The great Minoan palace about 5 km south of the centre, the largest Bronze Age site on Crete, with restored frescoes, storerooms and the throne room controversially rebuilt by Sir Arthur Evans. Go early or late to beat the heat and crowds, and consider a combined ticket with the Archaeological Museum.
One of Greece's most important museums, holding the world's richest collection of Minoan art, including the Phaistos Disc, the bull-leaping fresco and the snake goddess figurines. See it alongside Knossos, ideally the museum first for context. Allow at least two hours.
The stout 16th-century Venetian sea fort guarding the old harbour, and the symbol of the city. Walk out along the breakwater, climb up for views over the port and town, and step inside to see the vaulted halls and cannon. Best at sunset when locals stroll the pier.
The lively heart of the old town, where the 1628 Venetian fountain with its four marble lions still marks the main meeting point, ringed by cafes and bougatsa shops. Free to enjoy, and the natural place to start a wander through the centre.

Simple, fresh and found on almost every taverna menu on the island.
Eat it soon after it is dressed, while the rusk still has a little bite; let it sit too long and it turns soggy.

Ask for it sweet with custard (me krema) for the classic Heraklion version; a savoury cheese one makes a heartier start to the day.

Try a slice drizzled with local honey, a classic Cretan pairing, or order it fried as saganaki with a squeeze of lemon.

It is a symbol of hospitality, poured to welcome guests and to round off a meal, and never confused with sweet Turkish-style aniseed raki.
It is usually offered free at the end of a meal; sip it slowly with a little dessert or fruit rather than downing it, as it is strong.

One of the oldest recorded Greek sweets, they are the classic warm dessert to share after dinner or as a treat.
Eat them hot and fresh from the fryer, when the outside is crisp and the inside soft; they lose their magic once they cool.
Small Cretan pastries that come in savoury and sweet forms, filled with soft local cheese such as myzithra and herbs, and either baked or fried. The sweeter versions are drizzled with honey and cinnamon, and they are a beloved home-style snack found in bakeries across the island.
Look for them in bakeries and village shops; a savoury cheese one makes a good walking snack, while a honeyed one is a light dessert.

The public bus links Nikos Kazantzakis airport with the centre in about 20 to 25 minutes for a couple of euros. By far the cheapest option; buy your ticket before boarding, as the on-board fare is higher.
Licensed taxis wait outside arrivals for the short run into town, with a set day and slightly higher night tariff. Convenient with luggage; ask for the meter or agree the fare, and expect a small airport surcharge.
Crete is large and best explored by car, and the airport has many rental desks. Useful if you plan beaches, wineries and mountain villages beyond the city, though central Heraklion itself is congested and parking is tight.
Blue city buses cover Heraklion and nearby beaches, while the intercity KTEL network reaches Knossos and towns across Crete. Cheap and reliable; buy tickets from kiosks or the station rather than on board.
Metered taxis are easy to find in the centre and at ranks, and short hops across town are inexpensive. Ask for the meter, keep small change, and use ranks or a phone booking at busy times.
The old town, from Lion Square down 25th August street to the Venetian harbour, is compact and flat enough to explore on foot. Comfortable shoes and water help in the summer heat.
Late spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October) are the best times, with warm days, sea still swimmable in early autumn, thinner crowds and lower prices than peak summer. July and August are hot, busy and expensive as the whole island fills up, while winter is mild but wetter and quieter, with many coastal businesses closed.
One to two days covers the city itself: Knossos, the Archaeological Museum, Lion Square, the Venetian harbour and a good taverna meal. Add more if you want to use Heraklion as a base for beaches, wineries and day trips across central Crete.
It is strongly recommended. Most of the finds from Knossos are displayed in the Heraklion Archaeological Museum, so the site makes far more sense with the museum's context. A combined ticket often covers both, and many people do the museum first.

It is worth at least a night. Many travellers rush through to the beaches, but the museum, Knossos, the harbour, the food and the everyday buzz of a real Cretan city reward a proper stop rather than a quick change of transport.
Not for the city, which is walkable and served by buses, and central parking is difficult. A rental car is very useful, though, if you plan to explore Crete's beaches, mountain villages and wineries beyond the city, and the airport has plenty of desks.
