The Ottoman-era heart of Sarajevo, a warren of stone lanes lined with coppersmiths, craft stalls, cafes and the wooden Sebilj fountain. Free to wander; come with an appetite and time for a coffee, and explore the coppersmith alley of Kazandžiluk.
The largest historic Ottoman mosque in the country, completed in 1532 and the centrepiece of the old town. A small fee may apply for tourist entry; dress modestly, remove your shoes, and avoid visiting during the five daily prayer times.
A graceful Ottoman stone bridge over the Miljacka, famous as the spot where Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated in 1914, the event that sparked the First World War. Free to cross; the small museum on the corner tells the story.

Bravadžiluk street near the bazaar is the classic ćevapi row; a squeeze of onion and a side of sour cream is the local way.

The cheese, spinach and potato versions have their own names, and the whole family is known as pita. Sarajevo claims one of the oldest burek traditions of all.
Buy it by weight from a buregdžinica bakery and eat it warm, often with a cup of drinking yoghurt.

The Centrotrans shuttle runs between the airport and the city centre for a few marka in around half an hour. The cheapest comfortable way in; pay the driver in small cash.
The cheapest route uses a trolleybus from near the airport in Dobrinja, then a transfer to a city tram. Slower and involving a change, but costs little more than a single ticket.
The airport is close to the centre, so a metered taxi is quick and reasonable if you avoid touts. Use the official rank and insist on the meter or a fair agreed price.
One of Europe's oldest tram lines runs the length of the valley, linking Baščaršija with the western districts and the main station. Buy and validate a ticket, as inspectors check.
Trolleybuses and buses reach the hillside neighbourhoods and suburbs the tram does not. The same cheap ticketing applies; buy before boarding at a kiosk where you can.
Licensed metered taxis are cheap and handy for the Tunnel of Hope or late nights. Use a marked company car and confirm the meter is on.
The historic core is compact and flat along the river, and best explored on foot. Wear comfortable shoes for the cobbles and the climb up to the fortress viewpoints.
Late spring (May and June) and early autumn (September and October) bring warm, mostly dry days ideal for walking the old town, with September a particular sweet spot after the summer crowds. Summer is lively and hosts the Sarajevo Film Festival in August, while winter is cold and snowy with skiing on the nearby Olympic mountains, though a valley inversion can trap air pollution on still days.
Two to three days is enough to see the old town, the main museums and war-history sites, and still ride the cable car up Trebević or take a half-day trip out to Vrelo Bosne or nearby Mostar.
Yes, it is generally very safe and welcoming, with low violent crime. The main things to watch are pickpocketing in crowds, taxi overcharging, and left-over landmines in remote rural areas well outside the city.
The currency is the convertible mark (BAM), fixed to the euro at about 1.96 marka to one euro. Some tourist spots accept euros but often at a poor rate, so it is better to pay in marka and use cards for larger bills.
