Muhtasari

Dammam is the capital of the Eastern Province and Saudi Arabia's fifth-largest city, a modern Gulf coast metropolis built largely on the oil industry that transformed the region after the Dammam No. 7 well struck crude in 1938. Together with neighbouring Khobar and Dhahran, it forms a sprawling metropolitan area along…

The must-try local dishes, sweets and fruits — including the exotic ones you won't find back home.

Dish

Machboos (Majboos)

The Eastern Province's signature rice dish, fragrant spiced rice cooked with fish or shrimp instead of the meat used inland, seasoned with dried lime, cardamom and turmeric. It reflects the Gulf coast's seafood-forward take on Saudi Arabia's national rice-and-spice tradition.

Order the shrimp (robian) or fish (samak) version at a Gulf-style seafood restaurant rather than a general Saudi grill for the most authentic result.

Hamour (Grouper)DishLiji Jinaraj / Wikimedia Commons (CC BY-SA 2.0)

Hamour (Grouper)

The Gulf's most prized reef fish, firm, mild and traditionally caught in Arabian Gulf fish traps, served grilled or fried at seafood restaurants across Dammam and Khobar. It is popular enough that mislabeled substitutes are a known local issue, so ask before ordering.

Choose a restaurant with a visible menu and clear pricing, and ask if the hamour on offer is genuinely local before paying a premium price.

Dish

Saloona

A tomato-based Gulf stew of mixed vegetables and meat or fish, warmed with a bezar-style spice blend and usually served over rice, a homely counterpart to the more festive machboos.

Look for it as a daily special at family-run local restaurants rather than tourist-facing menus, where it is less commonly listed.

Khlas DatesFruitMaderibeyza / Wikimedia Commons (CC BY-SA 3.0)

Khlas Dates

Golden-brown, semi-dry dates with a honey-like finish, grown in nearby Al-Ahsa, the world's largest date-palm oasis with some three million trees, making the Eastern Province one of Saudi Arabia's premier date-growing regions.

Buy them by weight from a dedicated date shop rather than a supermarket for fresher stock, especially if you can find Al-Ahsa-grown Khlas specifically.

Arabic Coffee (Qahwa) with DatesDrinkSlywire / Wikimedia Commons (CC BY-SA 4.0)

Arabic Coffee (Qahwa) with Dates

Light, cardamom-and-saffron-infused coffee poured from a dallah into small cups and always paired with dates, a UNESCO-recognised hospitality ritual observed across the Gulf, including in Eastern Province homes and cafes.

Accept a refill or two if offered, and give your empty cup a small side-to-side shake when you are finished, a subtle, well-understood signal.

Kufika na kuzunguka

Nauli halisi, si bei za watalii.

Jinsi ya kufika
Ride-hailing from the airport dakika 35SAR 60–90 · US$ 16–24

The easiest way into Dammam or Khobar from King Fahd International Airport, with the fare shown in the app before you book. Expect a genuinely long ride, since the airport sits well outside the city.

Metered airport taxi dakika 35SAR 68–120 · US$ 18–32

Licensed taxis are available outside arrivals as a fallback if ride-hailing is unavailable. Confirm the meter or agree a fare before departing.

SAPTCO airport bus dakika 55SAR 11–30 · US$ 3–8

A budget bus service connects the airport with central Dammam and Khobar on a regular schedule, the cheapest option if you are travelling light and not in a rush.

Kuzunguka
Ride-hailing appsSAR 26–49 · US$ 7–13

Uber and Careem cover Dammam, Khobar and Dhahran well and are the default way most visitors get around, though they do not serve the Bahrain Causeway crossing or some Aramco-restricted areas.

Rental carSAR 94–188 · US$ 25–50

A practical option if you plan to explore Half Moon Bay, Ithra in Dhahran and other sights spread across the wider metro area at your own pace. Major agencies have desks at the airport.

SAPTCO city busSAR 4–11 · US$ 1–3

A public bus network links central Dammam with Khobar and Dhahran at low fares, a budget option though slower and less flexible than ride-hailing for door-to-door trips.

Wakati mzuri wa kutembelea

Januari–Machi na Novemba–Desemba

November through March is the most comfortable window, with daytime highs around 21-24C and cooler nights, ideal for the Corniche, the beach and outdoor sightseeing. From May to September, daytime temperatures regularly exceed 40C and combine with noticeably higher humidity than inland cities like Riyadh, making midday outdoor activity uncomfortable and best avoided.

Usalama

OnyoGulf coast humidity makes Dammam's summer heat feel more intense than in drier inland cities, raising the risk of heat exhaustion from May to September. Stay hydrated, limit outdoor activity around midday, and rely on air-conditioned transport and venues during the hottest stretch of the day.
TahadhariHalf Moon Bay is generally considered safe for swimming and diving with a gentle, shallow entry, but currents and occasional jellyfish can occur seasonally and lifeguard coverage is not guaranteed everywhere. Swim at a well-used public area and use ordinary open-water caution.
TahadhariGeneral Saudi conservative-dress norms apply in Dammam, though beach clubs and resorts tend to be more relaxed than downtown. Confirm the specific dress expectations of a beach or pool venue in advance if you are unsure.

Vito vilivyofichwa

Walk the Corniche around sunset, when the heat breaks and the waterfront fills with families out for the evening.
Pair a visit to Ithra in Dhahran with the nearby Saudi Aramco Energy Exhibit to see both the region's cultural ambitions and the oil discovery that funded them.
Ask at a seafood restaurant what is freshest that day rather than ordering hamour by default, the Gulf catch varies and a good server will steer you toward better value.

Maswali yanayoulizwa mara kwa mara

How many days do I need in Dammam?

Two days covers the Corniche, King Fahd Park and Ithra in nearby Dhahran comfortably, with a third day if you want to add Half Moon Bay or Coral Island.

Is Dammam worth visiting compared to Riyadh or Jeddah?

Dammam has fewer historic monuments but offers a relaxed Gulf coast pace, genuinely good seafood, and easy access to Khobar and Dhahran, including the Ithra cultural centre, making it a worthwhile add-on to an Eastern Province trip rather than a first-time-Saudi-Arabia priority.

How far is the airport from the city?

King Fahd International Airport sits roughly 30 kilometres northwest of Dammam, notably far from downtown, so budget 30-40 minutes and a higher fare than you might expect for airport transfers.

Can I visit Khobar and Dhahran from Dammam easily?

Yes. Dammam, Khobar and Dhahran form one contiguous metro area, and ride-hailing apps make moving between them quick and affordable, so many visitors base themselves in one and day-trip to the others.

When should I avoid visiting?

The peak summer months from roughly May to September bring high heat combined with Gulf-coast humidity, making outdoor sightseeing uncomfortable. November to March is far more pleasant.
