents, so always swim between the red-and-yellow flags on patrolled beaches, never swim alone or after drinking, and heed the lifeguards. The harbour beaches and ocean pools are calmer options.
