Bali

An Indonesian island of temples, rice terraces and beaches

ภาพรวม

Bali is Indonesia's most famous island, a tropical destination known for its Hindu temples, emerald rice terraces, surf beaches and warm, welcoming culture. It is not a single city but a whole island, from the cliff temples and beach clubs of the south around Uluwatu and Seminyak, to the arts town of Ubud among the rice fields, and the volcanoes and waterfalls of the interior. Getting around means renting a scooter, booking a private driver for the day, or using ride-hailing apps, as there is little public transport. Bali rewards a slower pace: temple visits at dawn, long lunches at local warungs, and afternoons split between beaches and rice-terrace walks. It is generally very affordable, though prices in the tourist hotspots are far higher than at local spots a short distance away. Ride carefully, respect the temples and the sea, and give yourself at least a week to see more than one corner.

Scooter rental for a day
ต่อวัน
IDR 72,727-163,636 · US$4-9

Cheap and the easiest way to explore, but only ride if you are licensed and experienced. Photograph the scooter for damage first, wear the helmet, and never hand over your passport as deposit.

Short Grab or Gojek ride
ต่อเที่ยว
IDR 18,182-90,909 · US$1-5

The ride-hailing apps show a fixed fare upfront and are far cheaper than negotiating with a street taxi. Some tourist areas restrict pickups, so walk to a nearby main road if needed.

Private driver for a full day
ต่อวัน
IDR 727,273-1,181,818 · US$40-65

Hiring a driver for the day is great value for visiting several sights and splitting between a few people. Agree the route, hours and price in advance, and confirm fuel and entry fees are separate.

Mid-range restaurant meal
ต่อคน
IDR 90,909-272,727 · US$5-15

Tourist-area restaurants add a tax and service charge, often around fifteen to twenty percent, shown on the menu. Prices are still low, but check for the added percentages before ordering.

Meal at a local warung
ต่อคน
IDR 27,273-72,727 · US$2-4

Small family-run warungs serve authentic Balinese and Indonesian dishes for a fraction of tourist-restaurant prices. Busy ones with local customers are your best and safest bet.

Large bottle of local beer
ต่อขวด
IDR 36,364-90,909 · US$2-5

Local beer is cheap in shops and warungs but marked up heavily in beach clubs and fancy bars. Buy from a shop or a simple bar if you are watching costs.

Temple entry ticket
ต่อคน
IDR 36,364-109,091 · US$2-6

Most temples charge a small entry fee that usually includes sarong hire. Carry small cash, as cards are rarely accepted, and be wary of anyone demanding extra 'donations' beyond the posted price.

Money-changer shortchange
สูง

วิธีการทำงาน: Some street money changers advertising unbeatable rates use rigged calculators, sleight of hand or distractions to hand back less cash than you are owed while counting.

วิธีหลีกเลี่ยง: Use only authorised money changers or withdraw from a bank ATM. Count the cash yourself before handing over your notes, do not let the clerk recount it out of sight, and walk away from rates that look too good.

No-meter taxi overcharge
ปานกลาง

วิธีการทำงาน: Street taxis and touts, especially near the airport and tourist spots, refuse the meter and quote a heavily inflated flat fare, sometimes claiming the ride-hailing apps are 'not allowed'.

วิธีหลีกเลี่ยง: Use the Grab or Gojek apps for a fixed, fair price, or an official metered airport taxi. Agree any fare in advance if you must take a street taxi, and know roughly what the trip should cost.

ATM skimming
ปานกลาง

วิธีการทำงาน: Card-skimming devices are sometimes fitted to ATMs in tourist areas, copying your card details, and standalone machines in dark corners are higher risk.

วิธีหลีกเลี่ยง: Use ATMs attached to or inside a bank branch, cover the keypad as you enter your PIN, check the card slot for anything loose, and monitor your account for unexpected charges.

Uninsured activity operators
ปานกลาง

วิธีการทำงาน: Cut-price operators for water sports, treks, rafting or scooter rental may use poor equipment, provide no safety briefing and carry no insurance, then dodge responsibility if something goes wrong.

วิธีหลีกเลี่ยง: Book adventure activities through reputable, well-reviewed operators, ask about safety gear and insurance, and never let a rental hold your passport. Pay a little more for a properly run trip.

การเดินทางไป
Official airport taxi 45 นาทีIDR 145,455-454,545 · US$8-25

Use the official taxi counter or rank at the airport for a set or metered fare, not drivers touting inside the terminal. Have the fare agreed and small notes ready before you set off.

Grab or Gojek from the airport 45 นาทีIDR 109,091-327,273 · US$6-18

The ride-hailing apps are usually cheaper than airport taxis, with the price shown upfront. Pickup can be restricted at the terminal, so follow the app's designated meeting point.

Hotel transfer 45 นาทีIDR 181,818-545,455 · US$10-30

Many hotels offer an airport pickup for a fixed price. Convenient and hassle-free on arrival, though often a little more than a ride-hailing app. Confirm the cost when you book.

การเดินทางรอบๆ
ScooterIDR 72,727-163,636 · US$4-9

The most popular way to get around for confident riders, cheap and flexible. Only ride with a licence and a helmet, watch for uneven roads and heavy traffic, and never leave your passport as deposit.

Grab and GojekIDR 18,182-145,455 · US$1-8

Ride-hailing cars and motorbikes give fixed, fair prices without haggling and are ideal for short trips. Coverage is good in the south and Ubud, thinner in remote areas.

Private driverIDR 727,273-1,181,818 · US$40-65

A driver hired by the day is the comfortable way to reach several sights, especially spread-out temples and the interior. Agree the itinerary and price beforehand and tip if the service is good.

ช่วงเวลาที่ดีที่สุดในการมาเยือน

เมษายน–กันยายน

The dry season from April to September brings the best weather, with sunnier days and lower humidity, ideal for beaches, temples and treks. It is also the busiest, with July and August peaking. The wet season from October to March is greener and quieter but brings heavy afternoon downpours.

ความปลอดภัย

คำเตือนScooter accidents are the most common serious risk for visitors. Only ride if licensed and experienced, always wear a helmet, avoid riding after drinking, and watch for uneven roads, dogs and unpredictable traffic. Check your travel insurance covers riding.
คำเตือนMany beaches have strong currents and rip tides that catch swimmers out. Swim only where flags and lifeguards indicate it is safe, heed warning signs, and take extra care on exposed surf beaches.
ระวังAt the Monkey Forest and temples like Uluwatu, monkeys snatch sunglasses, phones, hats and food. Keep bags closed, remove loose items, do not tease or feed them, and do not try to grab a stolen item back.

จุดลับน่าไป

Eat at a busy local warung for authentic Balinese food at a fraction of tourist-restaurant prices.
Hire a private driver for a day to link several inland sights like rice terraces, a water temple and a waterfall.
Watch the sunset from a cliff temple in the south, then stay for the atmospheric evening fire dance.

คำถามที่พบบ่อย

How many days should I spend in Bali?

At least a week lets you combine the southern beaches, Ubud and the interior without rushing. A few days only really covers one area, and travel between regions can be slow.

What is the best way to get around Bali?

For confident riders a scooter is cheapest and most flexible. Otherwise use the Grab and Gojek apps for short trips and hire a private driver for the day to reach spread-out sights.

Do I need to cover up to visit temples?

Yes. A sarong and sash are required at temples and are usually available to borrow or hire at the entrance. Dress modestly and follow any signs about restricted areas.

Is it safe to drink the tap water?

No. Stick to bottled or filtered water, which is cheap and widely available, and avoid ice from unknown sources if you are unsure. Use bottled water for drinking and take care with raw salads in cheaper spots.

How do I change money safely?

Use authorised money changers or bank ATMs, count the cash yourself before handing over your notes, and avoid street stalls advertising rates that seem too good, which often shortchange tourists.
