Watch out in Luxor

Unofficial 'guides' at tomb and temple entrancesA polite but firm 'no, thank you' before they start talking works best. If you want expert commentary, hire a licensed Egyptologist guide in advance instead.
'This tomb is closed' shop detourCheck opening status yourself in advance or ask at the official ticket office, not a driver. Decline shop detours firmly and stick to your planned itinerary.

Översikt

Luxor is a mid-sized city in Upper Egypt built directly on top of ancient Thebes, the capital of the New Kingdom pharaohs and arguably the single richest concentration of ancient monuments on Earth. The Nile splits the city cleanly in two: the East Bank holds modern Luxor town along with the colossal Karnak and Luxor…

Sevärdhet

Karnak Temple Complex

The largest religious complex ever built, a sprawling site of pylons, obelisks and the famous Hypostyle Hall of 134 giant columns. Allow at least half a day; go early or return for the evening Sound and Light Show to beat the heat and crowds.

Sevärdhet

Luxor Temple

A graceful riverside temple built mainly by Amenhotep III and Ramesses II, once connected to Karnak by the ancient Avenue of Sphinxes. It is lit dramatically after dark, making an evening visit especially rewarding.

Sevärdhet

Valley of the Kings

The rock-cut burial ground of New Kingdom pharaohs on the West Bank, including Tutankhamun's tomb. The standard ticket covers three open tombs from a rotating list; Tutankhamun's tomb and a few other headline tombs require a separate add-on ticket at the gate.

Valley of the Queens

A quieter West Bank valley holding the tombs of royal wives and children, most famously Nefertari, whose brilliantly painted tomb requires a separate premium ticket. General entry covers several other open tombs.

Taste it here

The must-try local dishes, sweets and fruits — including the exotic ones you won't find back home.

KoshariDishDina Said / Wikimedia Commons (CC BY-SA 4.0)

Koshari

Egypt's national dish of rice, lentils and macaroni topped with spiced tomato sauce, garlic vinegar and crispy onions, sold everywhere from simple stalls near the souk to sit-down koshari restaurants. Cheap, filling and entirely vegetarian.

Ta'ameya (Egyptian Falafel)DishHassan Hassoon / Wikimedia Commons (CC0)

Ta'ameya (Egyptian Falafel)

Egypt's fava-bean falafel, with a distinctive green interior and herby flavor, served fresh from street stalls in warm pita with tahini and pickles - a good, cheap breakfast before an early start to the temples.

Dish

Molokhia

A thick, garlicky green stew of finely chopped jute mallow leaves served over rice with chicken or rabbit, found on home-style menus across Upper Egypt including Luxor. The texture is distinctive; most visitors either love it or need a second try.

Karkade (Hibiscus Tea)DrinkMRG90 / Wikimedia Commons (CC BY-SA 4.0)

Karkade (Hibiscus Tea)

A tart, deep-red hibiscus infusion, served hot or iced, that is especially popular in Upper Egypt where hibiscus is grown; Luxor's cafes and juice stands pour it everywhere.

Hamam Mahshi (Stuffed Pigeon)Dishmedea_material / Wikimedia Commons (CC BY 2.0)

Hamam Mahshi (Stuffed Pigeon)

Whole pigeon stuffed with spiced rice or freekeh and grilled or roasted until tender - a genuine Upper Egyptian specialty, since pigeon houses dot the countryside around Luxor and the Nile Valley.

Must-try

Dukkah

A dry blend of roasted nuts, seeds and spices, traditionally scooped up with bread dipped first in olive oil - a simple, moreish snack sold loose in Luxor's souk and a popular edible souvenir to take home.

Complete your trip

The essentials most travellers book anyway — real providers for this destination.

Hur man kommer dit och rör sig

Verkliga taxor, inte turistpriser.

Hur man kommer dit
Taxi from Luxor Airport 15 min2–4 US$

Overnight sleeper train from Cairo 10 tim60–80 US$

Hur man rör sig
Caleche (horse carriage)3–5 US$

A charming but old-fashioned way to get around the East Bank or reach the West Bank ferry. Agree the total price for the whole ride before boarding.

Local taxi2–5 US$

Useful for reaching the spread-out West Bank sites, where taxis often wait to take you between the valleys and temples. Agree a price for the full route, including waiting time, before setting off.

Public Nile ferryGratis – 1 US$

The cheapest and most local way to cross between the East and West Banks, departing regularly near Luxor Museum. Bikes and motorbikes can usually cross too.

Walking the East Bank corniche

The riverside promenade connecting Luxor Temple, the souk and most hotels is flat, scenic and easy on foot, especially in the cooler morning and evening hours.

Bästa tiden att besöka

januari–mars och november–december

The cooler months from November to March bring warm, pleasant days and cool nights, ideal for full days at the open-air temples and tombs; December and January are the most comfortable, and also the busiest and priciest. From April onward the heat climbs fast, and summer, from June to August, is genuinely extreme, regularly passing 40C with little relief even after dark - plan for early starts, indoor breaks at midday and plenty of water if you visit then.

Säkerhet

FörsiktighetLuxor is one of the hottest cities in Egypt, with summer temperatures regularly above 40C and open, shade-free archaeological sites. Visit tombs and temples early in the morning, carry more water than you think you need, and rest indoors through the early afternoon.
FörsiktighetMany of Luxor's biggest sights - Karnak, the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut's temple - offer very little shade. Wear a hat and sunscreen, and consider a light long-sleeved layer for the strongest midday hours.
FörsiktighetRoads on both banks carry fast-moving cars, tuk-tuks, caleches and bicycles with few working crossings. Cross carefully and predictably, and take extra care near the ferry landings and West Bank site entrances where traffic and tour buses converge.

Dolda pärlor

Cross on the small public ferry near Luxor Museum instead of a private motorboat - it costs a fraction as much and is a proper slice of local life.
Watch the sunset from the corniche opposite Luxor Temple, with feluccas drifting past and the West Bank hills turning gold across the river.
Visit the Mummification Museum on the corniche, a small and usually quiet museum that explains the embalming process in more depth than any tomb label.

Vanliga frågor

How many days do I need in Luxor?

Three to four days lets you cover both banks properly - Karnak and Luxor Temple on the East Bank, and the Valley of the Kings, Valley of the Queens and the mortuary temples on the West Bank - without rushing. Add a day if you want the hot air balloon and a relaxed felucca sail too.

Do I need separate tickets for Tutankhamun's tomb or Nefertari's tomb?

Yes. The standard Valley of the Kings ticket covers three tombs from a rotating list, and Tutankhamun's tomb is a separate add-on ticket bought at the gate. Nefertari's tomb, in the nearby Valley of the Queens, requires its own premium ticket priced well above general entry.

Is the hot air balloon worth it?

Many visitors call it a highlight of their trip: drifting silently over the West Bank temples and desert as the sun rises is a view you cannot get any other way. Book with an established operator, confirm safety credentials, and expect an early pre-dawn pickup.

How do I get between the East and West Banks?

The cheapest option is the small public ferry near Luxor Museum; taxis and organized tours cross via the bridge south of town and are more convenient if you are visiting several spread-out West Bank sites in one day.

Is Luxor safe for tourists?

Luxor is generally safe and heavily geared toward tourism, with a visible police presence around the main sites. The main hassles are persistent touts, unofficial guides and shop detours rather than any serious danger; agree prices in advance and politely decline unsolicited help.
