A walled UNESCO-listed old town of cobbled lanes, the Street of the Knights, gates, courtyards and squares, free to wander at any hour. Explore early or late to beat the cruise-day crowds, and be wary of restaurants with pushy touts on the busiest streets.
The great fortress-palace at the top of the Old Town, rebuilt by the Knights of St John and later restored, with grand halls and Roman-era mosaic floors. Buy a ticket at the door and allow around an hour; combined tickets with other Old Town sites can save money.
Housed in the beautiful medieval Hospital of the Knights, this museum holds Rhodian antiquities including the delicate Aphrodite of Rhodes. A cool, atmospheric stop right in the Old Town, easy to pair with the palace and the Street of the Knights.
A whitewashed clifftop village about an hour south, crowned by an ancient acropolis with the Temple of Athena Lindia and sweeping sea views. Climb early or late to avoid the heat and crowds; decline the donkey 'taxi' up the hill if animal-welfare concerns you, as the walk is short.

A traditional Rhodian grape spirit distilled from pomace, close cousin to Cretan raki and Italian grappa, and long a fixture of island celebrations and meze tables. It is typically served in small glasses, sometimes over ice, to accompany a spread of small plates.

Rhodes Diagoras Airport (RHO) has frequent flights from Athens in under an hour, plus direct seasonal routes from many European cities. Usually the fastest and often the cheapest way to reach the island; book early for the best summer fares.
Ferries link Rhodes with Piraeus (Athens) and other Aegean islands, but the Athens crossing is long, often overnight and best with a cabin. Scenic and good for island-hopping, though slower and subject to weather cancellations.
The public RODA bus runs between Diagoras Airport and Rhodes Town for a couple of euros, the cheapest transfer. Comfortable enough but it stops en route and runs to a timetable, so allow extra time on arrival.
Two bus companies cover the island: RODA for the town and west coast, KTEL for the east coast and Lindos. Cheap and reliable for main destinations, though services thin out in the evening and off-season.
Metered taxis are easy to find in Rhodes Town and at ranks by the sites. Insist on the meter for city trips and agree fixed fares for longer island runs. Uber Taxi also operates and can be clearer on price.
A small car or ATV gives the freedom to reach Lindos, Kamiros and quieter beaches on your own schedule. Roads are generally good; drive carefully on narrow coastal bends and check insurance and helmets before setting off.
Late spring (May to June) and early autumn (September to October) are the sweet spot, with warm sea, hot but not extreme days and thinner crowds. July and August are hot, busy and pricey, softened by sea breezes, while winter is mild but quiet, with many resort businesses and some sites on reduced hours or closed.
Two to three days cover the Old Town, the palace and museum and a couple of beaches. Add a day or two for Lindos, Kamiros, the Valley of the Butterflies and a rental-car loop of the island's quieter south.
The cheapest option is the public RODA bus for a couple of euros, which takes around 35 minutes with stops. A fixed-fare airport taxi is quicker at roughly 30 euros, and Uber Taxi also operates on the island.
Yes, Rhodes is generally very safe with little serious crime against visitors. The main annoyances are inflated bills at tourist-trap restaurants, taxi drivers avoiding the meter and ATM currency-conversion fees, all easily managed with a little care.
Not for the Old Town and nearby beaches, which the buses and taxis cover well. But a rental car or ATV makes it far easier to reach Lindos, Kamiros, the west coast and hidden beaches on your own schedule.
May to June and September to October offer warm sea, pleasant heat and fewer crowds. July and August are hottest and busiest, while winter is mild and quiet but with many resort businesses and reduced site hours.
