Marseille's beloved hilltop basilica, La Bonne Mere, crowned by a golden statue of the Virgin and offering the finest panorama over the sea, port and rooftops. Entry is free with a welcome donation. Reach it by the little tourist train, bus 60 or a steep climb, and watch for bracelet sellers on the crowded terrace.

Several Mediterranean rock fish are simmered with saffron, fennel and tomato, then served in two courses: first the rich broth with toasted bread and garlicky rouille, then the fish and potatoes.
The real thing is expensive and often ordered a day ahead; look for restaurants that follow the Bouillabaisse Charter and avoid suspiciously cheap versions near the port.

Brands like Ricard and Pernod are tied to the city, and a leisurely pastis on a shaded terrace is a daily southern ritual.
Add water to taste, roughly five parts water to one of pastis, and pair it with olives and panisses; it is meant to be sipped slowly, not knocked back.

They are meant to be firm and keep for weeks; dip them in coffee or tea to soften, and buy a box as an easy, authentic edible souvenir.

A cheap, satisfying street snack most associated with the old fishing district of l'Estaque.
Eat them hot from a paper cone with a little salt; l'Estaque's waterfront stalls, which also fry sweet chichis fregis, are the classic place to try them.

The dedicated shuttle links Marseille Provence airport with Saint-Charles station in about 30 minutes and is the cheapest airport connection. Comfortable and frequent, though it can be busy and is a known spot for pickpockets, so watch your bags.
A free airport shuttle drops you at Vitrolles-Aeroport Marseille Provence station, from where regional trains run to Saint-Charles. Good value and useful if you are continuing by rail, though it involves a connection between the shuttle and the train.
Licensed taxis charge a set fare between the airport and the centre, more at night and on Sundays. Best with luggage or late arrivals; use only the official rank and confirm the fixed airport tariff before setting off.
Two clean, quick metro lines link Saint-Charles station, the Old Port and the main districts, the fastest way across the centre. Buy a rechargeable card and mind pickpockets at the busiest stations.
Three tram lines and a wide bus network reach the areas the metro misses, including the hill up to Notre-Dame de la Garde on bus 60. The same ticket and passes apply; validate on boarding and stay alert on crowded routes.
The Old Port, Le Panier and the museum quarter are compact and best on foot, though Marseille is hilly and the climb to the basilica is steep. Comfortable shoes help, and the little tourist train saves the uphill legs.
Late spring (May and June) and early autumn (September and October) bring warm, sunny days, a swimmable sea and easier access to the Calanques, with lighter crowds than midsummer. July and August are hot and very busy, and high fire risk can close parts of the Calanques, while winter is mild but windy, with the cold mistral sweeping through on clear days.
Two to three days lets you cover the Old Port, Le Panier, the MuCEM and Notre-Dame de la Garde at a relaxed pace, with time for a boat trip to the Calanques, the Frioul islands or Chateau d'If.
The L091 shuttle bus to Saint-Charles station is the cheapest option at around 30 minutes. A train via Vitrolles-Aeroport is a good alternative, and fixed-fare official taxis suit late arrivals or groups with luggage.
The central tourist areas are generally safe with normal city awareness, but pickpocketing is common around the Old Port, Noailles and on crowded transport. The troubled northern estates hold nothing for visitors and are best avoided.

A genuine bouillabaisse from a charter restaurant is a memorable, if pricey, two-course feast usually ordered a day ahead. Cheap versions near the port rarely resemble the real thing, so choose a respected address if you want to try it.
