Riyadh is the capital of Saudi Arabia and a rapidly modernising desert city, where glass towers rise beside restored mud-brick heritage and wide highways cut through the plateau. Once a walled oasis town, it is now the country's political and business heart, and recent years have opened it to leisure visitors with new museums, restaurants, parks and entertainment districts. The restored heritage site of At-Turaif in Diriyah, the birthplace of the first Saudi state, sits alongside modern landmarks like the Kingdom Centre and its sky bridge. Beyond the city, the dramatic cliffs of the Edge of the World make a popular desert day trip. Riyadh rewards visitors who plan around the heat, respect local customs and use ride-hailing apps or the new metro to get around. It is a practical, spread-out city best explored over a few days, ideally in the cooler months.

King Khalid Airport is well outside the centre. Ride-hailing apps show the fare up front, which protects you from overcharging. Confirm the app price rather than accepting a flat cash quote from a waiting driver.
Apps like the main local ride-hailing services are the easiest way around the city and usually cheaper and clearer than a street taxi. The in-app price is fixed before you ride.
Book a licensed operator with a proper 4x4, as the desert track is rough and easy to get lost on. Confirm whether transport, water and a guide are all included in the quoted price.
Riyadh has a huge range of restaurants at every price. Local and South Asian eateries offer excellent value, while mall and tower venues cost more for the setting.
Kabsa, the spiced rice and meat dish, is a filling and good-value local meal. Traditional floor-seating restaurants often serve the most authentic and generous portions.
Arabic coffee served with dates is a local ritual and a fair-priced treat in most cafes. Specialty coffee shops charge more for the surroundings than the cup.
The new metro is cheap, clean and air-conditioned, and covers several key lines across the city. Buy a rechargeable card or use contactless where available and check which line serves your stop.

The cooler months from November to March are by far the best time to visit, with pleasant days and cold desert nights ideal for sightseeing and desert trips. Summer, from roughly May to September, brings extreme heat that makes daytime outdoor activity difficult.

Ride-hailing apps are the easiest and most transparent option, and the new Riyadh Metro is a cheap, air-conditioned choice on the routes it covers. Walking is limited by distances and heat.
The peak summer months from around May to September are extremely hot and best avoided for sightseeing. The cooler season from November to March is far more comfortable.
Dress modestly in public, covering shoulders and knees. Standards have relaxed for visitors in recent years, but conservative, respectful clothing is expected and appreciated, especially at heritage and religious sites.
