Fair prices in Qatar — what things really cost

What a taxi, a meal, or an activity should actually cost in Qatar, by destination. Verified reference prices so you know the moment a quote is unfair.

Single Doha Metro ride
The metro uses a flat fare, so any single Standard-class journey costs the same low price however far you travel. Buy a rechargeable Travel Card, or upgrade to Goldclub for a quieter carriage at a higher fare.
$0.5–$1
Airport taxi to the city
Official turquoise Karwa taxis are metered and honest. The Red Line metro from Hamad International is far cheaper if you travel light, while a taxi or ride-hail suits late arrivals and heavy luggage.
$14–$20
Short metered taxi ride
Insist the driver starts the meter; if they refuse or quote a flat price, you can decline and take another. Karwa taxis are safe and cheap for short hops when the metro does not reach your spot.
$3–$8
Mid-range restaurant meal
You can eat very well for little at the many South Asian, Arab and Filipino diners locals use, while hotel and Pearl restaurants cost far more. A weekday set lunch is usually the best value.
$8–$25
Karak tea and a snack
Karak, a sweet spiced milk tea, is a Doha institution sold cheaply at roadside cafeterias, often with a shawarma or a savoury pastry. It is one of the cheapest and most authentic things to try.
$1–$4
Uber or Careem ride
App ride-hailing shows the price up front, which avoids any haggling over fares. It is a good choice at night or when you want an air-conditioned door-to-door ride in the heat.
$4–$10
Meal at Souq Waqif
The souq's terraces are a lovely place to eat traditional Qatari and Levantine food in the evening. Prices are higher than at a neighbourhood diner but reasonable for the setting; check the menu before sitting down.
$14–$35
